There's a great article in 'Lacrosse Magazine' about division I talent coming from the rest.
In 2000, there were only 150 players from the midwest, now there are 217 on scholorship, a 44.7% growth. Considering that it's really been in the only past 2-3 years that programs in those states have sprung up, in another 5 years I'd expect that amount to double (I'd say even more, but as more programs on the east coast are created, so too are western ones like Denver, Oregon, Air Force, Ohio St. Utah St., etc. that will undoubtedly tap local talent).

Great to see a good discussion here on lax; a couple of points: 1) As someone who grew up in the Baltimore suburbs, I certainly can't argue with the growth and geographic spread of the sport (both very positive developments in this viewer's mind). Just like soccer, lax will develop better players outside of the traditional geographic foci of the sport (MD, LI and upstate NY) as the sport catches on. Likewise, with regard to its growth outside of traditional class domains (no question that lax was a "preppy" sport for many years--that's changing too...) 2) From a GU perspective, I'd like to see the men's program continue to recruit heavily the traditional "hotbeds", especially MD (Urick has done that by getting FOUR kids from Landon in next year's freshman class and I hope to see more MIAA/IAC recruits just because that's where the best HS lax is played). GU has done a fantastic job at getting players from up and coming areas (OH/NJ/PA) and teaming that with a healthy influx of athletes from the hotbeds. This is not a meant as any type of criticism since Urick put together what is widely considered the best recruiting class in the country of freshman this year!! 3) A link just for nyc of the "official" coaches pool!! See who's 5th?! By one point! LOL!!! Point being, we all want to see GU in the top 4 seed position come tourney time.... laxpower.com/laxnews/news.php?story=763

WBH, I wouldn't mind seeing us pick off a few guys in upstate. Urick came to us from Hobart, so I assume that he has some cache up in those parts. That said, the focus should be on the homegrown guys of suburban MD and VA.

Urick has traditionally done well in NY (both LI and upstate), less so in MD (DC area--aside from Landon and Gtown Prep--is not as strong as Bmore) but I know he's doing much better in MD. He was in the running for Ben Ruebor last year who ended up at UVA and put together the amazing class of 2008 from all over....
I've said it before, he's the JT of lacrosse for GU--put the men's program on the map all by himself......

Just to add to the comments on the growth of the sport, I played in high school outside Chicago between 1993-1996. My school and a few others had had a program for years before then, but in the span of those 4 years the number of teams must have doubled in the Chicago area. There were probably 15 teams by the time I graduated in 1996 and I there are now more than 40 local high schools with programs, many of them still in their infancy. Even during my time playing, I witnessed the growth of diversity among players as well. Finally, my school also travelled to play teams in the Detroit and Cleveland areas, which seemed to be regions in which the sport was growing as rapidly as in Chicago. I imagine that continues to be the case, but will leave it to others who can comment on that from a closer perspective.

Following up on Jimmy's comments:
In 2001, one of Georgetown's captains was Roger Colbert, an African American. He went on to play proffesional lacrosse in the MLL.

I think there are four or five current players from there on the Hoyas. Of course, the best player in the history of lacrosse came from Manhasset - Jim Brown. Which leads us to advertising the next lacrosse game, which happens to be in MANHASSET at Manhasset High.

At the Duke game their was a horde of Manhasset families. Not sure if all were families of the players, some recruits, etc. but there was a significant portion of them attending the game.
