Seems like some pretty impressive things going on with solar power at MIT. I saw Nocera was being interviewed on TV tonight, but I missed it, so I'm not sure if he had anything to say that's not covered here.

I'm all for promoting these efforts and that air car, and stuff like that. I just think we should be drilling here as well because, contrary to Al Gore's wet dreams, this is not going to happen in the next ten years. It will take longer than that and I think more domestic supply of oil and natural gas, and nuclear power, are a good way to help us get there.

And no, I don't support these efforts because of global warming, but if it contributes to a cleaner environment, well, there's really no rational argument against that if its a viable energy source.

It doesn't matter.The Senate won't be considering it[/url]. Among the things this bill would have done:

Extends the tax credit for producing electricity from wind facilities through 2009 and the tax credit for closed and open-loop biomass, geothermal, small irrigation, hydropower, landfill gas, and trash combustion facilities through 2011.

Includes marine and hydrokinetic renewable energy as a renewable resource for purposes of such tax credit.

Extends the energy tax credit for solar energy and the residential energy efficient property tax credit through 2016.

Extends the energy tax credits for fuel cell and microturbine property through 2017.

Allows a new investment tax credit for combined heat and power system property.

Provides funding for new clean renewable energy bonds to finance electricity production from certain renewable resources and for qualified energy conservation bonds.

And McCain? 0 for 8.

The shot:

Senator McCain did not show up for the crucial vote on July 30, and the renewable energy bill was defeated for the eighth time. In fact, John McCain has a perfect record on this renewable energy legislation. He has missed all eight votes over the last year — which effectively counts as a no vote each time. Once, he was even in the Senate and wouldn’t leave his office to vote.

This is an old thread but the Democrats have apparently given up on extending the ban on offshore drilling. Maybe they were listening to the voters.

It won't matter. Any new leases would be held up by lawsuits such that there might as well be a ban. It's already happening in places like the Chukchi Sea in Alaska, which was allowed to be leased but is held up in court bc various environmental groups have sued to stop it / delay it and make it unprofitable.
