4. I wish I could ballroom dance. Pretty sure chicks dig it. Maybe we should survey the chick who frequent the HoyaTalk board.
Suzhoya93, do you have any opinions on this subject?

YB -- Let me first congratulate you for being about as ultra sensitive as I would imagine a ballroom dancing coach would be.
Next, that performance was ridiculous. It is not just that the venue was wrong. The dancing was wrong. Those kids did not look skilled whatsoever. They are not well trained/coached.
That was bizarre and hopefully will never be replicated.
Why? For the love of GOd, why was that performance authorized?

Oh, man, I've reached the end of the thread. And HarbinHoya, learn how to use paragraphs. From the perspective of someone sitting at a desk at work, it looks like just a bunch of random words. There doesn't appear to be any structure or rhythm. Plus, I'm not sure your choice of font was right for the situation. I'm sure it's not the words' fault, only the way you have put them together.

Suzhoya93, do you have any opinions on this subject?Gotta say that I wouldn't mind a guy that could ballroom dance -- as long as he wasn't better than me. I don't need that kind of pressure. Mr. Suzhoya93 fits that bill, since he is a self-proclaimed "white man's overbite" type of dancer. I am just grateful that he's willing to get out on the dance floor with me. (It's either that, or watch me find someone else to dance with.)

Man...I bill an 11 hour day and miss all the fun!!
I deserve to get my two cents in on this one.
As most old-time posters know, I was in the pep band for four years and ran it for one. And there would occassionally be posts commenting/criticizing the band. Some were constructive, others were reactive. Usually, however, it would elevate to something resembling a conversation, and I would take away some new idea or stop something that really wasn't working. And I continued to send that sort of feedback to the group after I left.
Additionally, I want to say as a Georgetown alum and fan of performing arts at the school in general, I appreciate the efforts the university has made to showcase these groups during halftime this year. I think it's an excellent chance to give them some exposure to the student body as a whole.
HOWEVER, when you perform in front of 11,000 people, you have to expect that there will be people that don't like what you do. By putting yourself out there, you don't earn a "free pass" from criticism just because you "tried really hard." If you're given the stage like that, you have to make the most of it.
Now, from what I could see, the ballroom dance team clearly has ability and talent. And the idea of "Devil Went Down" was certainly creative. But given the ultra large stage, lack of introductions, strange costumes, and difficult discerning what was going on even at the 100 level of seats, it looked like a performance art piece as much as any sort of "ballroom dance" program.
Perhaps this is a relatively common approach to ballroom dance performance and competition ( meaning different music and costumes, and so on ). Sometimes, however, when you take something that is pretty much a shared experience for a narrow band of people, and then bring it out to a wider audience, those people outside the box don't get the things you take for granted.
and frankly, Bando and Suz both come from a music performance background AT LARGE ARENAS and are certainly sensitive to the experience of being in front of those people, so I think they are also both going to be a little more attentive to "what works" as well as "what doesn't" -- and rather than just offering knee-jerk reactions or taking the bait from the less constructive posters, you should perhaps listen a little more closely to what they--and the other constructive posters--have to say.
That said, YB, man, if it were me and my kids, I would have reacted exactly the same way at first...good for you for standing up for that courage and bravery!

I couldn't have said it any better. This thread is hilarious on so many levels. Let's all step back from the edge and realize that this thread revolves around the quality of the half-time entertainment which you could have missed if you waited in line for a hot dog and then used the facilities (not necessarily in that order) like I did.

OMGOMGOMGOMG Matt Leinart posts on HoyaTalk?!!??!!?!?
I'm all in favor of the Dance-Off, but there would have to be a panel of unbiased judges. If you let the (mostly male) crowd do the judging, then the prize would always go to the most attractive female contestant who was willing to dance in the most suggestive manner.
(Ohhhhhhhh, riiiiiiiight...)
Just don't the MCI camera crew tape it. They get some of the creepiest angles I've ever seen.

