I know teams do it. I saw the entire South Florida team when I was in Rome last year. Is it just some general exception to the prohibition agaisnt full team practices in the summer?

Why don't we do this? Have we ever?

I know we do it for soccer, and I saw a lot of the lacrosse team in Florence this summer( although I don't know if we do it for lacrosse or if they were just a hanging out there randomly) but I haven't heard of us doing it for basketball.

I believe we did a series of games/practices in asia ahead of the 88 olympics in Seoul, but maybe I'm confusing my timeline. It's definently talked about in the jt book Big Man on Campus, which is an excellent summer read for those looking to expand their knowledge of the history of the program.

yeah pretty much I believe it's once every 4 years a school is allowed to make one of these International trips.

It is limited to once every four years per NCAA bylaws 17.32 and 30.7. The "tour" can also take place during the summer vacation period, allowing the team to practice and travel before the official start of the season. One of the biggest advantages is the team gets up to 10 days of practice prior to departing for the trip.

JT II did take the team to Italy in the 70's. At the Hoop Club banquet that year, John Duren told a hilarious story about the experience. I'll try to retell it.

According to Duren, they played in a number of smaller towns, and on Sunday JT II insisted that they go to church as a group. Few of the players were Catholic, but there was only a Catholic Church in the town, so that's where they went. They also got there late, and wound up haivng to sit in the only available seats -- the second row. The Mass was in Italian, so they had great difficulty understanding what was happening. To make matters worse, they had no idea when to stand or sit or kneel. However, there was a well-dressed man in the front row and they passed the word to do as he did. This worked pretty well. He stood, they all stood. He sat, they all sat. Once though midway through the service, he stood up, they followed, and the entire congregation erupted into laughter. They sat down sheepishly. After the service, they went to their interpreter to find out what was so funny. Through his laughter, the interpreter said "The priest announced that there had been a birth in the parish that week, and would the father please stand up?"
