Saw this on another Blog site, listing Gtown as the #2 worst facility in FCS college football:
"Georgetown's is up there, considering their resources and how beautiful their campus is:
Even if Georgetown doesn't have any desire to support the football team, you'd think they'd want to improve the appearance of that blight upon an otherwise beautiful campus. Some brick stands, even if just to double the height of the current temporary ones, running the length of the field on either side to match the surrounding buildings would make it a great looking place to play."
Seems so simple and logical, this would easly be about 10k of seating and if they turned the giant construction pit in the North Endzone into a nice grassy slope it would be such a nice little stadium.
Man I hope the AD is wise enough to roll the completion into the planning and funding for the IAC!

So, at a quick glance (MSF Competion Aside) - Gtown could be in a somewhat similar position to 'Nova in terms of being able to play and get paid for "warm-up" games against FBS competion to offset costs for the program with what seems to be a fairly small investment of an additional $1.5m per year towards the FB program? If this is the case, and may allow for Gtown to in say 5-10 year make a play to go I-A (like 'Nova is doing) and protect Gtowns position in a meaningful BB conference - I can't see why the school would not make the investment. Seems a really necessary insurance policy from my perspective!

DFW might know better, but I think 40 Scholarships makes a program elligible as a BCS "Counter" and gtown at that point could be playing early season games against lower level FBS teams for a pretty heafty payday which also, could help to offset some of th upfront cost of improving the current program.

I guess what I was envisioning for Gtown over the next 5-10 years was the completion of a MSF to hold say 10k or so, which really is not a large stadium - but it could be done to make it look really nice and deserving of an institution like Gtown. Also, lets say that they add 10 scholarships per year for the next 5 years, which can't be totally outside the possibility for a school with a $1B Endowment. That would get Gtown to an equivelant level of 'Nova currently. What would this cost - like maybe a few Million more a year for the next five years? To me, this would be a worthwhile investment if it were to help secure the future of the entire athletic program (BB especially).

So do you think that if somehow the BE survives this mess, providing Gtown BB a stay execution utill the next round of realignment in a few years, that the Gtown Administration will realize the importance of having a FB option (like 'Nova) to potentially move to I-A?
One would think that with a moderate spend increase each year (schollies and facilities) for the next 5 years or so that Gtown could move into a position similar to what 'Nova has now.
Thoughts?

Curious, with hind-site being 20/20 - What do people think about the lack of commitment to the Gtown Football program and athletic facilities (MSF, IAC, Etc) and the impact that this has had on putting Gtown BB in a very seriously bad position with almost no leverage in determining the future of this storied BB program.
What if, over the past decade Gtown had invested in the FB program and facilities to perhaps get them to a level equivalent with ‘Nova? Would we be in a better place than we are now, would we have more options and not be so reliant on the whims of other schools / conferences to determine the future of the Gtown BB program?

For those at the game - curious to know if the MSF was full and if it stayed full through the full duration of the game? How much of the crowd were students?

First reason that came to my mind was that the admin was too embarrassed by having the worst facilities in all college sports highlighted on TV. I watched the games on the internet and TV several times and the camera shots of the dirt, port-a-potties and tiny 500 person visitor bleachers (smaller than almost All HS) was horrible. So embarrassing that I actually don’t pipe it onto the Big Screen for fear that my 9 yr old might ask some really difficult questions. I would have to believe that the school and/or AD has the same concerns!
Gtown – Please give the school, athletes, students and alumni facilities that are not the most embarrassing in all of college athletics!!!!!!

season tickets - a step in the right direction! store.cstv.com/store.cfm?dept...6&store_id=427Question: would it help the cause for the completion of the MSF if say all the readers of this board bought 2 season tickets for a total cost of $60 and Hoya Blue did the same and FB relatives and it sold out say half the seats for the 2500 MSF field even though they would be empty on game day. Would it make the administration take notice and consider investing in a real stadium or would they say Thanks for the cash and make no motion towards improvement and invest that cash into a new since building or something? Thoughts?

Just curious, with all the effort that is put into discussions on this board about ways (large and small) to improve the game day experience and make Gtown FB something that that student body might want to get interested in supporting – does anyone think that even the slightest change will be made this season to improve things – even just a little bit?

Bruce Simmons and the Gridiron Club, any way to find out how much has been collected to date towards the development and build of the MSF? I'm sure that quite a bit of funds were collected 10 yrs ago, when the project began - but I'd be curious if any of those funds still exist or if the MSF funding would be essentially starting from scratch if or when the University decides to move forward on a plan.
BTW - I love the Modular Concept, what a massive bang for the buck AND the time to construct is amazing!!!

I don't really expect the band to be a draw, but I do expect that it will limit attrition. Halftime at GU is horrible, it boring and if we are not winning it in itself provides a great excuse for the students to leave.
If inviting marching bands from MD and VA, does not work – although I don't see a harm in trying. Does anyone have any other ideas for what can be done it halftime on a small budget to entertain the spectators?
Remember Local GU Rock Band has already been thrown out there!

