A disclaimer on the thread below. While it's a notable idea, neither HoyaTalk nor HoyaSaxa.com ever solicits funds from its readers. If you choose to participate with other posters, it is outside the administration of this site.--Admin |
Was thinking it would be pretty cool if HoyaTalk made a donation to the Hoop Club each year. There are almost 3,000 members of the board - maybe try to get everyone to donate $1 or maybe a quarter for every "x" amount of posts. Would be a great tradition if the board members as a unified group could make a donation to the team every year. I know most people on the board already donate, but in general for most teams message board members are the most volatile and unreasonable of fans and I think it would be a nice gesture to show our coach and team that even though they may read/hear about negative stuff on the board - the board supports the program. Not sure how to set something like this up, but I guess one of the more well-known and trusted members of the board would have to take the lead for people to feel comfortable sending money somewhere.

This is a great idea. If someone could be trusted to collect in a paypal account, then everyone could easily set up a paypal account and donate per post or simply $1 or more per year. I most certainly would donate, and everyone that reads and enjoys this board should. Also, whoever is responsible to collect and contribute this, should work for a company who can match this donation, because then the Hoopclub would get twice the money. I will bring this up at the next Hoopclub meeting to see if we can assist. This fund could also buy tickets with this donation and sell them to loyal Hoya fans for even more money for the Hoopclub. Just food for thought.

Neat idea -- one issue is that paypal charges a commission so we should look for another way to get the cash in.

Ted Leonsis (gtown grad- if you really have to ask) has his hand in a company called Revolution Money. it is a sort of new-fangled banking thing, but they also have an online money exchange part. I dont know what the requirements are to sign up (i think it may be more involved than paypal). But Leonsis is always very enthusiastic about gtown matters and very responsive to emails (you can find his email adress on his blog, Teds Take). Although his company may not be the answer, he may know some resources for this idea or want to help out. just a thought

Revolution money is free to sign up (and they pay you $25 into your new account to do it.)
IF we all sign up and donate that $25 ... that could be quite something. Additionally there's some manner of referral bonus of $10 per new user...

I second this idea, Big Mike, hopefully one of the higher-ups on this board could get something going, because it's really up to them.

Good idea - I'm in. Somebody gave me a cpa license along the way so I can volunteer to count money if we need... I passed the ethics test and everything! Although I'm still bringing down our ncaa salary bracket average. Go figure.

This is the kind of idea that makes too much sense to actually happen.

If most people's employers will match their donations, wouldn't it make more sense for everyone to donate individually?
Perhaps everyone could pledge a donation via Hoyatalk, then each poster could make that donation himself/herself.

Couldn't everyone just donate a tiny bit to HoyaTalk, and still donate individually? I think the point would be that the board would be giving something to the Hoyas for them having given us something to have a board about in the first place.

I remember a similar idea a few years ago when many of us raised concerns about facilities and coaching due to the lack of movement at the top and formal reduction of expectations for the program by then-Director Lang. At the time, this idea took the form of raising money for a new or renovated basketball facility. I recall faintly that this kind of idea, while helpful and great, could cause NCAA problems as a fundraising effort outside the official scope of the University and HHC/HU.
Fortunately, the HHC is now able to raise good money on its own and through the mandatory giving associated with season tickets. The HoyaTalk giving angle would theoretically help foster a more national base of donors.

Man, why does the NCAA have to ruin any sort of fun -- no drugs, no money, no fundraising, no Jeff at Kenner. I, for one, say we start fundraising for a new college basketball league. Seriously, though, could someone at least look into it? It would be good for this board to give a little bit back. Or at least someone could stomp this idea out by telling us that it definitely violates NCAA rules...

There's no NCAA rules against fundraising and giving it to the Hoop Club.
The legal issue that came up was having a third party hold funds and basically be responsible for funds that were committed to a University cause -- building a new arena/buying out a coach -- but weren't actually given. That's if I remember correctly.
People have really good points here -- it would be nice to have the board do something as a board, but it is easier and probably more effective to give personally. For those in DC who actually get benefits, unlike those of us the Hoop Club ignores and hates, giving through here is less benefit to them. And the matching gifts is a great point, along with the cost of collection.

This post warrants repeating in response to some of the previous posts. I agree with this sentiment.

Additionally there's some manner of referral bonus of $10 per new user... I'm willing to run this whole thing via Revolution Money and make the donation in Hoyatalk's name (ie, not my own), unless anyone has any issues with it. I'd like to think I'm trustworthy enough / well known enough to do this. Whether or not you want to donate your own money, I thinkpeople should sign up for an account and donate the $25 that they get free for signing up. Please let me know if you want to participate, and if you are, DON'T SIGN UP ON YOUR OWN. Send me your email address via PM and I'll send you a referral so that I get the $10 referral bonus. I'll keep everyone updated with a running tally through the end of April and then donate it on May 1st (I'm open to an end date). If you have any questions/want to know who I am, send me a PM As of 3pm, 4/4, Hoyatalk has $25 to donate to the Hoya Hoop Club
