"For a particular beleaguered, has-been college basketball power, February 2023 was a no-good, very bad month...A rare...victory mid-month was followed by losses of 22, 18, 17, and 20 points to cement a losing in-conference record. The program’s starters are currently upset or the subject of transfer chatter. The team’s offense is one-dimensional, its defense is completely uncompetitive, and its aforementioned head coach is the subject of continuous replacement discussion that has intensified by the game. This is not a description of 4-26 Louisville or 7-23 Georgetown. It is, of course, referencing a limping Syracuse squad that needs to take a good, long look in the mirror." orangefizz.net/2023/03/syracuse-hoops-must-change-to-survive-or-else/You have to think that Syracuse is a place that Pitino would refuse to move to ... but wouldn't that be a disaster. Nonetheless, DFW -- this is a great post and the highlight of my morning.

This paragraph about clinging to the past is instructive. I guess Mike Hopkins ain't walking through that door. SU’s three assistants are all former Orange players. The youngest of them (Gerry McNamara) last played at Syracuse in 2006 under Jim Boeheim. The other two (Alan Griffin and Adrian Autry) both played for the team in the 1990s. At this point, no one should treat them like the heroes of yesteryear who automatically know better. We ignore too often the role that ‘Cuse’s assistants have to help resolve festering issues. The Orange coaching staff is composed of Syracuse lifers, but it’s worth wondering what a fresh set of eyes from outside could bring to such a stricken group. Criticize Boeheim all you like, but he isn’t the only coach standing bewildered on the sideline as opponents rampage through SU’s watery zone.

Minor point, but it’s Allen Griffin, not Alan Griffin. Alan Griffin also played for Cuse, but as an Illinois transfer a few years ago — brother of Duke/Hawks’ AJ Griffin., both former HS teammates of Hoya target and UNC PG RJ Davis. Author is probably Cuse’s valedictorian….
On a brighter note, Cuse’s Manchurian Chancellor (GU grad Kent Syverud) appears to have done his job of presiding over the decline of Cuse’s bball program. (It begs the question if anyone has done a deep dive on Jack D’s background, since he has presided over a more precipitous collapse of our own Hoyas….)
[Alan Griffin btw now plays for PEJr.‘s Newfoundland Growlers….]

I think we should all press pause on our collective coaching search anxiety for one minute and appreciate the fact that:
1. Syracuse lost in Greensboro, again. 2. On a buzzer beater. 3. Will not make the postseason. 4. And Boeheim may finally be forced out of the door.

Autry immediately announced as his replacement, so no competition for us in the coaching world.

Autry immediately announced as his replacement, so no competition for us in the coaching world. Georgetown's biggest competition will be Georgetown

As the NCAA Tournament rages on, let’s not forget these miserable seasons from major conference schools. Congratulations, Louisville, you outlasted Cal and narrowly win the prize for worst major conference team for 2022-23! L'ville and Cal have to be up there with the worst major conference seasons of all-time. As for Georgetown, we appropriately overtake South Carolina late to capture the Bottom 10 bronze medal.
Bottom 10 in NET rankings from Power Six Conferences, with final result and head coach status:
315. Louisville, 4-28, 2-18 ACC. 1st round ACC Tournament, 80-62 L vs. #162 Boston College. Kenny Payne still head coach (for now), would be his 2nd season. 313. California, 3-29, 2-18 Pac-12. 1st round Pac-12 Tournament, 69-52 L vs. #69 Washington State. Mark Fox fired after 4 seasons. 243. Georgetown, 7-25, 2-18 Big East. 1st round Big East Tournament, 80-48 L vs. #80 Villanova. Patrick Ewing fired after 6 seasons. 234. South Carolina, 11-21, 4-14 SEC. 1st round SEC Tournament, 67-31 L vs. #131 Ole Miss. Lamont Harris still head coach, would be his 2nd season. 222. Oregon State, 10-21, 5-15 Pac-12. 1st round Pac-12 Tournament, 63-57 L to #66 Arizona State. Wayne Tinkle still head coach, would be his 9th season. 221. Florida State, 9-23, 7-13 ACC, 1st round ACC Tournament, 61-60 L to #179 Georgia Tech. Leonard Hamilton still head coach, would be his 22nd season. 220. Minnesota, 9-22, 2-17 Big Ten. 2nd round Big Ten Tournament, 70-54 L to #26 Maryland. Ben Johnson still head coach, would be his 3rd season. 186. Notre Dame, 11-21, 3-17 ACC. 1st round ACC Tournament, 67-64 L to #76 Virginia Tech. Mike Brey resigned after 23 seasons. 179. Georgia Tech 13-18, 6-14 ACC. 2nd round ACC Tournament, 89-81 L to #67 Pittsburgh. Josh Pastner fired March 10 after 7 seasons. Damon Stoudamire named head coach March 13. 168. Boston College 16-17, 9-11 ACC. 2nd round ACC Tournament, 85-61 L to #46 North Carolina. Earl Grant still head coach, would be 3rd season.
#163 DePaul stays out of the Bottom 10 by virtue of its opening round 66-65 upset of #77 NIT-bound Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament. They get to defer discussion on Tony Stubblefield’s status until next season, which will be his 3rd.
Others to keep an eye on for next season: #152 Georgia, #151 LSU, #131 Butler, #126 Syracuse, #122 Washington, #98 St. John’s, #97 Stanford
Also, I can’t help but laugh at how far the ACC has fallen… by far the biggest representation here with 5 teams in the Bottom 10 (and that doesn’t include Syracuse).
Will be interesting to keep an eye on the Cal and ND searches, as well as the situation at Louisville.
