Nice write up by a DC area U of Delaware alum. He was wearing a Blue Hen hat, but a Georgetown shirt. He is just simply an excellent I-AA football fan.
My overall impression at the Saturday scrimmage was very positive. While the defense was the better unit, it was not nearly as one sided as it was in the spring. Also, the offense was without their top two running backs (top three, if you count Sarin). Both Davis and Crawford were not suited up--really don't know if they are hurt or if it was precautionary. A freshman, Mike Vendetti was pressed into service as the primary RB. He was a running back in high school but was immediately converted to a DB when camp began. He did extremely well under the circumstances.
My chief impressions were these:
1) Both prime QB candidates did very well--far better than in the spring. Cangelosi seemed much more comfortable and threw several excellent passes. A few were dropped, but they were quite catchable. Allan also threw well and broke off a couple of those runs that make him very dangerous outside the pocket. He can fly. I would give the edge to Nick, but not a huge one. One other note--whew, there were a bunch of QBs in green and I had the chance to watch a couple of freshmen warm up. Both looked like they could play, but I must say that Hostetler has a gun. Lot's of velocity, tight spiral and accurate. Of course, that was warming up, so I don't know what it really means.
2) The defense played well, but did not dominate as we might expect. Also, there appears to be some real competition for some key backup spots. For example, all the LB tandems played very well. No spectacular plays, but they always seemed to be around the ball and there were very few missed tackles. A couple of nice pass breakups were made by LBs. That group probably goes 6 deep with #6 (in my opiinion) being Bob Helt the freshman. With three of those 6 graduating this year, I think the Hoyas are in good shape for a few years at that position
3) There were a couple of nice receptions in addition to those drops I mentioned. Kyle Van Fleet (a converted LB) looked very strong but was guilty of a couple of those drops. Dominique Saunders took a well thrown ball over the middle (can't remember who threw it) and made an excellent move to get to the end zone.
I know I have rambled on, but overall I was very pleased with the way the offense looked (particularly considering the RB shortage) and I'm not worried about the 'D'. Can't wait for September 3rd.

Not worried about the D either, but Georgetown hasn't had a steady run at QB since J.J. Mont.
Last year, it seemed that Allan fit the Uzelac style better but he was so slow with the bad ankle that it was painful to watch. Cangelosi has the talent if he can get some in-game experience.
The RB situation should be a concern, given the lack of experience in the receiver corps.

Both Davis and Crawford were not suited up-- Of course, I meant Slayton--not Crawford. I guess I slipped because Drew dropped by and I had a chance to meet him for the first time. What a class young man--great ambassador for Georgetown.

Current player switching from DB to RB. Not sure of info is meant for public yet, so I won't say too much. I'm looking forward to a recap after Thursday's scrimmage.

Current player switching from DB to RB. Not sure of info is meant for public yet, so I won't say too much. I'm looking forward to a recap after Thursday's scrimmage. Dropped by for about an hour this morning. Got a good look at a very fast young man wearing #39 as an RB. If I'm not mistaken, that same kid was playing safety a week ago. He looked very comfortable for having made that switch so recently. He also showed some real acceleration. While the defense did some good things today, the offense was what I liked the most. Van Fleet pulled in a good pass in heavy traffic, Cangelosi looked very comfortable--in control of the offense, and I got to watch some football on a beautiful morning when I should have been at work. As that commercial goes, "It doesn't get any better than this" ;D

Cangelosi is now the new starting QB! Nick was only told yesterday according to www.guhoyas.com I hope it works out for him and the team. The guys definetly like him and we know how important it is to be a quarterback on the field and in the training room, as someone else on this board has said. Congratulations Nick

Just curious -- can anyone explain how we got Cangelosi? Why did he leave 1-A for GU?

According to him he wanted to be closer to home (Jersey) and Georgetown gave him better financial aid.

So he wasn't a scholarship guy at UNC, even though he was NJ's top-rated QB his senior year? Hmm. Anyway, I'm glad to have him.

I think 4ever may have misinterpreted some of the quotes that came from Nick when he transferred. He made mention of the fact that Georgtown worked out a good financial aid package, but I am almost certain that he was recruited as a full scholarship football player to Carolina. To echo a previous post, Nick is very popular with the team and worked very hard in the off season. Also, in my opinion Keith Allan also looked better in the past two scrimmages than I have seen him. It's nice to know that the Hoyas have a quality #2, if needed. Also, Keith brings a nice change of pace with his outstanding speed. If this offense can string together some first downs, the defense should regularly be able to hand them some excellent field position. That leads to scores and that wins games.

I'd love to have a winning season this year. I really think it should only be a matter of time before GU football breaks out as a Patriot League leader.

It's amazing how the HOYA continues to slight the football team with its poor research. How could the lead football reporter not know that Allan was named starter last year in the preseason? Seems like they dont do much legwork--- take a look at the stats and throw up a guess. Shoddy. They should do what they did last year with a player (former?) cover the team. When you leave it to the Hoya Sports staff outside of Basketball they just cant get easy things right.
And I think LBPop is right on the money.
I think also Benson made the right decision. He was 0-3 in the last three years, first picking Booth over Paulus (remember that?) and then picking Crawford over Zo Turner and then last year with Allan (more debatable I'll admit). But this seems like the right choice. Kudos.

Allan was NOT named the starter in the preseason last year - "The Hoyas' quarterback controversy came to an end at least temporarily Thursday afternoon when Head Coach Bob Benson announced senior Drew Crawford would start Georgetown 's season opener against St. Francis ( Pa. ) this Saturday ... Benson said he had expected to name sophomore Keith Allan the team's starter before the team's inter-squad scrimmage last Saturday, but an earlier hip injury, compounded with a sprained ankle sustained during practice last Friday, prevented Allan from fully participating in team training this week. Allan will suit up for this weekend's match but is not expected to play." Crawford started the season opener, Allan started the next four games, then Crawford took over at QB again, hence Allan was "The starter for four games early in 2004." Maybe the story was not clear on the circumstances surrounding the QB selection last year, but it was not shoddy research.
