What is the problem with indoor track? It wasn't always this poor.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "poor"? On the women's side, Connecticut and DePaul earned a lot of their points in field events that we do not compete in; we dominated several of the running events from the 200 on up, earning firsts and or seconds and thirds in each race. And then a first place in the 4 by 800 and a 4th in the 4 by 400. I agree that the men were a little underwhelming compared to some past performances, but Joshua Paige set a new Big East record in the 200 meters and we also saw a nice first place finish in the 4 by 800. I expect the men to rebound and do well outdoors.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "poor"? Just that it seems indoor track is no longer a consistent competitor for conference championships. The men's last indoor championship was in 2001 and its last top three team finish was in 2015. The women's last indoor title was in 2012.

Good points. But, as a large state school, Connecticut will probably win men's and women's championships, indoor and out, for the foreseeable future. As far as I know, we have no competitors in the pole vault, the weights or the pentathlon for the men or the women and our jumpers have been non-factors recently. We will have to rely on great running performances in each event to have even an outside chance to win a championship.

Also, I believe that the BE indoor meets had more middle distance runs, like the 1000. I am not too sure about that, but it seems as if they stripped it down to the regular runs - 60, 200, 400, 800, mile, 3000m, 5000m. We used to pick up many points in those events. And again, no regular track on their own.

We will have to rely on great running performances in each event to have even an outside chance to win a championship. I'm not sure I understand the large state school argument. Georgetown regularly won the indoor (and outdoor) big east championships prior to 2000. And keep in mind this was an era where the Big East included Syracuse, Rutgers, Miami, Virgnia Tech and Boston College - certainly all would be considered major sports programs (prob better than UConn). Has something changed in the program's ability to recruit a diverse group of athletes that can compete across all events? By no means is this a slap against the current team as the athletes are producing VERY impressive results in the events they compete in, just curious why the Big East rankings have slipped when debatably the big east isn't as good as it was pre-2000. Men's Big East Indoor Results 2001 - 1st 2000 - 1st 1999 - 1st 1998 - 1st 1997 - 5th 1996 - 1st 1995 - 1st 1994 - 1st 1993 - 2nd 1992 - 2nd 1991 - 1st 1990 - 1st 1989 - 1st 1988 - 1st 1987 - 2nd 1986 - 2nd 1985 - 3rd 1984 - 4th 1983 - 9th Men's Outdoor Big East Results 2001 - 1st 2000 - 3rd 1999 - 1st 1998 - 1st 1997 - 1st 1996 - 1st 1995 - 1st 1994 - 3rd 1993 - 1st 1992 - 1st 1991 - 1st 1990 - 1st 1989 - 3rd 1988 - 1st 1987 - 5th 1986 - 7th 1985 - 5th 1984 - 5th 1983 - 8th

It’s a good question overall. I’m sure on some level, it speaks to how successful Coach Gags was at both recruiting and developing talent.
it’s also possible that, while it was never in great shape, losing the track on top of Kehoe field (and not having a 400m track to practice on) was one of the things that happened around 2001.
As a 2001 Hoya grad, though, and one who was friends with a lot of track athletes, I always had the sense that the seasons went XC-Outdoor-Indoor, in terms of strength to weakness, as Georgetown strengths (and especially depth) were in middle distance and distance. Sprints always had some good-to-great athletes, but not a lot of depth. And field events would occasionally have a competitor or two when they lucked into a recruit, but we’re never an area of focus.
It’s interesting having the Hoya men’s swimming and diving team picking up the other side of that setup, where diving has put them over the top in the last two BE championships, in part because several teams don’t have a single competitor.