A few side bars off this thread to try and get some offseason discussion going:
1) Schedule - Happy to see Howard back on the schedule, we need a Cross-Town Rival and a schollie program that we can beat is perfect and respectable, why don't we also "play up" against Towson who although in the CAA is the worst of the worst in the CAA conference?
2) Game Day Environment - I went to the Alamo Bowl this year (Ok State v AZ) and truly enjoyed the halftime entertainment of the several HS bands that played at halftime, this was on top of the 2 Univ bands - but het ya’ gotta start somewhere!
Note - Not trying to bash our band to be clear, but I have to say the monetary support for our tiny band is on par with the FB program and the MSF, at least at Rice they have fun with it and openly recruit faculty to join / play and have fun with a small / unfunded band!
I digress - I am sure that if the school invited DC, VA, MD and especially Metro Catholic HS schools to "Play" at the Halftime Shows at GU, they would accept - likely happily! Why don’t we do this, the lack of anything at Halftime is a killer – people freak now without 10 FaceBook updates per minute – ya think they’re gonna make it through a halftime without beer or entertainment – let’s get real!
Also, smaller note - Band families travel and they travel in force, I expect 200 – 300 kids in two HS bands would bring 500 + people as fans each week to the game, sad if your TX - but 500 guaranteed attendees at GU home games - HUGE!
Questions - Are we too proud to ask HS to come play at GU? Does it cost too much money, I would expect it would be an “Honor” for a HS, but need to ask the question? Would our Band be Editeded? Are we just too lazy to ask?
3) Game Day Environment - How much does it cost to get a GU "Rock" Band and a quickly portable Stage / Sound System to allow them to play each week at Halftime? (Ha, Ha, that would require a sound system and we can’t even get a Scoreboard – I know, SAD)! 4) Game Day Environment – Honestly, Jack the Bulldog with the Tee-Shirt gun to run around at Halftime and create some fun – too expensive? Jack is already at the games, I think we have a gun for BB games, is it the Tee's that cost too much?
5) Game Day Environment - How much does it cost to go down to M-Street and ask the Gtown supported businesses to kick-in a few buck each home game? Maybe find some clever way to give away a “Free Dinner @ Tombs” , Bar 2, Bar 3, Bar 10, The Gap, Urban Outfitters, Ma & Pa's, Domino's and any other delivery Joint dependent on Gtown for their livelihood, Etc.? You include these businesses and about 50 other establishments around Gtown to give away a free coupon for each home game and your are talking some serious door prizes? I am not a Marketing Major – but this does not seem too difficult!
Big Note - There is sooooo much money in the Local Gtown Community (Bars, Restaurants, Hotels, Landlords, Embassies, Other Churches’ and /or Athletic Programs) , but no one asks for cash or support imaginatively, it's just an annual football player booster call - "I am XX, I play football - you gave this much last year - wanna match or exceed"? Really, I played, I made these calls and to me at the time it was worse than going to watch films or run sprints - players go to school to play and make grades - they are not trained in Cold Calling and frankly don’t care, cause if you are a JR or Sr in the program, you know that stadium is not gonna happen in your college lifetime?
Why have we done this type of stuff over the past 15 years, it does not take a “Degree from Georgetown” to figure out how to make a day at the game somewhat fund for a very low cost to the University – yet it has never happened? The deafening silence on the field at halftime is a killer and truly, truly makes the experience at the MSF less than what any typical American HS student sees on a typical Friday Night in their hometown regardless of size! It has to be apathy or worse desire to mire or die!
5) Tailgating – 80% of the other Universities in the Nation provide for this in some form or fashion, it draws crowds and makes the experience – but it’s been discussed on this board 1m times, enough said!!!!!!!
If we can’t have a place to play, can’t the school at least have fun watching the games?

Happy to see the season opens with two night games, this will hopefully help drive attendence! Also, three confirmed Ivy's in 2012 is a nice positive schedule improvement!

Does anyone have any idea what the school paid Seating Solutions for the 2,500 seats + 3 Temp Press Boxes that currently make up the Gtown FB field?
DFW, I'm expecting that if anyone knows it would be you???

Wow - 21 Commitments identified and they all look pretty solid, this is unusual for this many to be posted or identified this early. I hope we keep all of them!
Beyond that, by the looks of the size and quality of the recruits - this seems to be one of the stronger recruiting classes that I can remember.
Do others tend to agree?
I am curious if anyone knows what is being said to recruits about MSF, Scholarships in 2012, Future of Patriot League, Etc....
Anyone have any info on this?

I get your points, they are valid - but I want to be clear - I am not arguing for a 10k seat all metal bleacher stadium – a la, High School. I do not expect Gtown to replace an eye-sore with a larger eye-sore. I want the nice seats and architecture and aesthetics and everything else the I have proposed in some of my earlier posts, including your addition of the brick encasement to hide the under-structure of the bleachers. I want quality along with just a bit more quantity than you think is practical. No big deal, I suppose our vision and goals are the same, but you would be satisfied with 5k and I want the same look and feel, but just a bit larger. Regardless, in either option we are proposing prefab metal bleaches with seats attached, which have to be way less expensive than pouring concrete for the entire stadium as I believe has been the basis for the architectural plans in the past - regardless of size. To me if the school went 5k or 10k pre-fab, either way would be an investment in the millions and not in the tens of millions, so I hope that they consider it and do it – but I’m not going to hold my breath as this is a fun theoretical discussion but not likely to happen either way any time soon.

I suppose my thinking is that if the school went the metal bleacher route, the cost would not be too significantly more expensive to go from 5k to 10k, so why not do it and have something in the middle of the campus that looks as if it belongs at a university as opposed to something that is smaller than a lot of HS stadiums these days.
