Granted, despite the fact that this was the worst officiated game we've had all season, Connecticut outplayed us today. We put up to many ugly three pointers and they worked the ball around the court well. However, I am disgusted with Jim Calhoun's behavior today. I have never been a fan of the man, but today solidified my beliefs. I counted a number of 7 times he pulled the refs over to his bench and argued with their calls, even when their calls gave the Hoyas a foul. It seemed that all of section 100, where I sit, was yelling "Shutup, Calhoun!" the entire game. However, the icing on the cake came after his team won the game and he was leaving. The student section was heckling the team, and instead of being the big person and walking out the door, Jim Calhoun stopped, turned around and promptly began yelling back at the students. I couldn't make out what the students were saying, but I distinctly heard "SCOREBOARD" come from Calhoun's lips. How old is this guy, 12?? Show some frigin maturity- can you imagine under any circumstances that JT3 would walk off the court after a win and start yelling at the students of another team's school? He has absolutely no class, and I put him right up there with Boeheim.

As someone who sits in the student section - no coach has ever yelled back at us - players maybe - on a good day an assistant coach. Calhoun is just a thug - he responds like a thug to his surroundings - that's what we saw today. I can't wait until we beat UCONN in BE this year or when we destroy them next year.

I can't wait to wreck UConn... almost as much as I can't wait to manhandle Syracuse @ Syracuse.... I'm tempted to make the road trip up there...
Simply put... I hate UConn... I hate Syracuse.... Period.

This is a good thing. Our fans have become so rabid, we've made an opposing coach scream back at us. Let that sink in for a moment. MCI may be moving closer and closer to a true home court arena. We're not all the way there yet, but it's a great first step in my opinion.

I was one that was yelling at Calhoun and the Huskies players as they were walking through the tunnel after the game. As I leaned over the rail, about 15 ft from Calhoun, I yelled something along the lines of, "You got lucky, Calhoun!" He stopped in his tracks and just stared at me for about 10 seconds. I repeated the line with more force, and then he kept walking. I basically do this kind of thing every game, and he was the first person that actually stopped and acknowledged me. Based on that alone, I'll agree that Calhoun is definitely a thug and a clown. If you choose to acknowledge a drunk 20-year old with a blue wig and cheesy aviators that's yelling at you, I question your professionalism. Too bad we don't play 'Cuse at home this year. I'd love to do the same thing to Boeheim and see what he does. Now, next time, all I need is a cup of ice and good aim...

He, CAHoya07 don't be like those Detroit Piston's fans now. If you did the same to Boheem, he would give his usual smirk and kept walking. Calhoun is like that big bully. All talk until you stand up to him. Our team gave him all they could handle, and we weren't even suppose to do that.

CAhoya07 -
You sound like a typical student having some fun. But come on. Jim Calhoun simply stops for a moment to aknowledge your screaming at him. Isn't this what you want? You dress up. Paint your face and when you get a wee bit of attention, you're flabergasted? So Jim Calhoun is a clown and a thug for looking at you and then walking away without saying anything?
Believe me, ever since the religious slurs that were hurled around by Pitt fans at El-Amin 5 years ago, he's very concerned with what goes on around his players. His interest in this is not one sided either. He has spoken with the students who attend the UConn home games about what he considers appropriate language and behavior. He knows how much the student sections mean to the team and wants them to represent the university in the right way.
Believe me. I understand your feelings towards Jim Calhoun and UConn. I grew up watching the "big bad" Hoyas dominate the BE in the 1980's. They were the team everybody else loved to hate because they were the best. Over the past 12 years, UConn has dominated the Big East unlike any other team ever has. Everybody hates the king. That's how sports work.

Alexd,
I was actually pretty excited that Calhoun actually stopped and stared me down. That acknowledgement alone defintely made my red-eye flight 4 days before class starts worth it. I've already bragged about it to a few of my friends. However, the fact that I was able to get him to stop after yelling something kinda stupid and non-offensive like that tells me a little about the guy. I would think a "classy" coach wouldn't even acknowledge something like that that I'm sure happens pretty often. I mean, do you think JT the elder would have stopped in his tracks to stare down an opposing student fan?
Anyway, I'm just glad that I have a good story to tell to my friends and family for years to come.
And for the record, I was not wearing any face paint.

Yep, it's quite a contrast between the face-painted heathens of the Hoyas and Pitt and the quiet, church mouse Huskies fans Alexd...I really am sorry that Khalid "take the money and run" El-Amin had to hear really tasteless trash talk about his religion when there was plenty of legitimate topics such as his drug-related incident and his questionable recruitment.

I am all for having fun, supporting the Hoyas, and razzing other teams and coaches. The greatest thing I ever saw was when some of the late '60's alums who sat across fromt the scorer's tables wore clown caps (bald heads with orange frizzy hair) to a 'Cuse game. Boeheim saw them a started laughing. That is the point. It is supposed to be fun.
I know 99% of our fans are full of class and would not say anything objective. But remember there are people sitting around you. One of the great individual battles I ever saw was AI against, believe it or not, Danny Hurley. We won, and as Seton Hall ran off the court I tried to get Hurley's attention. As hr turned to me, and I started to tell him what a hell of a game he played, some jerk behind me let him have it. Hurley flipped "us" off. Who could blame him?
The biggest joke behavior from a coach came from Steve Lappas. They came in '96, both teams ranked- big time atmosphere. Someone in the front row of the student section, a rather large fan, started yelling, "Lappas, you rat- you look like a rat!" And he certainly does. Now this is minutes before the game starts. Lappas gets all his assistants attention, points at this student, and blows his cheeks up and holds his arms out, signifying that the student was fat. Maybe he one-upped this 20 year old, but I knew we would win when I saw this. We held Eric Eberz scoreless for the only time in his career, and we won going away.
There are fans with no class, coaches with no class, and players with no class- I am glad the Hoyas will continue to win and lose ( but mostly win) with class!

I have to admit, I thought the Lappas thing was pretty funny. If somebody can dish it out, he better be ready to take it, too, including the fat kid.

I know 99% of our fans are full of class and would not say anything objective. That certainly applies to most of this board... unless, uh... you meant "objectionable"?

Talk about Language...
During the 1st half, after GU scored 2 quick buckets underneath, Calhoun pulled one of his boys off and proceeded to yell at him, "What the F*** are you doing out there...You let those F***ers get you twice". Then with a look of disgust and disdain walked away from the player he benched. I wonder if that is the old guys secret to coaching: Motivation through shame. I wish I could remember who the player was.
I was in the 121 AA row, and saw this from about 5' away. I was just disgusted.
If we could have mustered more boards, and a little more weight in general underneath, we could have taken them.
Our time is coming against the likes of that thug.
