HiFi - That was a thoroughly profound counter-argument: "You are a bigot. Let me tell you about the inner city - here is an example of how I am a bigot." It sure doesn't take much for you too start hitting on the inner-city stuff, does it? You can't hide your racism when you get emotional, I guess. I guess you can't see the forest for the trees. I was illustrating how narrow minded his views are by showing how the same bogus argument could be lofted at other people. Some have called it "illustrating absurdity by being absurd." In any case, the difference I see, is that he really seems to think that only his view is reasonable and only the critics he chooses are worthy of criticism. I was just showing him how a very similar type of argument could be made of drastically different groups of people. It just depends on your agenda. In a related way his views illustrate the very point I made on the first thread. "Redneck" had a serious negative connotation in the past. To a degree, I think that has lessened. In fairness, there are certain qualities which are more typical of those that would be considered "redneck." As I listed earlier, some would be considered good, some bad and probably the majority neutral. Without rehashing that list, suffice it to say that GvlSCHoya apparently only sees the negative. Incidentally, I presume that is Greenville, S.C. If so, then your town sucks! I went to Furman for all of 1 year and hated it. I guess it's OK if you really like overcast weather with cloudy skies.

Well, hifi, since you asked about rednecks ruling the world, I thought I would limit my complaints to them. I do have a huge amount of disdain for the ignorant fools I described. These people praying to an old man in the sky for an oil pipeline or a war are screwing up our country. Yes, I'm condescending, but that's only because I'm better than everybody else. And I will estimate that if someone likes Sarah Palin, it's probably 60/40 that they are stupid. The non-stupid 40%, of course, can only be evil........ Also known as: "Why Democrats Can't Win Presidential Elections 101." You got it right.

redneck's is a derogatory term. They prefer sons of the soil. You're all bigots!

Furman - Baptist school, dry campus, of course you hated it. Greenville is also home to Bob Jones University. So you see, I've got plenty of examples around me of the kinds of people we're discussing.
Not so sure about the overcast weather, though. We're in the middle of a pretty terrible drought. Maybe too many of the Bob Jonesers prayed for sunshine along with their oil pipelines and wars, cause it sure ain't that liberal galowball warmerin causin it.
Did you see the article in Time about how Palin got elected mayor of Wasilla? She came up with an innovative platform. Fix the potholes? Nope. Repair the anti-polar bear fence? Nope. Make Old Man Sanders pick up the trash in his yard before the August freeze? Nope.
Abortion. Palin ran for mayor of Wasilla on an anti-abortion platform. And people elected her. Because a mayor has a lot of power to overturn Roe.

Because a mayor has a lot of power to overturn Roe. I actually went over to the Bob Jones campus a couple of times. It was basically all concrete. It was very clean and of course, everyone was all dressed up. I remember going to the library and glancing at the yearbooks, mostly lauging at the different styles through the years. I noticed that one yearbook was missing. I forget which year it was, but every single year except one was there on a bookshelf. After asking around, the rumor was that they removed it because they were offended by one of the students who was there that year. His name was Alice Cooper. I thought that was kind of amusing. As for Furman being a dry campus, trust me: our room, floor, dorm etc... wasn't. The same was true of one friend of mine who was a lineman on the Purple Paladin football team. I do remember this really killer pizza place that was a little bit out of town on a two lane road. I remember watching the Auburn-Florida game in '84 when we won 24-3. That was probably the most fun I had there. I also remember going to football games in appropriate attire -- shorts, flip flops and a tee-shirt. I was certainly in the minority as so many clowns put on their Sunday best. I also remember being Editeded off by the no beer on Sunday rule. But I digress... Seriously though, to suggest that Furman -- and Bob Jones for that matter -- are full of rednecks is just absurd.

Furman's definitely not full of rednecks. It's a good school.
BJU (heh heh) isn't necessarily full of rednecks.... but it is full of a bunch of people who revel in their own ignorance. The book-banning, creationism types. It is also full of a bunch of unhappy kids who are only there because their parents made them go there. Their parents were afraid they'd go to some liberal college where they'd get funny idears. Like Furman.

Their parents were afraid they'd go to some liberal college where they'd get funny idears. Like Furman. Actually, I don't know how true it is now, but one of the things I looked at when I went there was how good their College of Business is. There were acreditation issues, so they weren't listed on most of the Naional services. But at that point (back in '84-85), all of the big Accounting firms recruited from the Bob Jones campus and there were a bunch of quotes from big-wigs at the major accounting firms stating how much they were drawn to Bob Jones graduates. They did have some statistics of their own, showing job placement and it was very impressive. As a freshman I was planning on an accounting degree. I ended up with a finance degree from Florida. In any case, the statistics they had for job placement for graduates was very impressive. Of course, these were there own numbers since they weren't listed on most National rankings. So I was always somewhat skeptical. I just went to the websight out of curioisity, and "job placement" and "average salary" searches didn't really yield much information. I'm not interested enough to spend anymore time on it.
