As another off-season begins and the predictable facilities threads spring up like weeds, a few fellow HoyaTalkers and I have wondered aloud to each other: has HoyaTalk jumped the shark???
I fear it has.
More importantly, when did it happen? When legends from the old board ceased to exist for one reason or another? When it became the jump-off for the "support" rally and began taking itself far too seriously? When G'Town beat Duke and it was suddenly flooded with Johnny Come Lately bandwagoneers? baselinejournal's first appearance? When the bulk of posters suddenly became completely incapable of trading barbs and tongue-in-cheek pot shots and became more sensitive than a bunch of high school girls?
HoyaTalk was a much more fun place when the team was terrible. From talking with others, I know I'm not the only one ignoring a serious amount of threads/members these days, not to mention the fact with all the new members its become a free-for-all with all these posters who think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, their opinions somehow matter more than anyone else's and anyone who disagrees with them is due some sort of web-based tongue lashing. One need only look to the fact we've got (had) MULTIPLE threads where some of the more pretentious among us presume to know what's best for a G'Town student-athlete and his family.
I pray this isn't the beginning of the end. I'm afraid we're heading down the path of some of the Rivals boards where 10 billion people post constantly, and the level of discourse drops precipitously... Don Imus precipitously. If you're looking for an example, take a look at the Twerp or UK boards when you've got a moment.
Price of success, I s'pose...

More importantly, when did it happen? When legends from the old board were banned? I'd be curious to ask which "legends" you think are banned. Most are registered and do not post regularly, while one or two publicly walked away and never came back on any board.

It seemed to me this thread takes itself a little too seriously as well... who are you, the Hoyatalk Fairy?

We definitely jumped the shark when HiFi was added to the mix. He's the Scott Baio/Leo DiCaprio/Raven Simone of Hoyatalk.
On another note -- I could swear this post was here yesterday morning and then disappeared before I could actually hit "post reply" for the above comment. What happened?

The price of success indeed. When we were lousy, this was a much more fun place, inhabited only by the diehards and the occasional train-wreck-observers. Good stuff.
I'm in the camp that ignores a lot more stuff than I used to, by far. Lots of new people, lots of new thoughts, etc. Too much to handle...
That said, it's a lot more fun to have a great team and an overpopulated message board than to stink out loud like we did a few years ago.

Now, I'm relatively new to this whole thing, coming on board during finals of JT3's first year, but I think Hoyatalk was at its best when the team was good, but not great. Now, well, Buff covered many of the problems, but these two are the things I HATE the most: 1) "When the bulk of posters suddenly became completely incapable of trading barbs and tongue-in-cheek pot shots and became more sensitive than a bunch of high school girls?" 2)"not to mention the fact with all the new members its become a free-for-all with all these posters who think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, their opinions somehow matter more than anyone else's and anyone who disagrees with them is due some sort of web-based tongue lashing." And the facilities threads. Talk about a self important buzzkill. Then again, maybe Hoyatalk jumped the shark when Buff broke his promise to start an 80s thread every week last off season.

This thread reminds me of the classic P.J. O'Rourke essay on overpopulation scolds:
Just Enough of Me, Way Too Much of You

Oooh, can I be the ultra-cool and really old school poster that says it jumped a lot longer ago, just to remind everyone that my standards are higher than everyone else's?
Hoyatalk jumped the shark long before even the switch to this board. If you don't remember the "old board" you don't remember anything good.
Why does this feel like a discussion of the Pub?

Hello? It's the Hoyatalk board. If it's Hoyas related or GU basketball-related, you should expect to have it talked about here. You should expect and hope for the broader Hoya fandom to post here.
Dont we want more fans? More involved fans? Some of you blowhards act like your s**t doesn't stink, that you're the only ones who have the right to post here. Huh?
Maybe your personal venderttas don't get as much attention anymore. Boo hoo. We just made a Damn Final Four!!
Our future Hall of Fame Coach has not been extended. He said we have to do something about our 60 year old facilities. His dad repeatedly states he won't stay forever being underpaid and with crappy facilities.
And our two best players are thinking of leaving for the NBA.
Our program is in flux and there is lots to talk about. I may or may not agree with the rest of the posters, but I'd much prefer to talk about the issues facing the Hoyas than whatever is currently up the butt of Buff, Hifi, Brasky, Tbird or some of these other clowns.
Get over it.

I don't think the jump to the new boards was the jump the shark moment -- that was just when we got moved to Thursday Night "Must See TV."

This board is better than ever. No jumping the shark. I will take The Attorney General and the Clutter Police over some of the old time posters anytime.

This is silly.. As much as I'd love to go back to the days of 72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:M_iPucaL3fkJ:www.sportsonly.com/boards/gtown/+hoyatalk&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=usmaking esh jokes about power-plays and post-game tirades, isnt this post, in fact, an example of the very thing you're complaining about? can't we just be happy that there's so much interest in the team, regardless of the effects on the "discourse?" (aren't we getting a bit carried away with that reference??) not that it really needs to be mentioned, but the exact thing that may make this board subpar by your standards is the same thing that fills seats, gives the program a national reputation, and will hopefully lead to the end of the facilities arguments you hate so by allowing for the funding needed to correct that problem. and here's the real annoying thing - this whole bangwagoners argument - the WORST thing is when people want some sort of special prize for being a fan while the team sucked, but meanwhile it's COMPLETELY circumstantial that you happened to go to Georgetown during a down time for the team. If you'd been born 3 years later, are you any less worthy of following the team and posting on this board? Not only that, when you think about it, it's probably even less relavent to college basketball - couldn't you be called the bandwagoner..because it's not even the same team..the "new" fans are the ones going to class with Jeff Green and Jesse Sapp, sitting a table over from Roy Hibbert, or passing Jon Wallace on the village b quad. Does having the same experience with Jameel Watkins 8 years ago entitle anyone to label someone who starts liking the team now a "bandwagoner?" come on..
