Alright so here it goes. These are just at-larges assuming the winner of all league tourneys.
In:
Big East(5)
ACC(3)
Big Ten(6)
Pac-10(2)
Big 12(2)
SEC(5)
MVC(4)
That's 27, and we need 7 more. The frontrunners:
FSU: They beat Duke. Although when their tournament resume looked about as embellished as mine coming out of undergrad. "Maryland" under "big wins" is about as good as anything I had under "experience."
UAB: They beat Memphis. But see above for the rest of their resume. I have a "BC in 2002" bad taste here because UTEP is ahead of them in the standings and throttled UAB by 28. The only reason I think UTEP isn't here is because they played at Memphis and UAB got them at home.
Texas A&M: They beat Texas. They've won their last 6 as well so they look better than they did early in the season. Although, they are Big 12.
Cincy: They beat locks (Marquette, LSU) and bubbles (Vandy, 'Cuse). I don't like 7-9 in-conference if they lose to WVU but they deserve it. A win @wvu and they really deserve it.
Colorado: They're playing like they don't want in. Wouldn't kill them to win a couple in a row including a Big 12 tourney game. But they'll have the Oklahoma win, a win @penn (a stretch but they will win the Ivy), and versus bubble team UNC-Wilmington.
Syracuse: Wow it is slim pickin's ain't it? They just got blown out of the gym by the Blue Demons. But still 36 RPI and wins over Cincy and WVU. Of course beating 'Nova would really ice it. One win in the BET would likely do it too.
Someone told me they should be in:
California: They're in the Pac-10 which is the 7th-best conference in the nation and they beat UCLA at Pauley. They just lost to ASU at home. For lack of a better option, I guess they're in but I'm not impressed.
They have a shot:
Bradley: Had to win out to have a shot. They did. And they actually won at Depaul unlike the jokers above. Might be in considering there are some teams above that may have to meet in their conference tournaments.
Vandy: Beat Tennessee at home and you're in Vandy. I would say they can thank us for a signature OOC road win but they also swept Kentucky. The team that couldn't miss in the clutch versus the Hoyas and Oregon, lost to Georgia at home by 1 or they'd already be in.
Seton Hall: Obviously a win at Pitt puts them in (it helps their RPI either way). But I think they also might get in with a BET win over the #10 seed depending on who else folds.
Not going to make it:
Anyone from the CAA not name George: Sorry guys, gotta beat someone. "Each other" still doesn't count in this league and big conference cellar dwellars don't either.
Air Force: Your laugh here
Utah St.: The "road win at Nevada" argument wears thin versus "swept by New Mexico St."
UTEP: Early season nailbiters (1 to Texas Tech, OT to LA-Lafayette, and by 4@the Pit) doom the second-place team in C-USA. Can't get a good enough win in the tourney either until the final vs Memphis which seals it anyway.
I can't believe I'm saying this:
Louisville: Win at UConn and you're a contender heading into the BET. Oh by the way the last time they lost at home was to the eventual national champion last year. Good luck.
Regular season champs who can burst bubbles: George Mason, George Washington, Bucknell, Memphis, and the usual suspects.
