I love our how our current "pure center" adds a dimension of his own to the team and the system, and I don't see why we wouldn't want another pure center. Also, any developing center would have to be crazy not to want to come to Georgetown. The success our program has had in developing centers, and the amount of experience and advice our former centers give to our current centers makes Georgetown the premier destination for a big man wanting to go big time. I think JTIII's recruiting should consist of sending this Boubacar fellow game tapes from Roy's freshman year (perhaps the game at McDonough on his birthday...uggh) and game tapes from this year. If Sylla doesn't want to come after seeing that, then he will have failed the intelligence test, and we won't have wanted him anyway.

Thanks Giga...I thought that's where I read it but I was searching for the article in the Times archive and coming up empty...if I remember correctly it was a brief mention at the end of one of the Hoya Reports

Stoneridge is a basketball factory but I think it's legit. Mike Dunleavy sends his kid there and there are some others who have gone on to respectable programs. We want a 7-footer for rebounding and defense at least. What would happen if the Hoyas didn't have Hibbert and we played a team that did? Vernon or Patrick or Jeff guarding Roy? That wouldn't be good.

If he received the bulk of his education in Africa, he's probably better prepared than 90% of the kids applying for admission next year.
Probably speaks about 8 languages, including Calculus and Differential Equations.
But gotta be careful about some of these Prep schools...

Recent update on Sylla from last night is that he's visiting Auburn this weekend and doesn't have Hoyas on his final list of schools. He's a project in that he's only averaged 2 pts and 2 rebounds per game--but is new to sport. His teammate Mamadou Diarra is more coveted--but I'd stay away from Stoneridge Prep kids--seeing the Real Sports special on "basketball factories" and featuring Stoneridge Prep--it's a mess. Despite being cleared by NCAA--what the report showed was how easy it was to get clearance and how difficult it was for NCAA to police these type of programs.

Jack: I hope our standards are higher than the NCAA's and the bad news is enough for me to be very wary of any of these prep schools. Of course, every kid deserves to be considered on his merits, but no one can claim to be surprised or excused for failing due diligence given the lesson learned from the Lutheran experience. This had better not be shruted. What was "the lesson learned from the Lutheran experience"?

What was "the lesson learned from the Lutheran experience"? Hopefully it was greater vigilance in vetting the credentials of any potential student-athlete, especially those coming from schools that do not have any history with the university. I certainly do not ever want to see Georgetown associated with another story like that. The more I hear about Stoneridge, the more I want to stay away from this kid.

This had better not be shruted. What was "the lesson learned from the Lutheran experience"? Georgetown got some negative press for recruiting a player (Egerson) from one of those diploma mills. When the New York Times did an article on those schools, they singled out Georgetown as a university that had a player from Lutheran. For an institution that prides itself on academic excellence, it certainly wasn't the kind of press we wanted. Egerson himself may have been fine academically (I'm obviously in no position to know for sure), but the simple fact that we were recruiting players from those types of "schools" was a pretty big embarassment that did our reputation no good.

Aparently according to some scout boards Henry Sims has narrowed down his choices between us and UVA, so if this is true we might not need to take a chance on another big man

Of this kid, at 7-1, is averaging two points and two rebounds per game, I don't want him period. I've seen enough of hoya big men of the mid-to-late 90's who couldn't score if you put them all alone in a gym for two hours.
