Wow, that’s a lot of ramifications for a KenPom ranking of a team that pretty much everyone, certainly including the fan base, and likely including both the present players and incoming recruits, recognized was in year one of a rebuild from the dregs. And should we really think that a KenPom abstraction seven games into his first year has anything to do with Cooley’s stated vision? I was expecting more against Merrimack. Maybe it’s just me. So wasn’t I, but I was only questioning the relevance to this team of continued focus on KenPom’s ranking in Cooley year one, since I assume that it will be a continuing theme.

Explain to me why that matters to this Georgetown team? Because it leads to increased fan attrition, decreased ticket sales, increased probability that our few decent players go portaling, certainly doesn’t help recruit good players, is a slap in the face to the few of us that kept our season tickets, stings cause we are paying an ungodly amount of money on coaching this year, and doesn’t quite align with all those things Cooley talked about when he got hired. Just to name a few. Wow, that’s a lot of ramifications for a KenPom ranking of a team that pretty much everyone, certainly including the fan base, and likely including both the present players and incoming recruits, recognized was in year one of a rebuild from the dregs. Does Goodman have anything to say about the (at least) two or three ticky-tack fouls called on Georgetown by the white-haired ref, or does the punishment received by Styles on the final play? As far as the actually effect of the tech, Georgetown already had gained possession and Massoud missed the free throw. So what’s the point?

A win is not a win. Not when it’s against basically a D2 program. Not that we had NCAAT hopes anyways, but games like this decrease your chances of making it. We dropped significantly in KenPom, Torvik, etc. 100% correct. We are now down to #189 in KenPom - 5 spots ahead of DePaul, which is about to fire its coach. kenpom.comExplain to me why that matters to this Georgetown team?

This board is tough. A win is a win. At one time we were down by 6 or 8 with little time left and still pulled it out. No explanation on why Ryan does not get any PT (??) A win is not a win. Not when it’s against basically a D2 program. Not that we had NCAAT hopes anyways, but games like this decrease your chances of making it. We dropped significantly in KenPom, Torvik, etc. I don’t buy it. Imagine what this place would be like if we’d actually lost. We are starting at rock bottom, and, in that context, a win is a win, and more important than what the “numbers” people have to say, which is largely irrelevant to us anyway.

Caught enough of this game to be able to comment. - To some extent, it's nice to see this team get reps in close games and pull them out. On the other hand, the fact that all of these close games are against Jackson St, Merrimack, and American means the odds of there actually being close games in BE play much less likely
- Tough Rowan game. Relentlessly isolated and attacked on defense. On offense, struggled to get into the paint, and when he did there wasnt much of a plan. It was just lower your head and try and finish over the defender standing there. Doesnt have the athleticism to finish over defenders. It's a process but either needs to master the floater or be willing to kick out to 3 in that situation
- Way too much standing around the perimeter, with the two guys up top just trying to enter the ball to the elbow. Credit to the team for crashing the boards but the core offense was tough.
- Just cant keep losing the turnover battle, you can see Cooley losing his mind on every mistake but there doesnt seem to be a solution there
- Massoud added a dimension that was missing when Styles was forced to the play the 4. A lineup of Epps / Heath / Styles / Massoud / Cook should have a chance but we just haven't been able to get everyone together. A little concerned the Massoud minutes seemed to limit Fielder, who actually looked good in his run. But we'll have to see if we can survive with Massoud and Fielder as 4/5
- The T on their coach probably saved us, if they're only down 2 at the end they're probably going for 3 and knowing us it would've been bad
Separate but had to make this point more broadly than anything specific to last night:
- I knew our defense was performing poorly, but even I'll admit I didnt appreciate how bad the numbers have gotten. On T-Rank if you filter on just this years games and take out the preseason adjustments, we're ranked 290th(!!) in defense
- The defensive plan feels more coherent and it looks like guys are giving effort. But I can't get over how similar some of the numbers look.
Four Factors | 2023 | 2024 | eFG% | 53.6 | 47.6 | TO% | 15.9 | 15.7 | OR% | 30.0 | 31.0 | FTR | 24.4 | 31.4 |
- Ok what does this mean. Yes our effective FG% is much better so far. Teams are taking and making less 3s, so that is captured there. But our Turnover % and opponent Rebound % look the same. And we're fouling more (last years team was ultimately so far away from shooters they couldn't foul if they wanted to but I digress).
- And when you factor in these are raw numbers against the KenPom 351st ranked schedule, you can see why the numbers look bad when you adjust for opponent. Do we really think we're defending the 3 point line better or are we just playing terrible teams? Rutgers is clearly the best team we played and they went 9-24 from deep (and they're not actually even a good 3 pt shooting team just a high major)
- Of course the roster feels like more of a driver than anything super structural, but this was the argument used with Ewing and I won't shy away from it here, are we really saying our roster cant be better than 290th? 7 games in but I couldn't have imagined a worst start for our defense
Hoya Saxa
It’s an odd thing. My eyes tell me we are much better coached and have a cohesion that we haven’t seen in years yet the numbers don’t bear out any improvement. I thought no way would a Cooley coached team be any worse than a Top 150ish type of defensive squad. I think not upgrading C will be a huge mistake. I never thought Cook was good enough to start and that’s holding true. But the other thing is I think we’ve underestimated the liability of the small backcourt too. This is strictly an eye test observation—often faulty— but it appears to me that we are at least forcing opponents to run more time off the clock (is there a stat for also that?) and are giving up fewer uncontested, easy three looks than in the post. Based on last night’s sample, Massoud’s arrival may help the D down low.

Rowan Brumbaugh gets major respect from me for even making it to the floor. It seemed quite clear he wasn’t well. I appreciate him gutting it out. And yet he was our major ball handler after Epps went out, and played a significant role in beating their pressure in the second half. For this he gets grief for four assists and three turnovers.

Cooley coached a fine game tonight, particularly in the last several minutes. I doubt that we are biting our nails with Epps available. Negative: the wings aren't consistently running the offense. Yet.
I also did not realize that Massoud has hops.

Hoyas -10; O/U 140 Merrimack shoots only 26% from 3. Play decent perimeter defense, and stop the easy two pointers in the paint, we cover. As a Hoya fan you should know better than this. Of course they will shoot 60% from three lead by someone you’ve never heard of. My money is on Armandas Plintauskas.

I keep thinking of The Gharun Hester NIT game at UVA. Can't remember how far down Hoyas were, but it was an incredible 3 OT win on the road to end the Cavs season.. fun! Gharun was a lefty as I recall. Pretty good memory of him hitting a deep corner three (maybe more than one) at a key point.

I’m good with taking a free basket. Ultimately SH was done in by allowing Josh Smith to shoot 13 free throws and make seven. Speaking of curses.

No coincidence that Cam "Terrell Allen" Bacote was a bit of a quiet catalyst to GU ending the game successfully. GU at of a li between h +15 with him on the floor and he doesn't make mistakes. He also plays pretty good defense at the guard spot. Kudos to he and Bristol. My eyes tell me Cooley uses Bacote as somewhat of a coach on the floor. Lots of talk between the two, combined with Cam’s experience.
