Keep in mind Brandon Murray turned it over 7 times. If he doesn’t do that, good chance Connecticut doesn’t score as many baskets either. Point being there are a lot of things that happen throughout a game that lead to the final outcome.
There’s just a lot broken with this team. Any monocausal explanation for anything relating to our team’s woes is bound to be inaccurate (other than maybe pointing to Ewing).

Actually, defensive rebounding is an important part of defense. Each offensive rebound essentially eliminates a missed shot. And like most other parts of defense, we are very bad it. We allow fully 31% of the opponents shots to be offensively rebounded, 277th in the nation. Granted, we are even worse at forcing turnovers or missed shots, but this is an important element in our awful defense.
Also the late/early discussion is silly. Take a baseball game. I am an Astro fan, so Let’s the say the Yankees lose 8-7 when Judge strikes out with the bases loaded in the ninth. Would the Yankees have won had Judge gotten a hit? Yes. Does that mean that If, in the same game, Gerrit Cole gave up eight runs in two innings, that performance had nothing to do with the loss? Of course not.

This follows closely with my read of the game as well. There have been plenty of games this year which fall square in the lap of poor planning, bad coaching and horrific defense. This wasn't one of them. Q and Murray make their shots (several good looks) and free throws down the stretch, and Hoyas win this one. Certainly a half way decent performance in a loss does not excuse the rest of this disaster season. If anything, it shows how capable this bunch could be with proper direction. I just don't see how people can say this isn't a game we lost because of horrific defense when our defense in this game was WORSE than our Big East overall and average defensive efficiency (which is 11 of 11). Put differently: We gave up 1.15 points per possession to Connecticut (which is horrible). The only game we played all season where we scored more than that (which is pretty good on offense) was against DePaul (which we did win). If we score, say 1.10 points per possession, we should win a lot of games; but this team would not because its defense is so bad. If we give up this many points per possession on defense, we simply aren't going to win many games (and we haven't). We actually have had some games where our defense was pretty good or even had respectable numbers. But the UConn game wasn't one of them. I really think three things are at issue here: (1) We have been bad for so long on defense, that it makes it seem like slightly better defense is "good" when it isn't. (2) The slow pace of the game made it seem like our defense was better than it was, but UConn still had a ton of uncontested shots and easy layups/dunks/open threes. (3) People are focusing a lot on the last 4 minutes of the game, which was 1/10th of the game played. For the sake of argument, even if we assume those last 4 minutes had okay defense, and our offensive players missed easy opportunities, it doesn't take away that the other 35 minutes or so featured pretty bad defense. 2003 when you look exclusively at PPP you take no consideration into the flow of the game. For instance if Karaban misses the 1st 3ptr and we get the reb what would UCONN's PPP had been? I'm thinking it would still be over 1.1 but we probably win the game.

Had we scored more PPP than them, we would have won.
But if our offense depends on the flow from forcing a miss and getting the rebound, that is too bad, because we do not do that very often.

How could anyone say our defense wasnt terrible in the UCONN game and the reason we lost? Mind boggling.

Again…to what end? Barring winning the BET, there’s no post -season for us. I would bet my yearly salary there is at least 1 transfer among guys getting key minutes. There’s 0% chance of roster continuity so it’s not as though we can assume that any experience these guys get playing together will carry over to next season. Right now ever is just counting down the days. Golly gee, I dunno. I mean, I love basketball and the Georgetown Hoyas, I guess. What are you in it for! World domination? Table top fusion? A Hoyaboya Peace Prize? Not sure I understand what you are talking about
