IMO, driest opinions on the Rehnquist Court were from the Chief Justice himself. Stevens takes second place -- check out the Lake Tahoe takings case from 2002 if you want to be bored stupid. And the problem with the Lake Tahoe case is that it's kind of an important case on takings. The ironic (?) thing about you mentioning the Lake Tahoe case is that John Roberts argued for the Tahoe RPA in front of the Supreme Court (taking over the case from my Georgetown torts professor - Richard Lazarus). I can't believe Lazarus agreed to be interviewed by The Daily Show when Roberts was nominated. I know he's a close friend of the nominee and has been fielding a slew of interview requests, but The Daily Show? I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

The hatred comes from both sides. The Republican Party sunk to new lows in its systematic attack on John Kerry's service during the 2004 campaign. That is compounded by similar attacks from the Party on McCain, who was also accused of having a child out of wedlock, when, in fact, the child was adopted from Mother Teresa's orphenage, and on Max Cleland.
One might also say that all of this pales in comparison to charges leveled by Senator Joe McCarthy.

One might also say that all of this pales in comparison to charges leveled by Senator Joe McCarthy. Of course, there is an entire genre out there devoted to McCarthy's interest in anti-Communism. It began, of all places, at Georgetown University. www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=8471
