RB,
I only see your point if we were at capacity. What is the downside to expanding the student section to the upper deck if those seats would otherwise go unused?

RB, I only see your point if we were at capacity. What is the downside to expanding the student section to the upper deck if those seats would otherwise go unused? For right now, I believe the upper deck seats can only be purchased game-by-game. For many games last year, it wasn't even open. Although I highly believe that many students will be up there this year, it may be a contract thing with Verizon that prevents them from selling season tickets up there. And, logistically, if students knew that getting there late would mean being stuck up there, there will be a mad rush to get there early, and I'm pretty sure Verizon thinks the rush is already bad enough as it is.

Aren't there $5 seats available - if so there is no need for an upperdeck student section - buying tickets on a per game basis is cheaper than buying student season tickets.

I realize upper deck seats were only sold on a game-by-game basis. I am suggesting a change to that philosophy if the lower bowl is already sold out. Student season tickets in the upper deck would create a community. They could even have their own "Upper-decker" shirts. And there would be no additional rush as those student seats would have to be in the upper deck.

IF there is an upper deck student section, maybe they could make it a center court section -- that would be great for cheering/noise purposes.

Before I learned of the ticketing situation, I wondered whether HB would hit the wall around 1200-1500 tickets, which seemed to be around what was sold last year. That wall was broken at the Late Night at Leavey. Problem solved.
Imagine what MCI would look like if you take our season ticket to student ratio and imagine it playing out at a school the size of UMICH or Texas. There'd be no question that we could fill the Booth.

What would it really "take" to expand the student section to the sides of the court (or at least one side with both baselines as well)? Would this simply be out of the question because of "adult" season ticket holders and therefore, a significant loss of money? We have to think long-term here, so we need to figure out a way that keeps alums/season ticket holders happy and makes them come back year after year while making the fan experience as roudy and loud as possible.

Bingo - for each seat between the baselines (and, starting this year, a few in the adjacent corner sections), there's anywhere from $50 to $2,500 that's donated to the Hoop Club. This money is part of the AD's budget.

But is every one of those seats taken by season ticket holders? Couldn't we cluster people and then create an area for students?

Baseline to baseline should be alumni.
Everything from the corners onward should be reserved for the kids.
The second tier really are nice seats--sell those to the public who wants season tickets and overflow from below.
Then open up the top for everybody else as well as those courtside and some of teh lower bowl seats across from the benches for the big time high-rollers.
The financially-motivating seating was installed because nobody was coming in the first place so they needed to squeeze every penny out of the few folks they were getting--that, theoretically, shouldn't be a problem in the upcoming years so we should look towards improving the atmosphere and trying our very best to keep the good times rolling while we can.

Oh Jimmy .... you read my mind.
My thoughts immediately turn to the Duke game - the only time since I've been going to the Phone Booth (11/98) that it's been a loud, raucous, Hoya Blue & Grey clad lower bowl. I know I'll be at every game this year. I can't imagine having a better time than with everyone in the lower bowl being part of the Sea of Gray.