My last post on this topic.
First, there were times in the last 20 years when no one would have mistaken the band for "musical performance". So take the criticisms of Suz and "bando" with a grain of salt. After all, she did mention she had a hot dog thrown at her; maybe it was deserved.
Second, I still think the outlandish criticism- stuff that, when directed at student-athletes, gets yanked from the board- is uncalled for. Homophobic references like those made by the ludicrous Dhall and Michiganhoya, are also uncalled for. This team has won 2 world championships and hundreds of individual national medals. Nothing to be ashamed of.
Since much of this criticism is coming from people who don't ever cheer for the Hoyas at the games- are too self-righteous to ever get off their hands, too proud to do anything but level withering criticism at the players- I'm going to leave it be. I'm sure Roy, who took our classes this year, does not have such a misanthropic opinion of ballroom at GU.
But I'll say this: I have done a hell of a lot of work for the program in the last 3 years especially, trying new and different things for the benefit of all. Some of it works and some does not, but I never regretted trying something new and never will. I tried something new here too. Some people applauded, some did not. Fine. But JerseyHoya is absolutely right when he says this fan base is very adept at eating their own. I've sat and watched it happen for years. If people like Michigan, Suze, bando, or mapei got up and cheered for our guys as loud as they shreiked about how much they did not like ballroom's performance, maybe MCI would be a bit more "bananas" than it has been.
On to Syracuse.

I'm just saying, if there's a "Best Of" section every constructed on this website, please, please for the love of God, let this thread archive there. A la Bill Simmons, the unintentional comedy score of this thing was off the charts.

Homophobic? YB, are you insinuating that ballroom dancing is feminine? It is disgusting that a coach like yourself would pigeon-hole these kids like that.
I'm actually hoping that they bring in the DJ the Black Rabbi (a real dj) and do the horah at the cuse game, lifting up Jeff Green's mom on the chair of course.

YB--I hope that this doesn't stop the ballroom dance team from coming back to perform at future games. As I said earlier, I honestly believe that using the different in-game segments to highlight other student groups and activities is a great opportunity and an important step into making the MCI Center feel more like our home court.
Banners, player graphics, and scoreboard videos are all nice (and necessary), but what will distinguish us from other schools is the presence of our campus community and traditions. Like DFW said in another thread, Fr. McFadden is a fixture of Georgetown Basketball and changing that would be a mistake.
It's important for the University to communicate what it means to be Georgetown on the court and off, so I would hope that showcasing the dancing and musical talents of our student groups could become another tradition we celebrate.

On to Syracuse. Man, I wish I could stop myself from getting baiting into responding... but I can't. First of all, the hot dog thing -- that's how the hotdogs were handed out at the CapCentre to the band, smartass. And you are right -- the Band has had its ups and downs -- but that didn't give us a free pass from criticism either. Secondly, Your comments about my (and I assume about Michigan, Bando and Mapei, who I don't know) enthusiasm for the team during the game are completely lacking foundation. I've never met you, and if you'd ever sat next to me at a game (where I have season tickets), you'd know that I am routinely hoarse and my hands are sore from clapping and screaming throughout the game. As a student, I was actually reprimanded at the Big East tournament by the athletic department (from some alums) for my shrieking scream during opposing teams free throws because it was "inappropriate for a Georgetown student." I was at practically every home game from 1989-1993, travelled with the pep band from 1990-1993, and have had season tickets for almost every year I've lived back in DC. I am going to games when I'm 38 weeks pregnant -- if that doesn't say something about my love for this team, I don't know what does. (The MCI staff are a bit concerned about me.) To say that I don't support the team is crap... I just don't blindly support every effort made by anyone associated with GU. I've not made negative assumptions about your enthusiasm for your group OR for the team; it's pretty weak for you to resort to that about people you don't know. Finally, happy to have been able to keep others amused with this thread -- I had no idea this would become the firestorm it has when I started it.
