At this point, for the 2024 class, Hoyas should either swing for the fences or target kids who they feel are perfect fits.

85 or so nationally and 7 Big East wins next year would be amazing.

In a year or two with more conditioning, he ought to be a problem for other teams.

He looks like a very solid player who will play immediately.

IMHO there is a night and day difference between DNPs and playing even less than five minutes a game. Those guys still contribute to the outcome of the game and ought to stay involved in the process. Plus it adds depth when injuries happen. There is a role for guys who do not play much- find them a way to see the court and contribute.

Most of You Con's talent came from high school kids they recruited and developed. Same thing with Creighton. It remains very possible to do that.
For every team like Miami that reloaded in the portal, there are others like our Hoyas, in which portal additions did not work out. It is not about the portal versus high school. It is about building a team. And the expectation that every program can (and should) just "reload" every year is unreasonable. We should strive to build a good program over time. It will not happen overnight. If we are really good in year two, like we were under JT III, then great. Bu it is not "good in a year or two or bust."

Timely article... "The transfer portal is a blessing for new college basketball coaches throughout the country. The wealth of available talent has never been more obtainable. T.J. Otzelberger inherited a two-win Iowa State club and went to the Sweet 16 the following season thanks to a new-look, transfer-heavy roster. First-year coach Jerome Tang led Kansas State to as high as No. 5 in the AP Top 25 poll and a spot in the Elite Eight. It wouldn't have happened without key transfer portal additions like Keyontae Johnson, Nae'Qwan Tomlin, Desi Sills and many others. The days of multi-year rebuilds centered around developing youngsters might be over." 247sports.com/longformarticle/from-rick-pitino-to-chris-beard-how-new-power-6-coaches-are-atta-210331678/#2169115Looking forward to seeing how 4ever spins this… Spins it? I just flat disagree with most of it. If it was that easy to flip things with the portal, then it would happen all of the time. People focus on the few times when it works and tend to ignore than myriad other examples when it does not change the program trajectory of the program or even makes things worse. Look, the transfer rules are what they are for now. I am not saying do not take transfers, and everyone does. But the idea that it is a blank slate every year is toxic and crazy. And much of the best talent still is coming out of high school. The most important part of the job always has been and always will be talent and fit evaluation. If you can get good players who fit and school and system, you will be in good shape. And it takes time to do that after winning thirteen games in two years. No part of that is a spin job.

Coaches frequently are made scapegoats for underperforming players. It is easy to blame the "guy in charge" who did not take a single shot. The point was about market value and that contracts do not equate to guaranteed or immediate performance.

No, how much you pay has to do with the market value for that particular person at that particular job at that particular time. Do see you every NBA player with a huge contract putting up big numbers and winning? Just because someone has a big contract does not mean that the expectations should be unrealistic.

And of course there are still recruiting cycles. The best teams will get talent out of high school and retain that talent, at times for four years. Just because there are lots of transfers now does not somehow throw out the notion that it ought to take a few years to turn things around.

And how much we are paying the coach has NOTHING to do with how long it will take to rebuild.

6. What Should the Expectations be for a $6 Million Dollar Man? Not my position, but some (or at least one on here) think $6mm per should buy you a coach that executes more quickly (like now) on #1 and #2 and at if not on par with, at least close to least on par with #4. Probably sufferings of the last few years (or realistic?) but I'm on board with KenPom 100 next year, bubble at minimum year two. Year 3+ minimum expectations need to be a tourney bid 4 out of every 5 years. Teams in the vicinity of KenPom #100 in 2022-2023: 93. South Alabama (19-16) 94. Nebraska (16-16) 95. UNLV (19-13) 96. St. Louis (21-12) 97. San Jose St. (21-14) 98. James Madison (22-11) 99. Southern Mississippi (25-8) 100. Indiana State (23-13) 101. San Francisco (20-14) 102. Wichita State (17-15) 103. Tulane (20-11) 104. UC Irvine (23-12) 105. Akron (22-11) 106. Charlotte (22-14) 107. Washington (16-16) kenpom.comI know 100 is a nice round number, but it's pretty bad for a high major team to be ranked around 100. My take is people are so warped by how brutal Ewing was, the filter isn't what it should be for a program like Georgetown. You can't have it both ways as a fan - you can't say that Georgetown is an attractive brand, Cooley's a great coach who deserves $5M-$6M/year and we have plenty of NIL money to bring in the players we need, but we should be happy with KenPom 100 in the first year. Being at or around 100 would be a huge win next year. You can be a good coach doing a great job and it can take three or four years to get things going. The NOW-NOW-NOW mentality is amazing to me.

Players win games indeed. The most important thing for Cooley to do is upgrade the talent throughout the roster. He is in the process of doing that. It will take a while.
