Jack, before you reply consider this: I only dislike Simmons because you like him. You're Moriarty to my Sherlock Holmes, you s.o.b.

Rick Reilly is annoyingly self-righteous. He sounds like someone's grandpa.
Simmons is nothing of the sort. So what if it is like hanging out with your friends? It's entertaining.

Oh, see that's how I see Simmons. He's like that annoying know-it-all at the end of the bar or on the train who sees you watching a game/reading the paper and he just HAS to give you his opinion. And to top it off, he thinks constantly mentioning 80's movies makes it ok. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if I were hanging around with him grabbing a beer... you know, every once in a while. It's just that its almost every... single... thing... he writes.

Buff, as a recently Christened Golden Hoya, were I you I would have responded to my post seeking Simmons alternatives with a quote from George Costanza:
"I like Mike Lupica."

I remember a column from a while back...I'm pretty sure he has revealed over the years:
1) his dad went to HC too 2) his grandfather went to Gtown (or at the very least, really wanted him to go there) 3) he has a love/hate relationship with JTII 4) acknowledged the long history between the Celtics and the Hoyas
But, as I've said before, I think Bill Simmons is a pretty funny guy, at least by the low standards of modern journalism. I like that he writes a lot of material and about a wide range of material. His angle (the sportsfan) is much more refreshing than many of the other angles out there and it is often enjoyable. While even I (a Sox and Celtics fan) find him a little Boston-centric, I also like the fact that he wears his teams on his sleeve and makes his biases public and honest rather than keep them private and undisclosed. That says, his analysis is usually pretty weak and I would never want him to be my sole source of sports information...

His Vegas and New Orleans Super Bowl columns were fantastic. I still refer to a new dealer coming to a hot blackjack table as "Mariano Rivera". He also p.o'd everyone in N.O. at that time by calling it a "Miasma"!

Rick Reilly? Seriously? Buffalo, I am so disappointed in you. I'm guessing you said this before taking a gander at his heartwarming adoption column? Perhaps you've forgotten about some of his other gems?

Perhaps you've forgotten about some of his other gems? I personally can't stand Rick Reilly. By "the best" I meant he's the best at this one-page, fluff, no analysis, entertainment-only crap. That's undeniable. I can't picture the guy writing an in-depth article about ANYTHING.

When my friend went to Simmons' book signing in DC, Simmons signed his book "G-Town reject Bill Simmons." Also, is he really from Greenwich? Greenwich is NOT anywhere near Boston.

His parents are divorced- he lived with his mom and went to HS in Fairfield Co., but his father remained near Boston, he went to Holy Cross then BU. He spent the first 10 years or so of his career working in Boston and his dad still lives in Wellesley, MA. I don't have a crush on him, I swear.

Buff - I think you need to go 5 posts without quoting Anchorman or the Family Guy before you can pick on someone elses reliance on pop culture.
With that said, Simmons has become annoying. I still read him though because he is better than most of the crap out there.

I find Simmons' occasional wrastling columns amusing. On the flip side, his occasional jabs at Dikembe are out of line. He would do well if he had 1/2 of Deke's gray matter.

I wonder which one? I don't know of any boarding schools in Fairfield County, but there are lots of the day school types.

I still read him though because he is better than most of the crap out there. Other than my old signature, I'm not much of a Family Guy quoter. I don't remember those all that well. I will throw out the occasional Anchorman reference, but I don't use one in every post to make my point, despite what you may think. Pretty much every single article Simmons puts out is dependent on some relatively obscure 80's movie reference to get his point across. It was entertaining six, seven years ago, I just happen to feel its gotten old. And like I said, I think it'd be entertaining if you were hangin' out with the guys and he was sitting at the bar, throwing out Karate Kid references or whatnot... I'm just sick of reading about it after all these years, that's all. All along I've acknowledged his "entertainment" value (which doesn't have to be much considering most sports writing is such instant-history, uninformed crap these days), I simply don't prefer him as a writer, that's all. To me it has become boring and repetitive. When he puts his mind to writing a thoughtful, analytic piece I think Simmons can be of use... those articles are just few and far between. The fact there is a drinking game based on the repetitiveness of his writing speaks for itself. Also, I don't have a grudge against him, ZoMourning, I just don't think he's that good a writer. I'm not going to reward the guy simply because he broke through via the internet, if anything that's a condemnation of all the crap that is out there, just like hoopsmccan wrote. I just can't seem to consider him a breath of fresh air when so very much of his material is so very repetitive. As for Reilly, like I said... I can't stand the guy. I just think he does the best job of spewing out those one-page fluff stories he and Simmons (amongst others who are far less talented than those two) are famous for.
