"There was his one-dribble move from the foul line, when he picked up the ball and held it high over his head like a steak platter, took one long step and then flicked home a 5-footer. " A simile I haven't seen before. Good to hear Roy say he wants that degree in 4 years.

It seems Mr. Doyel attended the game in South Bend.
Apparently he wasn't taken with Roy's lefty hooker in the lane that sent Rich into hystrionics during the broadcast. That shot is nearly as reliable as Roy's dunk, which also shows Doyel hasn't seen Roy play much.
Other than that, pretty accurate assessment of where Roy is now and where he can go.

I demand an apology to Doyel from some of our more reactionary posters! The guy has written perhaps the two most interesting non-local pieces about the Hoyas all season--in one night. He loves us!

This does lead to the question... on the current roster how many NBA draft picks are there?
Roy Hibbert - Yes. Hate to say it, but Doyel is right (I simply hate to agree with him).
Jeff Green - Yes. Probably after junior year instead of sophomore year as I had thought this time last year.
Bowman? Don't think so.
Cook? Nope.
Ewing, Jr? Sorry. He will be great for us, but not NBA calibre.
Please note - this is no knock on the team. I am strictly curious. Heck, I never thought Don Reid would get an NBA paycheck!

Hibbert, Green, and Ewing have NBA futures IMO.

Let's worry about their NBA futures later on guys--rather have them be All Big East, All BET, All Regional, All Final 4, and develop over their careers as top 5 picks (talking in general, not specific players) then worry about how quickly they can get to the league. Money is great--but college is about MAXIMIZING your potential to earn--and it is same for athletes--do you want to make money or maximize your ability so you can make a lot of it and for a LONG time??
There is a huge difference in someone like Chris Wilcox and someone like Tim Duncan. Wilcox had the potential to be special if he stayed in school, he bolted. Duncan had potential to play/contribute in NBA if he bolted, he stayed and he's now a legend and set for life. Everyone is different and some factors do contribute to why/when someone leaves for NBA, but most kids need to learn that patience and maximizing your EARNING ABILITY is more important then earning some money, not fullfilling your potential, and ending up a good player who has less earning power then he would've if he stayed another year or so in College.

Ewing's a pro from what I've seen. Since he will be taking over for Bowman I will say he is better at getting to the hole, better at finishing, stronger, more athletic, a better ball handler in the open court, a better post up game (though far from great on that front), a better rebounder and a better defender. Bowman has the edge on three point shooting although Ewing keeps getting better on this front and made more tha 50% of his attempts in the KL this summer. Bowman also has a quicker first step and a height advantage. Both of them are about equal in terms of passing but Ewing plays with more attitude (and I mean that as a compliment).
Ithink Bowman will get drafted in the second round if he continues his mostly solid play. I truly think DJ will get a chance to impress some people at a camp and get a look during the second round too. Ashanti is solid enough to play pro too but it won't be in the NBA.

to be honest, i think, other than hibbs, the most improved player is ashanti. some of his drives to the hoop tonight were amazing and his outside shot looks great. if he can keep his handle under control and continue to have 5+ assists per game, while averaging double digits, he will get looks on the pro level, even if that is not the NBA...he has really, really impressed me with his play over the last 10 days.

No offense to any of the board geniuses but Don Criqui said after last year's Roy-tastic destruction of ND "If he stays all four years he'll be the #1 pick in the draft."
The talent wasn't exactly invisible to everyone. Now let's work on Jeff staying all four and being the #2 pick.

Bowman is at least a second rounder. We'll see if he sticks w/ a team.

This is a pretty accurate article. he would certainly get picked in the late first round this year just on size and potential. He has a TON to learn, but he played pretty well last night. I disagree on the offense comments. For the minutes he gets he is very productive and gets plenty of touches. It just looks disconcerting to see him out at the three point line with the ball (which opens up the entire lane for back door cuts by the way).
Roy just needs more time and patience.
Green is a 1st round pick next year if he wants to be and that's it on the roster folks. Bowman won't go in the 2nd round.

Haven't seen this anywhere yet, so here goes. I was driving home from work last night around 11:15. Doyel was on ESPN radio. Granted he is typically an idiot talking head, but still, he probably reflects common perception for better or worse. Had some interesting comments I wanted to share (even wrote them down last night so I wouldn't forget):
1. Regarding the Bowman foul, Doyel said "that should have been an offensive foul for kicking Bowman in the gonads!" The host followed up saying why was he even close to the shooter to which Doyel responded Bowman wasn't even that close, he only got kicked on the kick-out on the shot. Now mind you at this point, I hadn't seen the game, only Rich's lack of description and the ranting on the chat board. Saw the highlight on ESPN (their "top play" of the night), really, stupid to even guard the shooter, but a TERRIBLE call. As Doyel said, "in the end, good vs. evil, good won (meaning refs vs. GU)."
2. Regarding current rankings, Doyel's take was probably dead on with most of ours. He think L'Ville is terrible, WVU is a top 5/6 team in the country, and UConn is a clear #1 based on the fact that Gay and Williams really haven't turned it on yet. Again, nothing ground-breaking to us, but a correct analysis regardless.
3. Most unintentionally funny line of the night. When asked what the best conference in the coountry was, Doyel responded it was the BE just over the B10 due to quality and quantity. He said he would take the "16 team deep BE just over the Big 10 which obviously only has 11 teams." Ah yes, obviously, the Big 10 has 11 teams. Never stops being funny / stupid / indicative of he schools in the conference.
4. Regarding his column on BoBo and JG, he clarified that a bit based on the e-mails he claimed ot be getting point out the development of Roy. Basically he sighted some stats on turnovers / points per shot and a general reference to "efficiency" stats. He's right for the most part.
Anyway, not much commentary, just thought I'd relay some interesting quotes...

"Still, Hibbert had enough touches Tuesday to score 18 points. He grabbed 13 rebounds"
He makes the above quote, but says he can not flourish in JT3's system, go figure.

I was thinking the same thing. We have a raw 19 year old kid who's putting up 18 and 13, and the "system" is holding him back? God, I'd like to see what he could do in another system.
