As a deeply delusional Hoya fan, it seems to me that the transfers out are coherent with the talent we are prioritizing and bringing in, and that the announcements appear to be in concert as well. As the coaching staff recruits and strikes deals with talented players, the players on the existing roster seem to be informed/aware of this and making moves accordingly, which would correlate with some degree of candid communication with the staff. And, to date, the incoming talent is superior (or at least, better fitted to our needs) vs the talent that is departing. But I’d like to see at least one quality big man commitment this week to affirm my rose-colored view of things.

Big whiff on Sorber, edited accordingly.
Are we onto anyone in the portal who can help us from 3?

Beautiful to see the Mack commitment affirmed (seems like nothing is real in CBB until Tipton posts it). Obviously we are also in the hunt for a rim protector, with Cliff Omoruyi perhaps our top target. And we have a newfound alliance with Team Takeover, while hopefully achieving at least detente with Team Durant.
Once we find a center, assuming nobody else breaks for the portal in the meantime—no guarantee of that, clearly—that would leave us with a roster of: Guards: Mack, Epps, Mulready, Guard TBD (Ben Hammond?) Wings: Peavy, McKenna, Fielder, Williams Bigs: Center TBD, [edit] Sorber, Cook, Mutombo??
Where are the remaining gaps? [deleted, transfer speculation] If Cliff O turns down our NIL bag, what other big men could we target/are we targeting? Is Hammond the right fit assuming he’d want to stick with Kenny J?

Pure speculation, but is the plan perhaps to try and announce a Mack commitment and Johnson hire in tandem?

The team was atrocious this year. A complete embarrassment! I would be in favor of whatever has to change to improve to an even half decent level next year. If that means total roster turnover, I will accept it. Even if on principle I hate to see a player like Brumbaugh departing, it would be coherent with an upgraded backcourt, which the team desperately needs. We won't really know what we're looking at outcomes-wise until we get through all this transfer portal madness. In this moment however, I'm more stressed about losing a chunk of our coaching staff to Hampton than any specific transfer departures. We need all hands on deck to recruit some dang talent to this roster.

I truly have no idea what to expect here. Rumors of $4-5MM budget for Cooley and Mark Fox to woo top transfers, but what will that yield? Judah Mintz, Dug McDaniel…Terrance Williams??? A bunch of guys from Providence, just to make their fans that much more psychotic? Our whole current team jumps into the portal again? Primo Spears brought back on a lavish new deal and an entire hotel room filled with candy?? Like any true (delusional) Hoya fan, I will be following closely with anticipation of an actually competitive team in 24-25, but no comedy of errors could surprise me at this point.

If Cooley and Tomlin see a mutual fit, I think we should be excited about the possibility. Certainly Coach has plenty of inside intel from Massoud to draw upon. This is not a situation where someone would be recruited over or pushed aside because we have AMPLE frontcourt minutes available at the moment and Tomlin would be playing pro ball by the time our (excellent) next recruiting class shows up.

Wow. I love to see that he has a versatile game that adapts to what his team needs to win. Cannot wait to get this guy on the Hilltop!

Players can enter the transfer portal as late as 4/30. Based on what I see some national reporters/coaches bemoaning on Twitter, beyond the players already in, there are others (esp at mid major schools) whose representatives are shopping for the right offers before they jump in. While I think it makes sense to go all in for Dickinson, if that doesn’t pan out—which is my assumption until I hear for sure otherwise, Nerlens’ haircut permanently shattered my confidence—there are probably other players who can be recruited that aren’t on the transfer radar yet. I don’t think plan B is “small ball and Mutombo.” Especially since we know Hoyas clearly have no compunction about snaking other schools’ talent away in stealth!

Storr isn't coming here. Dual was our guy and we let him get away. in this era, I don't think any recruitment is ever over. Cooley will just be chill about it and plan to re-recruit Dual once he hits the portal in 1-2 years

Hoya Saxa! Can’t let a top 100 guy from the neighborhood get away, glad he’s coming back home. Let’s keep it rolling, we need bigs to complement all this backcourt talent!

I’ve always thought it was tacky to disparage the play of individual undergraduates if their outcomes don’t meet our expectations.
(That will probably be an antiquated point of view in a context where those players are earning six figure salaries paid out from booster-funded collectives.)

The Providence fans have my sympathy—one of them spoke quite eloquently on the Hilltop Hoops Twitter space last night—but at the same time, PC is apparently turning around and hitting the reset button on GMU’s rebuild by grabbing Kim English. Basically how these things work. If Cooley crushes it for the next few years and gets snagged by Kentucky or Duke or UNC, I could imagine worse fates for the Hoya program overall.
One thing’s for sure, given the tenor of his departure from PC, Cooley has burned the ships. He HAS to succeed at GU on a significant scale, or let his legacy perish in the attempt. As a Hoya fan, I love it

I have wanted Cooley to coach the Hoyas at least dating back to the last coaching search, so I’m excited!! Given the universe of realistic outcomes, the stakeholders involved in the decision, and the all-too-real possibility of a disastrous hire (Amaker, Dawkins, a mid-major phenom who fails spectacularly), I think this was the best outcome we could have hoped for. I understand the concerns about his ceiling, but I believe Cooley will restore the Hoyas’ pride, rejuvenate our swagger, and fix a lot of aspects of the program that have languished for decades. As a bonus, our games with PC are going to be must-watch and I hope to see a nice rivalry developing with SJ as well. Hoya Saxa and welcome Coach!!

It’s not like all the colleges had a fantasy auction of coaches and we lost our minds and overpaid for Cooley. If he takes the deal, it’s fair market value. And obviously, as those other coaches get their contracts extended/renewed, their salaries will rise as well.

to all those clutching their pearls, I would submit that (1) there is no way the alliance of Catholic schools gets their current TV deal without Georgetown’s brand equity; if JDG had decided to go Patriot League and bail out of big time athletics, there would be no BE to speak of (2) if the BE schools hope to avoid getting squeezed out of the tourney by the big football schools in the years to come, we’d better know how to knife fight. PC ultimately wants/needs a feisty and competitive GU more than they need Ed Cooley

Cooley is a strong coach with a track record of making the tourney consistently from a Big East school.
He clearly values GU basketball culture, which doesn’t matter to a lot of folks on this board but matters a lot to key decisionmakers.
He has successfully managed the portal/NIL era.
Broadly speaking, he is acceptable to all factions involved in this search, which many other candidates cannot say. Whether he’ll accept an offer from GU is really the main question.

Entering the portal isn’t irrevocable and any new coach could theoretically re-recruit any of these players. They’re smart to jump in the portal regardless since a waiver is assured if it does become the right move for them to go.

Wholly expected but a pleasant surprise nonetheless. I hope the university president listens to the athletic director and the fans who have stuck through this nadir and we hire an experienced, competent collegiate coach who can take us to the top of the Big East. Someday I’ll reflect on the poignancy of this tragic tale but right now I just feel relief.
