Per DFW's request because the thread on suggestion board is getting way off topic. So, I went to my first European Soccer game last night and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. I have never seen anything like that at a sporting event in the US. I was on the opposite side of the field of the biggest die-hards and it was incredible watching them singing and chanting, waving and holding thier team scarves over their heads. The Cameron Crazies are impressive in the US when they are all jumping up and down together but thats nothing compared to seeing the entire stands on the other side of the field moving up and down in unison with their arms around each others shoulders. There are so many great chants and songs and the people are into the game the entire time, it really creates an incredible atmosphere. So, the main team in Warsaw and possibly the best known team in Poland- Legia Warszawa was playing one of Germany's Bundesliga teams Bayer Leverkusen in an exhibition game. It figured to be a tough match up facing a good Bundesliga team that apparently beat Real Madrid in the past year. I was assuming that it would be tough to win but I was still hopeful that we'd be able to pull it off. The other day StPetersburg Hoya wrote: Well, the first half was hard fough but at some point about mid way through Bayer scored its first goal ( I dont have the stats in front of me). I was a little concerned but was just hoping we coul keep them from opening it up. Both teams had anumber of chances to score after that in the first half but no one was able to finish so it was1-0 Bayer at the break. The second half started off with a bang as Legia scored its first goal only 20 something seconds into the action. The stadium was rocking and I was getting even more excited. Then we scored again in the middle of the second half and took a 2-1 lead which was really awesome. Bayer had a number of great looks that were really scary for us but they couldnt get anything past the goalie. Legia also countered a number of times and was only inches away from taking a 3-1 lead. However, the game ended in a 2-1 win for Legia Warszawa and I was pumped that StPete had been wrong, haha. Steve, I know you're very Pro Russian because of learning the language and studying abroad there, but you've gotta stop underestimating Polish Soccer, haha. Basically though, the atmosphere was something truly amazing and something i wish we could incorporate into our games and athletic events in general in the US. Maybe I'll look into ordering about 8, 000 Blue and Gray Georgetown scarves, haha. It was really a great event to experience though and it was great to beat a Bundesliga side. I need to try and create some good soccer chants/songs from stuff I heard so that we have some good stuff for our soccer games and so on. And I just found a good fan website for the team: legialive.pl/

Soccer? SOCCER? Have the middleaged, mini-van driving mothers of America hijacked our beloved HoyaTalk board? Can't we talk about the World Series of Poop... er... Poker instead? How about "Dancing With The Stars?" Maybe Ben Affleck going to have a kid? Something... ANYTHING!!

007 - You are correct that the Russian national team has 15 goals for and 10 against - however they lost a qualifying game to Portugal 7:1. fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/t/sc/archive.html?id=36543&year=2004&month=10&day=13It was a national embarassment and people walked around not looking at each other or even talking about it the next day. The coach of the team left the pitch and quit in the course of the match.

That was a lovely link to the polish website - however I do not speak polish and my experience with slavic languages has not prepared me for that. Anyways, I am not so much pro-Russian team as I am pro-St. Petersburg, because they only have one team, while Moscow has 4 in the premier league and their state has 1 as well. They also have tons of money from their associations with oil and gas companies and gorge themselves on South American players. For example, Zenit-SPB's main rival Spartak (Moscow) was getting annoyed by the fact that Zenit had a 17 year old forward who scored a lot of goals against them - so they bought him for 3+ million Euros and he now sits on their bench. Not that I'm complaining about that. Because Zenit is in 2nd place in the premier league and has an easy schedule coming up: www.fc-zenit.ru/main/main.phtml

Luzhkov had set up a huge screen at Manezhnaya Sq (near the Kremlin) for people to watch the game (which started at, I think, 12 or 1pm). Of course, being Russian, fans started congregating and drinking for the 3-4 hrs beforehand and the 2 hrs of the game. As the final seconds ticked off, a mob of fans started on a rampage, breaking Japanese cars, trying to fight w/Asian-looking peoples, throwing bricks at the embassy, etc. Needless to say, for the next game, security was severely ramped up, and drinking at the square was severely cracked down. As for Russian club soccer, I have to say that the only match I ever saw was a Zenit - Torpedo. Great match, but Zenit didn't have enough gas at the end. Of course, running the gauntlet of Russian police going to/from the stadium was as memorable as anything else.

The only games I ever watched were World Cup type games. However, the atmosphere at these games is truly unparalled and I wouldnt bash it unless you've actually been to a game live.

If we have a European soccer thread, where is the WNBA thread? NASCAR thread? Tour de France thread?

If we have a European soccer thread, where is the WNBA thread? NASCAR thread? Tour de France thread? I guess we have to pretext things now with how they are supposed to be phrased since you cant tell by tone of voice on a message board. (calm voice, not angry) haha, do you have to find any other _ways to make enemies, haha. European Soccer is kind of one of the most popular forms of sport on Earth, just so you know, haha. And while I dont like Nascar and dont know if its really a sport, thats pretty popular in the US I believe. I can understand that you dont appreciate European Soccer cause you've never been to a game, maybe you've never even been to Europe, I dont know. But after experiencing a game live its extremely impressive and a real lot of fun. I have definitely never been to a sporting event in the US that had an atmosphere like that. Student Sections at some schools come close, but I've never seen that high a percentage of overall people in a stadium who are such great fans in the US. Almost everyone is into the game and getting loud, not sitting on their hands and falling asleep.

Yeah, I didnt really take offense to what you said and wasn't angry, but there is some truth about our feelings in what we say even if its joking, so I just wanted to let you know how awesome the experience is. It would be nice to have an atmosphere like that at MCI.

Better watch out now that you are a public figure...some things could be taken out of context and be headlines in the Hoya:
HOYA BLUE PRESIDENT BACKS HOOLIGANISM Advocates flares, public drunkeness, riots and vandalism
Washington, DC -- In a shocking admission, the newly elected president of Hoya Blue GUHoyas007 expressed his vision to transform the Hoyanation into an unruly army of hooliganism -- reminiscent of European soccer fans....

Its also been announed that we'll be playing Bayern Munich, champions of the Bundesliga and one of the worlds best known teams in Warsaw on August 8th. That will most likely be extremely difficult to win, but since we just beat Bayer Leverkusen anything could happen I guess.

Of course, running the gauntlet of Russian police going to/from the stadium was as memorable as anything else. The extra security is the best part of the game! When Dinamo and CSKA played Zenit they had one miltsioner per 3 Zenit fans and 1 militsioner per 1.5 visiting fans - since there were 30,000 Zenit fans and 2,500 Muscovites you can do the math. And St. Petersburg has the added layer of security of having the soccer stadium on one of the many, many islands so they can just raise the bridge if it gets out of control at Petrovsky. Although I think the ethnic motivated hatred against Asians may have played an ancilary role in what happened at Manezhnaya Ploshad its also not out of the ordinary - after a TIE between Lokomotiv and Zenit where there way a controversial call I saw 3 tramvay's (trolley buses) tipped over by the crowds. Supposedly the new coach of the national team - who I forget because all I can remember about the selection process is that they did not pick Zenit's coach because he is actually Czech and that was somehow a minus - will return them to their "rightful" place .

Is this a friendly match between the two clubs or is this part of the Champions League? Question on the game - I can't tell from the pictures - but is the stadium that they play in modern or built by Soviets? There is a huge Soviet stadium in Petersburg (120,000) that they can't play their games in because it has about 3 bathrooms (no joke), it has no real foundation, and has no underfield heating. I was just wondering if this stadium is a marvel of Commradely engineering with quotas.
