Seems like no 800m guys. Are we moving towards the longer distances or is this a 1yr aberration.

It seems as if they are recruiting more for the XC team, although the milers can sometimes make good 800m (e.g., Chris Lukezic, who this year has the third best time in the east region for the 800m so far - Jesse O'Connell has the 2nd best time). But they do not seem to be recruiting the 400m/800m guy that would do very good at the 800m in college (e.g., Bryan Woodward). As I mentioned in another thread, Courtney Jaworski is now at Penn; he was primarily an 800m guy. I don't know what happened to Stanley Legrande, who is a 400/800 guy. I think they are both sophomores. I think Matt Debole has some speed, but again he is a distance guy coming down. With Coach Valmon going to MD we have lost the edge with the faster guys.

Would be unfortunate if unreplaced coaching changes sap GU's traditional stength in the 800--would seem like that is a distance where we still stand out and produce world class type competitors--It seems like a ton of programs produce top XC talent, but only a few really produce the top guys on the track as well(BTW, I hope my admittedly second hand observations are incorrect)

I imagine Georgetown will always be known as Middle Distance U. They were before my time there, and they continue to be. They will supply a very competitive 4x800 relay at Penn on Saturday. They will probably contest the usual relays, such as the DMR, SMR, 4x1 mile, but maybe save a little in reserve for the 4x800. Go Hoyas!

One more woman recruit, another distance runner, surprise, surprise. She is Jennie Funk from Iowa City, Iowa.

Reformation, talk on the track boards after the Hoyas' victory in the 4x800:
Now all Gtwn
needs is to replace the bulk of their 800m runners...most of the guys they have coming in are running distances 1500m and up, but what a great squad to join!! Most of their other runners are sophomores...

For recruiting to replace some of th 800m men, the Hoyas have to look no further than their backyard:
Archbishop Carroll DC 7:44.42 wins 4x800 (Holmwood Tech JAM 7:44.73, St. Jago JAM 7:47.06) Carroll comes from behind with a 1:51.8 point anchor by Randy Lee to catch Holmwood Tech JAM on the final turn, 7:44.42-7:44.73. St. Jago JAM is 3rd in 7:47.06.
Randy Lee would be a good catch. Maybe JT could help with the recruiting.

i checked out some HS lists for the 800 men. Times were not great, even for the top guys(though the local guy sounds promising even if relay splits are a bit suspect) -maybe next year's crop will have better 800m talent. The women's 800 talent seemed better this yr(btw, did elizabeth Maloy redshirt the spring season, she seemed like gu"most promising frosh)

Track recruiting is a little different than basketball or football recruiting when you're looking to fill particular positions. At GU I would expect that the coaching staff is looking for potential and athletes that will fit into the system.
So I wouldn't read too much into whether or not we've recruited too many half milers.
Some of the guys on the current roster could "move up" to 800 meters, Chris Bonner was a state champ at 600 meters in high school, he could very definitely be an outstanding 800 runner.
The coaching staff does a nice job at moving people up and finding their best event, success in high school at a particular event doesn't always translate into success on the national level. Sasha Spencer wasn't an 800 runner when she arrived on the hill top.
I also want to say that Ashley Hubbard is a great recruit, I've had the pleasure of watching her run, she could be a very exciting athlete for the Hoyas in the years to come.

Good to hear about Ashley being such a good recruit. I agree with the idea that GU moves people up to their "true" distance. Sasha was mainly a 400m runner, but developed into one heck of an 800m runner. I know Carron Allen, who came from Las Vegas as a 100, 200, and LJ performer made All-American in the 400m or at least 4x400m at GU. She was always afraid to run the 400m in HS.
Elizabeth Maloy was in an early season meet running well on a relay, but I haven't heard about her since. She got injured in XC season with a stress fracture in her back or spine. Maybe she came back too soon. I hope she is recovering. She is definitely a great talent and showed that in her freshman year. It is too bad about her injuries.

Caron Allen was a great girl and Coach Helmer did a great job bringing her along to be an All American.
One runner who has not appeared in any results (red shirt?) is Sarah Isbitz from Cambridge R&L in MA. Sarah was a very good 800-mile runner in high school who has the potential to contribute in the years ahead for the Hoyas.

I forgot about Sarah. I have not heard anything about her either. Post, Bardo, if you hear anything. And yes Carron was a very nice young lady.

So after graduation that's 8 or 9 sprinters total, plus recruits?

I get the booklet once in a while with their bios, but most college athletic sites have this info online, but I don't think Georgetown does this - only a roster of names.

are we still recruiting pole vaulter's? Would seem like a discipline that would depend on having decent facilities, more so than our trad MD-LD

We have two good ones on the roster, but I haven't seen Danny Pellegrino's name in the summaries of any meets this year. Andrew Haskell's name showed up early, but nothing recently. I have not seen any recruits this year. If they are redshirting this year, we have a solid 1-2 for next year. The women have Leilani Green, who is a junior. So we are making an effort, but I agree it is hard to recruit with the facilities.

Are their many, or any football and track two sport athletes at GU? If so, how do they juggle the spring football commitment with the track season? Also, is track a scholarship sport at GU? I noticed that football's Luke McArdle ran the 100 and LJ this spring...did he do track all four years, or just this year because he's a senior and no longer involved in spring football? GU's getting a football player next year who's also his states 55M dash champ this past winter, and his PRs this spring are LJ 21'4", 100M 10.9, 200M 22.8, and Jav 164'.
