Here’s hoping it is Way More than a damn curtain drawing attention to the lack of fans. Few ideas have failed harder than the attempt to improve the atmosphere of a dead arena or amphitheater with a huge black curtain screaming APATHY.
If the Hoyas are going to stay there at all in long term they need to completely repurpose that into something that looks like a purpose built 12k facility eith a whole lot of new uses besides. A downtown Athletics campus. An extension of the law campus.
Something other than an abandoned nhl/nba rink in a crime ridden area on the downslope again. Chop the upper deck out along with the hockey infrastructure snd make it look unmistakably collegiate. This is if, a massive if, Ted gives it to us more or less and we are IN CHARGE of scheduling.
Or we should leave that place forever and make what we can at mcD. We all know that getting Mcd adequate is the only indisputable next step. An emergency one at that.

Excellent quote: this encompasses everything from a major renovation to upper deck curtains. Yeah, I would say that is the #1 unknown for us in all of this right: how serious is Monumental - and, for that matter, the District - about investing in a more intimate, but modernized (if not particularly 'luxury') facility. It's not *impossible* - concerns about rising crime, homelessness, and associated urban blight bad vibes aside, the metro area continues to grow at a good clip, as does demand for events. Right now, a lot of that demand is absorbed by what used to be called the Patriot Center, which is now managed (but not owned) by Monumental. To whit: Now, it ain't going anywhere - it's much more convenient for folks who live in the growing DC further-out suburbs and exurbs than somewhere in or near DC proper. But it was also built in 1985 and is never going to have an 'entertainment district' around it (unless George Mason gets veeeery progressive-minded, and I don't mean in a political sense). It's just a fundamentally different beast, the main convocation center of a large commuter school that has gradually been turning less commuter-y. The Anthem is a phenomenal venue, but it tops out at 6k. There's definitely a niche for something in the 10-14k weight class, like what is now CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore. No one's going to confuse it for The Palestra, but if Ted feels inclined to try to salvage his reputation with the denizens of DC, keeping the House that Abe Built running as "DC's Venue," which right now it is too oversubscribed to really serve as, could be a way to do it.

Can we please..please not humiliate ourselves by even talking about playing on another school’s campus? I mean, no one is, really? Either Monumental and DC keep Cap One around and we share co-anchor tenant status there (best option imo) or we pay the rent at Potomac Yard and reroute the GUTS buses due south instead of due east. Everything else, such as where we play exam period games against the University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople (Evening Campus), is details, details. As an aside: the ticket prices for the USF Dons at Chase (where they play twice a year max and close the upper level when they do) are not reflective of the market-clearing price for Georgetown at Potomac Yard, where filling 18 nights a year earns you a better rate by comparison. Also as pricy as the DMV is, it's not as psychotic as the Bay Area.

Yeah Ted does not want to have to keep giving such a generous rent rate to georgetown at the new arena, what is he a charity or worse some kind of socialist? But on a totallllyyy unrelated note I wonder if taxes are going to go up in the Nova area due to a large amount state and local funds just disappearing into thin air and into the pocket of the one person who stands to benefit from any of this and is already a multi billionaire

This is in reference to the women's basketball post in the program thread about them just beating Wake Forest moving to 9-1 this season which is awesome. It is another reason to consider putting bleachers in Mcd even if it was only 4k, they and the other sports there deserve better which can elevate their programs, and offer flexibility that we sorely lack in the program and institution. And sorry to fellow alums, but I think the only way to sell it to the neighbors is that it will be a purely on campus personnel allowed to any mens basketball games held there if they were to happen (and have nights for free tickets given to grad students). I believe in Cooley's promotional abilities to get even faculty and campus staff to take up seats (heck the maintenance staff at my high school had so much school spirit, we loved them). So no additional traffic and you help other programs within athletics that can garner more internal support. Get one of those pop up food/drink stands for outside when possible. You can also point out that more concerts/events can be held there which will contain students for periods on weekends when they occur which is another benefit (I believe that to have been a reason some thought the 2000 era plan for rotating the court could get by). It will also make Mcd more suitable for great Midnight Madnesses in the future. Even if only a couple games get moved there a season, you can save money long term. Framing and compromise is the only way. FOMO is a very strong force in the generations with social media and having a lot of students flocking somewhere tangible on campus can easily encourage more to stack up. We don't need even a reduced Cap One for a late night 200+ kenpom game, instead you can make it a better time, save money long term, better crowd, and on campus.

There are no shortage of reasons the University (before anything else) absolutely must get their act together and get McD back up to 4k yesterday. Even if we eventually end up in a gifted reduced MCI…we just can’t afford as a university for McD to be truly high school sized a year longer. If 4 can be 5 or 6 great. But do it NOW. EVEN IF THAT MEANS 4k. Should never have been reduced. Its frankly kind of an emergency now. One that was predictable…and predicted…for a half century now. Really did not exactly sneak up on ya Healy. This is in reference to the women's basketball post in the program thread about them just beating Wake Forest moving to 9-1 this season which is awesome. Stay in Capital One Arena and become DC's team. Not if it is just an abandoned rusting nba/nhl shell in an increasingly dilapidated part of town. This has slow death written all over it. Just come home.

Or another option is passivity until the moment of undeniable disaster which isn’t foreign to decision making out of Healy

The front page article by DFW is essential Hoya reading. A well thought out, researched, and insightful piece of writing. The Capital Campus expansion idea should be in memo form on the Office of the Presidents desk. Well done. Editorial: Georgetown Needs a Plan

www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/12/28/alexandria-capitals-wizards-arena-virginia-monumental/One starts to get the feeling that there were a lot of Is left undotted and Ts left uncrossed in throwing this plan together in an expedited timeframe. A lot of it may come down to electoral and partisan politics. Alexandria is firmly blue, but Justin Wilson had already announced that he was not running for reelection as mayor, and I can't help but think the looking announcement of this plan was a big reason why. Meanwhile, the whole thing was being put together while Glenn Youngkin's star could still be considered on the rise. After the Virginia legislative elections this past November gave Democrats control of the House of Delegates to go along with the Senate, taking Youngkin on over something that can be framed as a billionaire giveaway starts looking a lot more tempting.
