I don't think we fundamentally disagree. I'm not in favor or artificial wage hikes, although I do think the shrinking buying power of the lower middle class in American is an issue, long term.
Regardless, I think that dedication is a nice thing to see. And considering when I was there, the ethical corporation known as Marriott did its best to take advantage of the mentally disabled as incredibly underpaid labor, I'm less skeptical of the students' efforts than the University.

Real wages have decreased over the last 30 years...
Family savings levels & percentages have also decreased dramatically...
Wealth has become more inequal, as it has shifted from 10% holding 90% of the wealth in 1990 to 1% holding 99% of the wealth in 2000...
Unemployment may have remained relatively stable, but poverty levels and hours worked have increased fairly dramatically...
Not saying this is the solution, but to say that the market will solve everything is just as inane an answer as those that wish to completely regulate the market. Both fail to consider important variables and factors that are conveniently ignored by both economic models.

Please read this as satire
Why didn't the university just wait it out with these kids. I mean, one of the following will happen:
a. The kids get so hungry they sneak a snack. This shows there lack of commitment and breaks the cause. The university saves an incremental amount on food cost and makes money by admitting these kids to the hospital for malnutirtion. Also, the university can lower the count of enemies... a net win for the university.
b. The kids die. I don't think this would happen but at least the university gets rid of a few enemies, saves a few bucks, etc. Also, I don't think tuition gets reimbursed.
c. Cut the janitor's position entirely and offer it to the kids as a Federal Workstudy job.... see if they are for the cause or just some useless hippies...
