McCain's UNC prediction notwithstanding, my guess is every serious presdiential contender has Florida & Ohio State in the finals.

As a conservative, I hate the fact that McCain consistently makes big issues out of little issues while neglecting to address the big issues. So given that history, it doesn't surprise me that he got this one wrong as well.

I'm with you there STPete. Rudy seems to be a good leader who adapts to the environment as needed, unlike a mere wishy washy politician who says what he thinks other people want to hear.
Case and point: his views on gun control change as the situation necessitates it. I am more of a gun rights advocate in general, but I also understand that New York City is a world all its own. I honestly think that his strict gun stance there was warranted even though in principle I am against the idea. And the proof was definitely in the proverbial pudding, as all major indicators under his direction went down.
McCain on the other hand is overly concerned about things like internet gambling and steroids in baseball.

If your definition of "important" issues is gay marriage and other ridiculous national obsessions, then, yes, McCain doesn't focus on them.
In my view, he has spent the last five years of his life performing a thankless but important task: discussing the need for a more comprehensive and thoughtful policy in Iraq.
But he is wrong about our Hoyas!!!

I was honoring the request to not make this a political discussion, but for clarification purposes, I never mentioned nor even thought about gay marriage and that too in my mind is a relatively unimportant fringe issue. The obvious topic I was thinking about was immigration, which should only be that much more important to a senator from a state with that much border with Mexico, but instead he was busy with baseball and steroids and then siding with assorted lobbyists to preven internet gambling. That is what I was talking about. |

But it wouldn't do anything to offshore betting or office pools, the latter of which is technically illegal. |

That is correct SF, and is yet another issue which should be left alone. All of these silly infringements of personal freedoms are the problem not the activity itself. Prohibition in the day, gambling, internet poker, wagering on college athletics .... this type of list goes on and points out exactly what my gripe is with some of the "right." I am really a libertarian for these reasons.

That is really one of the most irritating positions. He gives coachspeak as to the importance of the issue, and says that we need to sit down and hammer this thing out ... and then spends all of his time doing these other trivial things. Don't get me wrong, I am not "against" his immigration policy, at least not yet. He has to establish one first. He has said some interesting things at times, but then instead of making it a priority and actually creating a bill and then trying to elicit support in the Senate and truly getting something done, he gets preoccupied.) |
