In October I could hardly wait for the season to begin. Now after three months of selfish play, careless and unforced TOs and minimal effort on defense I can hardly wait for it to end.

This was even worse than it looked because Marquette let up in the last seven minutes. At that point it was 80-55 and we had given up 1.36 Points per possession, which is beyond atrocious. It ended up at “just” 1.2, which still needs a telescope to see the next worst team in the conference. And it seemed to me Marquette made quite a few silly unforced turnovers, so our defense was even worse than that.

Have to confess I was pleased to be able to watch an effective ball moving offense. A beauty to behold. Only wish it was our team.

Ask the question, is there any sense of urgency to change the situation? I doubt so. It is complacency at its worse. You all work and succeed in all lines of business. Ask yourself the question, if you worked for an organizational culture such as that instituted by the AD and President, what would you do? I believe I know the answer to that question. Patrick is not the problem but the victim of a complacent university leadership.

Have to confess I was pleased to be able to watch an effective ball moving offense. A beauty to behold. Only wish it was our team. Kolek is a very fun player. He always has his head up looking for an open teammate. He is not that quick or athletic. He doesn't even have any crazy good ball handling skills. But he sees the court so well, and knows exactly what his strengths and weaknesses are. He's a perfect fit for the offense Smart is running. Every time he had the ball, the was probing aggressively for the weakness in the Georgetown D, and attacking the instant he saw an opening. Which he found almost every time he touched the ball. Early in the game, Heath was trying to face guard him to keep him from even getting the ball; and then getting right in his face when he did get the ball. But this commitment to intense defense did not last all that long, and it was not working particularly well anyway Kolek is the anti-Primo. he plays the game in exactly the opposite manner of Primo. I would bet that Kolek has never taken a contested 15 foot jumper with 15 seconds on the shot clock in his college career. I doubt he has ever taken an outside shot that was not wide open except for in the final seconds on the shot clock. Kolek can't go to his right, he can't jump, he's not even a particularly good shooter. But he dominated the game today offensively, and he is the engine that drives a top 15 team. And we have Primo forcing shots or turning the ball over on the majority of his touches. It's a sad, sad situation.

Not the only problem, but a big problem.

I was thinking as I watched the game that Kolek reminded me of Larry Bird in that he has abundant basketball IQ and it shows every time he's out there. He isn't particularly quick or all that athletically impressive (physically), but he is working and thinking the whole time. He prepares assiduously, he sees the floor so well, and he gets his teammates the ball usually at the exact right time. If you ever let yourself go down the YouTube Larry Bird rabbit hole, you hear alot that Bird was one guy that lots of really good players hated to play against. It wasn't only because of his sublime gift of trash talking but because he wore you out. You couldn't take your eyes off him. Michael Cooper was one of the NBA's best defenders back then, and he said Bird was maybe even more dangerous without the ball because he never stopped moving and creating a floor that lead to good plays and lots of baskets. Someone said that Jordan was amazing with the ball in his hands, but when someone else had the ball he slowed down mostly and wasn't a chore to chase and cover. I think Kolek has some of the same talents and mindset that Bird was said to have.

I think Kolek has some of the same talents and mindset that Bird was said to have. Kolek even has Bird’s “gift of trash talking…”. I was sitting near some young 20-somethings today who were in on the court seats. One fan in particular started some good natured banter with Kolek, who at points would look over at him and respond colorfully. The best was an exchange where the fan gave him some grief, and Kolek immediately went coast to coast and buried a three — then stared the length of the court back at the fan, then quickly followed in transition with one of those crazy hoops of his in the lane. He stared again, then in an ensuing dead ball came over and fist bumped the fan and exchanged pleasantries (which they really were). Highlight of my season so far was watching the kid play and seeing this interaction/friendly swagger….

This is not the Brandon Murray that played at LSU. That Brandon Murray was fine being a 5th option on offense and working his tail off on defense and accepting his role - but when you're promised minutes, shots, and being 'the man' - what can you expect a 20 year old to do? Cultural failure, as is everything. Pat never should have exclaimed early in the season that Murray was our best player. What kind of message is that sending?

Non-game observation - I am reasonably certain that I saw Michael Graham, Mike Hancock, and Michael Jackson at the game chatting at the baseline near the Hoya bench during halftime. Anyone who can confirm this?
No mention from the Cap One announcer and camera on them for the video screen as typically happens with former players.

Graham is pictured just over the right shoulder of the former player in the red jacket in the photo above. He is at every game these days, in row AA section 110 he cheers up a storm (and provides lots of coaching, especially when team is on defense in front of him in the first half).
