This was inspired by something SirSaxa wrote in another thread.
I say it's the best time since 1989, when I fully expected us to sweep through the Tourney to Seattle and take the title.
This is the first year since that I really think we can win it all.
So great to be a Hoya fan right now...

Best team since 1989. 1996 was good but nobody in the middle (O was a PF in reality). Size, talent, experience at guard...'89 it is.

Fully agree - this is the best team since the 89 team. I'll always remember the 89 team and that tourney run: almost losing to Princeton in the opening round (I was watching in McDonough), then the frustrating loss in the Sweet 16 to Duke. Most frustrating was that we had beaten Duke earlier in the season at the Cap Center as part of the Big East - ACC challenge...
(caveat: I think I've got the details right, but am going from memory!)

This may be the best team since '89, but I think this is the best time to be a Hoya fan since 95-96. Highly ranked, lots of exposure with Iverson, memorable matchups with heavyweights like UCon and Nova, a big time BE tourney (I forget how that ended), and a good run in the NCAA's until we met those cheaters from UMass.

FWIW, during last night's telecast, they said the Hoyas are on their longest conference winning steak (8 games) since '88-'89.

The loss to the Dookies came in the Elite Eight game in 1989 - and I think our win over them at the Cap Center didnt come until two years later...

Since last March when we went to the Sweet 16. We're not there again yet.
Cautious optimism...

In 1989 we beat Princeton, Notre Dame (LaPhonso Ellis among others) and NC State (Chris Corchiani and Rodney Monroe I believe - "Fire" and "Ice") before bowing out to Duke at the Meadowlands on Easter Sunday. It wasn't fun at the Meadowlands.

I'm with boston. Not to be a buzz-kill, but this team has yet to live up to last year's accomplishments. Until then, last season was more successful than this season. If this team loses in the BET or in/before the Sweet 16 in The Dance, how is this season any more enjoyable than last?

Best since Iverson's sophomore year. He was the most exciting player in Hoya history - absolutely FUN to watch every time he stepped on the floor. While some teams before him might have been better, they were not more exciting to watch, often grinding out games with rebounds and defense. And Iverson's team was pretty darn good as well.

This squad has the POTENTIAL to be 1989-good. Echoing Boston and Buff above, they aren't as accomplished as Brandon, Ashanti, Darrel and the Sweet 16 run from last year.
Look, it was great to run a highly ranked Marquette squad off the court at home but running a higher ranked tOSU team of a court in Ohio to get to the Sweet 16 is a more impressive accomplishment than anything this year's team has done.
The sky is truly the limit for these guys...they have the potential to be one of the -- if not, THE -- greatest Hoya team ever...
...but not yet.

If this team loses in the BET or in/before the Sweet 16 in The Dance, how is this season any more enjoyable than last? Because we believe RIGHT NOW! I may be disappointed by the results in March or I may not. But right now, for the first time in 10 years I really, truly believe we have a chance to win it all (and I feel better about this team than that one). I'm not going to try to even out my feelings on this team by being cautious in any way. What's going to happen? They lose to Winthrop and I'm upset for a few days? Big deal! Hey, it's cool to think we'll get hot and make the Final Four last year or that we'll put together some magic after Nat Burton or Don Reid and make a run. But it feels way better to have the v-chip kick in halfway through a top 25 game because it's unsuitable for kids to watch such a beating. There are no jinxes just people trying to avoid disappointment. Go Hoyas, win it all!

I'm talking about how enjoyable it is and how much very realistic optimism surrounds the team and program. I know I'm having much more fun following the team this year than I was at this point last season - and every season since 1989. Don't get me wrong - that run to the Sweet 16 was fantastic last season, but it was a little unexpected, and we had some serious low points at times last year. As for the Iverson years, they were lots of fun, but kind of hollow - never felt like we had a legitimate chance to win it all. Point is, this year is EDITED fun. (Just figured I'd edit myself there)

Interesting Duke-Georgetown thing going on here.
In the 80s, we were the powerhouse and Duke used its win against us to catapult itself onto the national stage. Last year, we may have returned the favor.

If this team loses in the BET or in/before the Sweet 16 in The Dance, how is this season any more enjoyable than last? Last season's team lost most of its games against the top tier Big East schools of that year, but, hey it beat Duke at home and that's all folks really care about. Last year's team also spent most of the first half of the season unranked just like the current group. Last year's team never had an eight game winning streak in conference. Last year's team didn't win on average by as good a margin of victory as this season's team. Nor did it shoot nearly this well. I love last year's squad and it indeed did a few things better (like not lose to ODU at home). But are we being revisionist? First folks appear to put the loss of Ashanti Cook on an equal footing of, say, Sleepy Floyd. And early this season when these Hoyas were struggling people made last season's team seem as if it was one of the all time great Hoya squads. Ultimately the '06-'07 Hoyas have to win one more Big East game and a couple of NCAA tourney games to reach the level of last season's team. We'll have to wait to see it can do that. Right now though this year's version is looking like the better team. As for '89...I know I mentioned back in the fall this team had the potential to be the best Hoya team since Zo's frosh season. But that team went into the season highly ranked and stayed that way all season long. That's no surprise considering all the upperclassmen guards with BE experience on the squad. This year's team has a long way to go before it can claim being as good as that team.

the 96 run was lots of fun until the last 6 minutes of the bet finals vs uconn. bit premature to say we can win it all. we havent been really tested yet since we gelled. want to see how we do vs pitt. if we cruise by them then we will know.

Going into my senior year (88-89), I was convinced that the John Thompson coached US Olympic team would take gold, and the Hoyas would win the National Championship. As it turned out, the United States took Bronze and the Hoyas got to the Elite Eight (and won the Big East).
Who could have predicted that, with the benefit of hindsight, those results would not look half bad?? Eighteen years later, even NBA players have a hard time winning the bronze. As for the Hoyas, I'd be thrilled to win the Big East and to get to the Final Eight. Back then I felt cheated that I was the first class since the Class of '81 that did not experience a Final Four.
