In the weeks leading up to his commitment to the Hoyas, the 2020 Windsor High grad had narrowed his potential landing spot to three schools, none of them being Georgetown. But like it has throughout his basketball career, Spears’ path took an unexpected turn. "I was just as surprised as you guys," the sophomore said last week. "I had already cut my list down to TCU, Oklahoma and Maryland. When I came for my official to Maryland, (Georgetown) Coach Pat (Ewing) and Coach (Kevin) Nickelberry saw that I was in the area and reached out. My close friend (Georgetown guard) Brandon Murray was in my ear just telling me about the program and the plans they had for him and how they would fit me into those plans with us being backcourt mates." www.journalinquirer.com/sports/college/uconn_mens_basketball/all-roads-lead-home-for-georgetowns-spears/article_73f167d6-803d-11ed-bf01-d3903163219d.htmlHuge mistake if he cares about more, in basketball, than personal stats. Good choice if school was the priority when deciding.

Good choice if school was the priority when deciding. Reading the quotes, seems like personal stats are pretty important to him... "It's gone great individually," Spears said of the season. "But as a team, I think we have some things that we need to get together. … Everybody is eager to win and kind of just in a gritty mode to get some wins. So I think we're going to turn it around and be great."

"He's an exciting player, very quick and dynamic," UVA men's basketball coach Tony Bennett said, "His first two years at Georgetown did some good things, they had some struggles at times, but he I believe his first year, his freshman year was the MVP of the Big East Tourney... With current point guards Kihei Clark exhausting his eligibility after this season and Reece Beekman hearing his name in NBA Draft chatter, Harris provides Bennett and the Cavaliers an option in the lead-ball handling role moving forward. "He's quick, touches the paint and is a competitor and loves the game," Bennett said, "So we're excited he's here, he's practiced a couple times and it's good to see. Talk about quick, he and Kihei and Reece on the floor going against each other."... "Helps us prepare when he's out there for the teams we're playing," Bennett said, "And he can really use, kind of an advantage to come in mid-year to get used to us, our program lifting wise and just comfortable with the guys." www.cbs19news.com/story/48105277/quick-and-dynamic-dante-harris-joins-cavaliers

The right person in the right environment will thrive. Our current environment is toxic. Players come here to fade. Murray, Spears, Heath and Akok would thrive in a good setting, under a good coach/system.

The idea that young men are not capable of making that decision and came here “to fade” is concerning.

Unfortunately, the better talent couldn’t offset the lack of leadership and strategy.

I am very happy for Dante going to the Cavs. Obviously, his ability to handle against pressure, drive and kick, and play D would have been nice assets on this team...

I am very happy for Dante going to the Cavs. Obviously, his ability to handle against pressure, drive and kick, and play D would have been nice assets on this team... Do we know for a fact that he got a scholarship? I don't think UVA fans would refer to his transfer to UVA as a "recruiting win" if he was a walk on. And do walk ons get "official signing" attached to their names? And you don't need to redshirt a walk on, do you? In a surprise recruiting win, the Virginia Cavaliers landed Georgetown point guard Dante Harris as a rare December transfer commit. The 6’0 lead guard will sit out this season and have three remaining years of eligibility, per reporting by Hooz Got Next. After a breakout freshman season in 2020-21 that saw Harris win Big East Tournament MVP as the 8-seed Hoyas made a miracle run to win the championship, his sophomore year didn’t go as planned and Harris stepped away from the Georgetown team before this year. www.streakingthelawn.com/2022/12/21/23518617/uva-basketball-virginia-cavaliers-dante-harris-transfer-georgetown-tony-bennettTony Bennett announced the official signing of former Georgetown guard Dante Harris to the Virginia men's basketball program on Wednesday. Harris will enroll at UVA for the spring semester but will redshirt the rest of the 2022-2023 season. He will join 2023 four-star recruits Blake Buchanan and Elijah Gertrude on Virginia's roster for the 2023-2024 season. The Cavaliers had been searching vigorously for their point guard of the future to succeed Kihei Clark and Reece Beekman. Dante Harris fills that need, as he comes to Charlottesville with two years of point guard experience at a major conference level and has three years of eligibility remaining. www.si.com/college/virginia/basketball/virginia-basketball-officially-signs-georgetown-transfer-dante-harris

But there is just a wee bit of fandom in the “recruiting win” language.

I am not sure why this is controversial. Wilson had no scholarship. Harris left, and Wilson almost immediately got a scholarship. He clearly had one.

“It’s been great,” said Harris, who transferred to UVA midyear. “Just the atmosphere here, the culture here, it feels so family-like. I clicked with the team so fast. It’s like I’ve been here [for years], with how well I clicked with them.”... “Georgetown had the best opportunity for him to come in and play right away,” Staples said, “and it fit his style, because Dante scored a lot of points in high school. He had four 50-point games his senior year, and I said, ‘Georgetown is going to let you just play.’ And I was hoping that long-term it would work, but things changed for him. But by being a solid player while he was there, he proved that he could play at a very high level.”... “I don’t have any hate towards Georgetown at all,” Harris said. “I just felt like we have a purpose in life, and sometimes if your time is up somewhere, God will let you know. So I just felt like that was my time.” In high school, he had no contact with UVA. But once Harris put his name in the portal, Staples reached out to the Cavaliers’ coaching staff. “Curtis made a call and wanted to see if we’d be interested, and that was all she wrote,” said associate head coach Jason Williford, who played with Staples at Virginia in 1994-95... Harris’ goals for the rest of the season? “I just want to get better at my decision-making, improve my shot more and just be a leader. Lead the guys and do everything I can to help the team win.” Bennett’s attention to detail has impressed Harris, who said practices at UVA differ from those he went through at Georgetown. “We do a lot of skill work, and I feel like that’s still important to this day,” he said. virginiasports.com/news/2023/01/24/harris-putting-extra-time-to-good-use/

I’m a fan. This was the key segment for me. It confirms something that we kind of knew already from other reports- that Ewing’s practices and teaching techniques are seriously lacking.

I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more attention. I’ve always wondered what it is that Ewing does in practices since it’s hard to believe we could do anything effective in practice and be as bad as we are.

It is a guess but im sure not focused on fundamentals. In my view if you are not teaching them or reinforcing them in college you are doing a disservice.
I wonder what teaching goes on in practice.

I’m sure as a professional assistant for all those years there was zero time spent on fundamentals. Players that make it to the NBA should already have these. May account for his absence of emphasis. Not adjusting after this much time though denotes stubbornness and poor insight.

Personally I’d guess he is the type that they do some warm up drills of rebounds and some disorganized distance shooting then scrimmage for the rest of the time
