It would be great to see that game vs. Iowa. I don't believe I've ever seen it. Anyone have a video or can post a really extensive, thorough recap? I think I was 8 or 9 and had yet to fully embrace Hoya Paranoia. I will echo what Dan said. That was an extremely disheartening loss, particularly for me, as that was the first time I thought there was a realistic possibility of both GU and UCLA reaching the final four. The final was 80-78, I believe, and Iowa shot over 70% and had only one turnover over the last 18 minutes. It was crazy. I didn't think it was possible for anything so ridiculous to ever happen to a strong defensive team again. And then came Villanova.

It's so strange that the Georgetown Hoyas, whose entire foundation is built on stifling defense, has been lit up for two of the great shooting displays in NCAA Tourney history-- this game by Iowa, and then by Villanova in the '85 championship. Shots were contested, players were up tight on their man, but every damned shot seemed to go in in both contests. Tough to swallow. Providence in '87 (still reason to get back at Pitino and, if given another chance, Donovan).

ok lichoya was in philly for that iowa game and one reason we lost was that craig shelton ie. big sky tryed to block maybe the go ahead basket and woulda but got his finger caught in the net and two points for iowa no goaltending but finger caught in the net true story go hoyas LET THE MEMORIES BEGIN NOW ;D ;D ;D Iowa 81, Georgetown 80 The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA, 1980 Eastern Regional Final
The 1980 NCAA's were a wild ride--a near upset at the hands of Jim Valvano's Iona Gaels, an emotional victory over #2 seeded Maryland that established Georgetown's place as the area's top program. But the regional final against Iowa stands alone. Leading by 10 at the half and 14 in the second half, the Hoyas shot 68.2% in the second half led by Eric Floyd's 31 point MVP performance. Amazingly, it was not enough. Iowa connects on 17 of its final 21 shots, makes 15 of 15 free throws, then Steve Waite connects on a three point play when Craig Shelton (with his hand in the net) fouls Waite on what became the last play of the game. Iowa advanced to the Final Four, 81-80. The above is from DFW's awesome historical info on the Hoya Saxa website. www.hoyabasketball.com/features/classic.htmFor those of us who watched the game it was tragic. It looked like JT was going to take us to our first Final Four since the '40s -- a thought that would have been completely incomprehensible when he arrived 7-8 years earlier. But Iowa nipped us at the end. Shelton and Duren - two of our top 10 all time Hoyas -- were seniors and were awesome. Sleepy Floyd was a sophomore. The following season '80-'81, was a bit of a downer after the loss of Big Sky and Ba Ba, but in the fall of '81 Patrick Ewing -- the #1 player in the country -- arrived, Sleepy was a senior, and Hoya History was about to explode! Two years ago, I reminded a couple of our Hawaii Shirt wearing wild men of this story, right after a truly devastating loss to -- of all teams -- the 'Cuse at the BET at MSG. I was attempting to give them a little perspective, remind them how far JT3 had brought the program already, and consider the remarkable things that may well be in store again. Little did I know the next year we would make it back to the Final Four for the first time since 1985 AND recruit the #1 player in the country again!!! Thank you God for sending us the Thompson family! And the Ewing Family! And the Green Family! And all our wonderful teammembers, coaches, students and fans!

I think there are more recent classic games that must be added to this list. DFW - any plans to add to the list? I can think of six or seven off the top of my head - in the JTIII era alone!

I lived in Westchester NY in 1980 New Jimmie V and Iona were strong. I was glad we got the win. My Iona friends would have been unbearable. Went to Philly with 3 alums from the class of 68 ( friends of lichoya??) We partyed hard. loved the Maryland game. A joy to beat them. Great game with Iowa despite the disappointing one point loss. Question is that the year Craig Shelton played with the broken wrist? Met him once at a hotel in Florida Not only a great bball played but a great guy. Stayed and talked Hoya basket ball for hours!!
As an aside I had just started a new job in March of 1980 . Over lunch one day I asked my new boss for time off to go to Philly for the games. He said no.. That afternoon he came to my office and said I had to go to Philly on Fri at company expense on company business that took all of 45 minutes. My weekend was free after that . My best boss ever !!!

