I'm assuming he will be using a sailboat or some sort of solar-powered skiff to get to Stockholm to accept, right? Then he can drive around the Nordic lands in a go-cart powered by his own sense of self-satisfaction.

I consider myself an environmentalist (I even drive a hybrid), but if any of you haven't seen the Hybrid Car episode of South Park, I highly recommend. It does a good job of ribbing the enviro community and is well worth the 30 minutes.

My lab at the EPA here was showing An Inconvenient Truth yesterday (I had never seen it), so it was a very timely affair. As most of the Nobel Peace Prizes, this was a bit politically inspired, to take a jab at the current administration's reluctance to tackle this problem head on. Which is okay with me.

Gore is a first class windbag, but if he somehow wrested the nomination from the overconfident HRC, it would mark the most unlikely political turnaround since Vice President Richard Nixon lost the disputed 1960 election and was elected eight years later.

I cannot wait until ed finds this thread. Gore wins the award previously given to Yassir Arafat.

Ok, I'll be the first to say it: congratulations to Mr. Gore for his work on what may well be the defining issue of this century, for having the foresight to raise it 20 years ago, and for having the perseverance to continue to work in the face of adversity.
Oh, and the South Park episode previously referenced is hil.ar.i.ous.

I'm happy for the guy - it's a huge vote of confidence for his work, which he clearly believes in. I'm not saying that everything he says should be taken at face value, but he's raised awareness and more importantly stimulated a lot of discussion on an important issue.
As for the Prize being politically motivated, it's true. The Nobel has a history of giving its prize to people who are at odds with governments it doesn't like. Both Hitler and Stalin forbade their citizens to accept Nobel Prizes after Prizes were given to opponents of their regimes. This is the second time the Nobel people have given their Peace Prize to a prominent critic of Bush (Jimmy Carter), placing him in some pretty undistinguished company.

With all due respect to DFW, why would Gore run for president now? He has segued into the role of "respected elder statesman" without the fuss and trouble of actually, you know, being president. What taste could he have for campaigning in Iowa or licking the boots of donors?
I only wish Jimmy Carter had followed a similar career path.

This is truly relevant to nothing. It's been known for years that Mr. Watson has some oddball views, but that in no way denigrates the work for which he deservedly won a Nobel prize. In 20 years or so, we'll have a much better feel for whether the award to Big Al was deserved or not. This award wouldn't be drawing nearly as much heat if Gore weren't a politician in his previous life [??]. And this may be a low blow, but I'll fire it anyway, what the hell. The only way our current President will win a Nobel is if they introduce a Nobel prize for morons.

I cannot wait until ed finds this thread. Gore wins the award previously given to Yassir Arafat. While Gore's smugness makes me chuckle...do you have to draw your material directly from Hannity? I mean, I don't even watch FoxNews that often, but even I saw his ranting and raving, and you lifted his material.

For your information, Cambridge, I did not draw my material from anyone. I happen to remember Yassir being awarded the Nobel. And, I have never watched Hannity on the tube.

Hmmm ... can't/doesn't watch Hannity on TV and doesn't lift his material from him - only one conclusion - ed = Hannity.
