Cooley probably thought he could get more out of this crew despite knowing that we were far from elite.
Don't think he thought we'd be this bad.
Hopefully this season will humble him.
This is a new era for all coaches and fans. The pre-NIL days are gone for good.

This is the worst team we've had in a long time, personnel-wise. Ewing's last 2 teams were better in talent. Cooley would have those teams looking respectable. Cooley was just in the sweet 16 2 years ago. It is not like he forgot how to coach the minute he left Providence. III's last team was better. Same with Esh's last team. Don't fault the players. They are doing the best they can. You don't have to watch the game to predict the outcome. No need for extensive analysis of "why?". We just aren't good. We don't pass the eye test. Look around league. Look around college basketball, and then look at us. You can't blame Cooley except for how he assembled the team, maybe. He was going to get a pass because it is his first year anyway. We've heard that story before how the new recruits are going to fix everything. I hope so this time. We gotta fight and scrap the rest of the way, maybe squeeze out a win or 2 for morale sake for the players. Do you believe the team of Aminu, Carey, Dante, Rice, Riley, Holloway, Billingsley, Wilson, Tim I., Clark & Mutombo was more talented than Gtown's current team? If so I have to disagree great

Austin Freeman was a 5-star McD and one of the worst defenders of the past 20 years. It’s obvious that defense is fix #1. If defense is Cooley’s priority, then he cannot take a player like him because he hasn’t been able to turn this group into good defenders. Cooley has to start with good defenders. Of course we'd love to land another Monroe who also was a 5 * - ranked #1 power forward in the nation and #6 overall. Monroe was not a defender as well. He was a big man known for his passing ability. We missed the NCAA tournament his freshmen year with Freeman and got bounced by Ohio the next year. Despite all of that, I'd take Freeman and Monroe right now. I'd take those days of when we used to complain about those squads to what we have right now.

Planning for the future is from days in the past, unfortunately. With the portal, NIL,etc. the future is now. Yes and no. Most top teams have their core they recruit and hold on to, to get them to the NBA (or will as one or two long term players through the portal). Looking at the tournament the last 2 or 3 years the sweet 16 has 8 to 10 teams that are mature teams that grew together. Many of the long time top teams who lose players to the pros or a few to transfers struggle to get a team to gel and have top end success. But, many of the programs doing well from the big 5 and BE are recruiting 2 or 3 and pick up from the portal 2 or 3. Many times the portal pick-ups are players they initially recruited. The transfer portal and NIL changed things, but seems to have destabilized top end teams from their usual high end success (as losing top players to pros and transfer portal), but the levels below them have seemed to maintain some stability and are getting to the tournament. The top 50 talent is thinner in NCAA due to G-League Ignite, other pro leagues aimed at high school and recent grads. The top end talent that gets to the NBA is a smaller pool from the NCAA. Maximizing NIL may drive things more for players that don't have an NBA avenue and other looking to get exposure through the portal have a difficult time as teams getting exposure are only picking up one or two players. The world changed quite a bit, but also stayed somewhat the same. Recruiting still matters a lot, whether for new college recruit or second team to transfer to. The coaches who recruit well and have deep books with relationships will continue to do well, but in a different way. I get what you are saying, but 2 or 3 years ago is a lifetime ago given how things have changed and continue to change. It is hard to not look through the lens of what we've used previously.

There’s not much point talking about the game itself. But I will say this: If we’re really talking about Cooley building “culture”, then Heath and Massoud would be on the bench and Rowan and either Bristol or Fielder should start. Rowan and Fielder aren’t perfect, but they’re at least trying. Effort has to be the table stakes to play for Gtown. Effort is not only the table stakes to play for Gtown. Effort and talent are the table stakes. Not only to play for Gtown, but to compete in the Big East. We are not just losing, but we are not competitive in the league.

Current state.
The old regime is gone.
So are the old days of college basketball.
Move on. lol
Those days are gone.
Transfer portal has change everything, especially assembling a team.
Hopefully Cooley is recruiting his tail off because we can't keeping going to gunfights with knives.

The reason we need 2-3 high quality transfers is to let the young guys continue to develop at a normal pace without crushing their confidence. We’ve got great depth next year if the lineup looks something like: Starters - Epps, transfer, Styles, Transfer, Cook (or Sorber) Bench - Rowan, Fielder, Sorber, Mulready, McKenna I think this is a perspective you could have before the portal. I am not sure it applies to today. This right here. The landscape has changed for College Basketball (and Football). You don't know who is going to stay or leave anymore.

This is the one of the weaker G-town team we've had in a while.
Cooley is a good coach and with a proven track record. However, he is bringing a knife to a gun fight on just about every night in the big east, personnel wise. He has to recruit and recruit well.
It is his first year. He has to do more than just coach. Especially at G-town. Has a lot of fighting against him.
In the era of the portal, a rebuilding year might be hard for fans to comprehend.
Change can be painful. Regime change was desired. We have it now.
Let's back the coach while he is starting to get the program up and running.

We need to junk this game up and get open 3s. If teams want to push out on our shooters then get it to Cook. This team is desperately missing a Wahab to dump the ball into and get easy buckets or get to the line (24 mins and counting without shooting a FT). Can't trade 2 for 3's though. Gotta shoot from the 3 reliably.

We closed out a game with a win.
That block would make Mourning proud.
Making strides.
