Czech Republic has some fairly significant injuries. US gets Reyna back and probably has superior defense while Czech Republic has superior offense. US has also played together while Czech Republic is a mix of Russian Premier League, English Primier League, and Czech League players. The winner of this game is in control of the group the loser needs a win against Ghana and a tie or win against Italy to advance. I think the US can do it but a lot depends on the play of whomever is placed with McBride in the front 2 and the play of the midfield. I predict that Oguchi Onyewu will stare down a Czech player who will then pee his pants.

I predict that Oguchi Onyewu will stare down a Czech player who will then pee his pants. He's already done that to me via the Sports Illustrated cover last week (although at the same time I laughed at Landon Donovan trying to look tough).

Sorry czechs are just too good. I'm hoping for a tie due to my split alleigneces but i see the czechs winning. The only person they'll be missing will be Baros as of now. I think even with out him the czechs will have enough fire power to take the US. I think the US is in for a rude welcome to the world cup unless they're playing their very best.

Rosicky (I'm not sure how to spell his name in english) is also rumored to be out.

So far in this Cup many teams who have solid defenses or have had defensive game plans have been winning (Germany, England, T 'n' T). I'll go with the trend and say the US gets at least a draw in this one, though I'm predicting a W.
I will not only be rooting for the US, I will be rooting against the Czechs because I got lost on their country's train system once going from Bratislava back to Prague and that is clearly the soccer team's fault. That squandered all the goodwill I had built up for the Czechs based on good and cheap beer, all night discos containing attractive women, Vaclav Havel, Jaromir Jagr, U Fleku, Becherovka and some damn good pretzels.
Okay, fine. I love the Czech Republic. I just wish they would put some cushions on the trains that run in the southwest part of the country.

Bratislava?
"We just get Miami Wice on television. Miami Wice is number one new show."
"Stop Hammer Time. My friends where is the beef?"

"And there is a chance that the U.S. might be spared having to face some of the other Czech aces as well. Nagging injuries to the likes of Rosicky and Nedved have cast some doubt as to their participation, but Arena is having none of it. "
"Don't believe everything you read," Arena playfully admonished reporters on Thursday. "If you believe the press reports, three or four of their top players are out, but I would guess that on Monday we're going to see them all on the field."

That's nice Arena can tell us who is playing for the Czech team but not for the US MNT.
Baros is definitely a scratch - he's been fragile at Aston Villa and he was carried off the field in the Czech Republic's last final. I think you underrate us and over-rate the Czechs HSB - take off your red, white, and blue (arranged in the czech tri-color thing of course) glasses.
In a related note to any lawyers/consultants - how can I bill out a 3 hour "lunch break"?

Ok so last thought before sleep - here's what I think the US starting lineup should be - no Dempsey - he's too unskilled in defense. Keller Steve Cherundolo --- Eddie Pope --- Onyewu --- Eddie Lewis Reyna Beasley---------------- Mastroeni Convey Donovan-------------- McBride The way to win the game is to win the dead balls in the air by using our size and athletic ability with McBride and Onyewu and to limit the number of shots Keller sees.

Can someone keep a little running log of what happens in the first half on here? I'm not asking for play-by-play by any means, just the occasional update would be nice. I've got bar review from 9am until about 12:30 and may end up missing most of the first half.
And I'd much rather read someone's to-the-point recap than sift through all the muck on ESPN.com, sportsline, or any other service.

I can't because i'm at work and then trying to watch as much of the game as possible on my lunch break. I will say this though - I nailed the starting line up for the US. Can I claim my Devil went Down to Georgia DVD as a prize?

If you're playing the home version of the "ESPN covers US Soccer" drinking game, we just had our first mention of the fact that Kasey Keller lives in a castle by Rece Davis. Which at this point is said so often that according to the rulebook I'm looking at you can't open the can/bottle/keg/box/ox skin sack until an announcer brings it up. So let the games begin!
Sadly, unlike many soccer die-hards in this country, I'm leaving for work right as the game kicks off, so most of my Dave O'Brien-related drinking will unfortunately be done between 6-8pm tonight. Anybody know whether it counts double if you're playing the ESPN covers US Soccer drinking game and you rewind/rewatch a goal/stupid comment or something?
(BTW--song currently stuck in my head: the one from Team America: World Police that I'm not allowed to type on the message board. Appropriate in some sense, I guess.)
EDIT: Julie Foudy just analogized Landon Donovan to Steve Nash. DRINK!!

Priceless. Freedom? That costs a buck-o-five. Unfortunately, the US is off to a particularly "Thurman Thomas-eque" start to the match today, though.

America... F--- No! Czech Republic scores in the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead. That's where the score currently stands at the 23:40 mark in the first half.
Pretty frustrating having to follow this on the internet from work, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Reyna hit the post in the 28th or 29th minute. Other than that, our play has been choppy and listless at best.

Jebus. Be nice if we could ever get it out of our own third at some point in the second half.
Wow. Either the Brit mags I read were way off about the Czechs being overrated, or the US isn't near the team they were made out to be. Probably a little mix of both in there.

Reality Czech. Czech Mate.
Hopefully this is just one bad performance. While being unable to watch it has sounded pretty ugly for the US. Next up is Italy on Saturday, a team that seems just as tough at the Czechs. Obviously Team USA will need a much better performance to hang with the Italians.

I really think that this highly rated USA team needs to advance this year. Otherwise, they're going to lose a lot of casual fans as this failure will be seen as "business as usual."
Onto Italy...
