The schedule was and is fine. I'm not a huge fan of Stetson and Savannah, because we'd be much better off getting RPI 200 teams there instead of 300+, but other than that how can you complain? Oregon SHOULD have been an NCAA team this year. It's not JTIII's fault the team is struggling. Vandy likely will be. We could have beaten Illinois. We played like crap, and only lost by ten. We can beat Duke. UTEP is looking very much like a Clemson-caliber opponent -- a must win, but a good around 100 RPI opponent. Just because Oregon stinks and we played poorly versus Illinois doesn't mean the schedule was off. Oregon will compete in the Pac-10. The Pac-10 is just plain old awful for one, but all of the Ducks' losses are legit. Beware of the southwestern road game. Oregon couldn't survive the Pit, and the Hoyas have to make sure they don't fall victim to UTEP.

All I know is that 3 creampuffs at home beats the hell out of 9 home cupcakes. And the rest- roadies, good teams, etc- can only help if it's a trend. My $0.02.

I'm not sure that picking up Oregon this year was worth picking up Stetson and Savannah State. I suspect that by the end of the season, that trade off will be a wash, RPI-wise. As for the "kids need to study during exams" argument, I think we as Hoya fans have to be realistic about the numbers published on DFW's front page yesterday. This is clearly not a program that is putting academics first - which is fine, since the vast majority of competitive D-1 hoops schools operate in the same manner, and if we want to see W's, we can't expect straight A's. But the act that we are somehow holier than other schools in this regard just doesn't hold up anymore. No matter how you choose to spin them, those numbers were ug,ug, ugly. That's bull. There's a huge difference between admitting players either without the natural intelligence or academic skills of a typical Georgetown student and not giving them the time and tools to perform in the classroom at all. I have no problem admitting folks for their basketball skills, just like I'd have no problem admitting a really great musician with subpar grades. I'm a subpar basketball player AND a subpar musician and I got in. But there are certain requirements to graduation, and the players should be expected to meet them. And in turn, the team should schedule the way that best allows them to meet that goal. Personally, if we can play Fairfield, that's fine. Fairfield-caliber opponents are good. Or we could go the Stanford route and simply not play. And I don't really know how much a tough game would hurt academics, but I think it is pretty inconsiderate to just assume that the players wouldn't mind a tough game while trying to study.

I know GU cannot schedule in the same way for a variety of reason, but Dook probably cares at least a bit about their player's academic interests and still managed to play Valparaiso and St. John's, two easy wins at home that also will not be deadly RPI games. By comparison, GU should strive to play teams like Fordham and LaSalle during this period- games they will win, but at least A-10 level competition, and if you have to go to their place once every 3 years, so much the better, just do it before exams those years.

Also...When JTII was getting ridiculed for scheduling such opponents, he fired back that when he was trying to build his program, these were the only types of teams that would schedule the Hoyas...why should he turn his back on them now that Georgetown has had some success? Disagree. Yes, St. Leo was there at the beginning, but the teams that were scheduling Georgetown in the 1970's (Fordham, Holy Cross, St. Peter's, Manhattan, St. Joe's, Fairfield) all fell off the schedule by 1980. As for the MEAC's, Morgan State wasn't even an opponent for the first 10 years of Thompson's coaching tenure, Bethune Cookman didn't arrive until 1992, and, as MEAC folks will tell you, Georgetown never did schedule Coppin. Thompson earned the right to be selective on his schedule, but it set in place a national mindset about scheduling that follows the school's reputation to this day. notice I did say "types"...they weren't all super-powers was the point I was trying to make... and he did earn the right to be selective...and he was very smart not to schedule Howard and Coppin in the 70's and 80's...

The only reason Stetson was at McD was because Bon Jovi was playing MCI that night. Who was Bon Jovi playing and what his RPI this year? Maybe we should pick up ol' Jon as one of our OOC matchups for next year. I believe the selection committee looks favorably on wins over 80's hair bands turned 2000's pop. Man i can hear the "moonlight and valentino" taunts already...

Bon Jovi had both surprisingly low RPI and album sales last year.

Anybody who thinks we'd ever schedule Bon Jovi is livin' on a prayer.

Jovi will still make the NCAAs though, for the same reason they get televised nationally: reputation.
They have a home matchup with Aerosmith, which they should win, and a tough road trip where they face both Journey and Poison, then one more at home against Seton Hall. Should be enough to bump their schedule strenght to respectability.
C'mon Coach Thompson, don't be a pansy...schedule Bon Jovi!!!

I would rather schedule Pantera, Scorpions, White Snake, or Yes than schedule Bon Jovi

Scorpions?! Really? Man I'd take just about any of those over Europe's greatest rock band.
I agree on the Seton Hall game, though. As bad as they are, I think Bon Jovi is the best act going right now in New Jersey.
