Wynton Marsalis, of whom I am not a big fan, was outstanding (especially the trad stuff he did) at the Caramoor Jazz Fest this year. Other good music seen (somewhat) recently includes T. K. Blue, Fertile Ground(a local Baltimore group), Steve Turre, Mulgrew Miller, the Rebirth Brass Band, and Eddie Palmieri.

Saw Cut Copy a few weeks ago at the 9:30 club and again back last May at the Black Cat. Both shows were tremendous, especially the first one at the smaller Black Cat.
My Morning Jacket at Constit hall was a helluva show. Probably my favorite band right now. Only thing I would change is the venue.
George Clinton @ 9:30 club on my friend's 21st bday was probably the highlight of the summer for me. BY FAR the best concert I've ever been to (and the stories will last a lifetime).
Death Cab for Cutie was pretty meh...you can't say it was bad because they are so good at what they do, but it's not exactly the most exciting affair.
The entire Virgin Mobile Music fest at Pimlico was a blast. LOOOOONG weekend, but a blast. Moby's DJ set was phe-nom-men-naaal. Weezy sucked. Bloc Party and the Black Keys kicked butt. Jack Johnson is lame.
Saw Sara Barralis (?), the "not gonna write you a love song" lady for free at National Train Day at Union Station AND met Al Roker...that was pretty dope.
I'm reeeeeeally looking forward to the Oasis show in December. I've always been a Brit Pop fanboy and I never thought I'd see them. The new album is great.

Though I know I'm showing my age here, you should have seen Clinton in the 70's, or even the 80's. Diapers and dope, plus the band was outstanding. Absolutely UNBELIEVABLE!

Thanks for the plug, Coast to Coast. We just shot a super cool music video (in full HD glory) and we're having our video release party next month, Nov 14 at the Rookery in the West End. Also for NYC Hoya's we'll be playing Desmond's tavern in midtown on Oct 25th. Is the video online yet? We just got the files today, but we are not going to post them until the day of the release party. It makes the release oh so much better....hehe..

MGMT - Saw them last week with Beck. Amazing. Absolutely awesome. I have been wondering: when I say this band's name out loud, should I say "management" or "M.G.M.T.?" The DJs on the college radio station out here (yes, I'm a loser who listens to college radio...pile on) keep saying "management," which seems to assume too much.

The band used to be named Management. They have changed their name to MGMT and it is now pronounced M-G-M-T.

FYI: Killers pre-sale on today for The Patriot Center on Jan. 28. I have literally never seen a bad concert there, so hopefully Mr. Flowers & Co. will not disappoint. Pre-sale is today through tomorrow at 10 p.m. Anyone interested, click this link & enter password: human

Wild Light - Awesome band out of the hinterland of New Hampshire, they rocked it out just the other night at the Mercury Lounge. Lots of energy and catchy sound. Have a little Arcade Fire in them, but a little more raw and rough. Good times.

It was an ok place to see a show. Better than Verizon, but still with that kind of stadium feel. the stands are really steep so everyone has a view, just dont get a ticket at the side of the stage because you wont really be able to see anything but a profile. (of course floor tickets are the best)

Oh, I much prefer a smaller venue than the Patriot Center.
I was just referring mainly to the performances of the bands I've seen when I've seen them there. Haven't seen a bad one yet.
-- The Cure played for 4 hours, and lots of stuff for Cure faithful. -- Depeche Mode played for three hours+, and Dave Gahan was at his frenetic best. -- Foo Fighters, well they're always good when they play around here. -- Weezer, played almost nothing from that crappy Make Believe album...& several songs from Pinkerton. -- etc., etc., etc.,
Of course, you could say I'm never disappointed because I only go to see bands I love. True enough. But I've seen Depeche Mode at a few other places and they weren't as good, like at Nissan, where they sucked.
You do have to be careful where you sit though.

So I did get to the previously mentioned Drive-By Truckers/Hold Steady double bill at the Orpheum, and even though it was a Sunday night and I had to get up for a 7 am flight on Monday (thus limiting some of my usual music-enhancing behavior), it may have been the best live show I have seen in the past 5 years (unfortunately small list though that is).
DBT is pretty straight-forward Southern Rock, and I don't know all the words to all their songs (like I do for THS), but they still impressed me and convinced me I had made the right decision even after a tiring weekend. I also love to see a band that can pass around a bottle of Jack onstage but stay tight and coherent for a 70 minute set. I would definitely see them again, even without THS.
The Hold Steady, on the other hand, was even better than I expected (which is saying a lot for the first time seeing your favorite band), with Craig Finn bringing the dorkiest energy possible but still getting everyone singing along and dancing and having an awesome time. They played almost everything I wanted to hear, and you don't even realize how many sing/clap along songs they have done until you get to a live show. I only wish I could have been closer to the stage, though I suspect the sound actually improved by being a few rows back.
For the encore, DBT helped out in a big way with several songs, my favorite probably being a cover of The Band's Lookout Cleveland with Patterson Hood from DBT harmonizing and a sweet horn section that had played on several songs for both bands throughout the course of the evening. Patterson and Shona (DBT's newish female bass player) also contributed vocals on Chillout Tent and it almost worked, though the sound mix did not totally work for Shona's part.
In any case, this tour continues throughout the month, with stops still to come in Pittburgh, Bloomington, Chicago, Minneapolis (which would be pretty sweet as Finn's hometown), Boise (randomly, but I guess the bus needs to stop somewhere), Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and LA- check it out if you like rock and roll.

I've got tickets for the Sunday before Thanksgiving. I've been excited for a month.
I don't know DBT much at all -- I have one album. I gotta check out the set lists online for THS.

You are in for a treat, though I think I would rather go to one of the shows with THS closing. Try to stay for the whole DBT set, just to get to the encore, that is where some cool stuff has been happening so far on the tour. Lots of setlists can be found here: holdsteady.wikia.com/wiki/Tour_Dates_in_2008

Man, I would have liked to go Monday, then. Still, I'm catching a flight to see the family the next day so it's probably for the best.
They play the same amount, right?