The triple OT NIT game at UVA was a classic. Braswell must have played every minute of that one.

Welcome aboard. Say nothing nice about Nova (or any Philly team) and we'll be fine.

I have become somewhat of an USC fan thanks to the tickets for last years regional USC supplied me with. I now get all of their news letters and promotions for football tickets and all of their other sports.
The first game of the 1980 regional against Maryland was fantastic. Up to that point, Maryland was getting all the press in the DC area. In my mind that game was the biggest win up to that point in Georgetown history and the win that put us on the map. I think I am still hung-over from the post game party.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say it's a pleasure and honor to be accepted into your little community here. I've been reading through a bunch of threads and am in awe in some of the insights and information that is posted here. Can't believe it's taken me all of these years to finally find a great board dedicated to the Hoyas. Unlike most of you, I'm not a Georgetown grad (actually I hail from USC's School of Cinema-TV), but I've been a Hoya nut since my brother attended Georgetown Medical School between 1976-80 and would call me with the wrap-ups of the games he had attended earlier that evening. I heard all about Eric Shelton and John Duren and Steve Martin and Eric Smith. Then came the news of an exciting guard recruit named Sleepy Floyd. Here I was, between 14-16 years old, living in Los Angeles, and I'm suddenly obsessed with an East Coast team that I'd never seen play-- indeed, for a team that had yet to even appear on television (out here anyway). Finally came an actual TV broadcast-- the heartbreaking loss to Iowa in the regional finals in 1980. Even though the outcome made me ill, it was a thrill to finally see Duren and Shelton and Floyd playing such skilled, tough basketball. Not to mention take in the sight of that 6'10" fellow stalking the sidelines who went by the name of John Thompson. Anyway, that's how it all started, and I've been a faithful fan since-- through the glory years of Ewing to the Mourning-Mutumbo era to the Iverson years to the Esherick disappointments and right up to JTIII and what looks now to be a potentially dominant new era of the basketball program. I can't wait to see how the 2007-08 season unfolds and I look forward to sharing all of it with you fine folks. Thanks again for having me. Rich Welcome to the board. We can only hope you bring insight such as I do rather than the unwarranted insults of certain other posters.

Eurostar -- I'm with you on that one. That game also coincided with my worst hangover in college. Yeeeouch. hifi -- please, don't set the man up for failure hoyarich -- check out our discussion in the Pro & College Sports board's College Football thread. Sanchez is the real deal, and McKnight is going to be a monster compliment to Washington in the backfield. I'm going to homecoming again Ore St. in a couple weeks with some alums; should be a ton of fun (you guys know how to tailgate!).

HoyaRich = hifi looking for acceptance. Wrong yet again, but I won't hold it against you. I understand. And as taken from Ferris Bueller's Day OFF: It's understanding that allow people like me to tolerate people like you.

The triple OT NIT game at UVA was a classic. Braswell must have played every minute of that one. Returning to the topic at hand, and ignoring the ignored . . . The UVA game is a MUST in the "classic" column. Easily the best game in my four years on the Hilltop (which admittedly were rather unremarkable otherwise).

Dude, this is awesome! Another Hoyas fan and another USC fan! Welcome aboard Rich! We are all anxiously awaiting another great year from the Hoyas and hopefully SC will finally get its act together this weekend against Oregon (yes, I know they looked good against ND, but come on, it's ND! We'll know if they are for real after this weekend. God, I hope so.)
Don't know about all these old school games, I'm just old enough to have seen the end of Esherick and the start of JTIII (though I'm jealous as hell of my sisters who are both at Gtown right now--they didn't get 2 years of the Esh magic like I did). But the classic games in my time at Gtown had to have been the Duke game, the Roy throwdown on ND with less than a second (1st time Roy really did something of importance for the team and spoke of many great things to come, when people thought he was a lost project), and actually all the Cuse games while I was there (Melo & McNamara years) were pretty damn good -- though I hate McNamara now because of them.
