Having watched the game on my phone, I would have to watch it again on the Big screen to make a true assessment. From what I saw we actually did a pretty good job defending their potent offense (that when it goes off can score in the 85-95 range). We held their two star guards in check Boie and Berry but the inconsistent Audige was hot from 3 that nights and we also let Beran go off. The problem was more our offense that just didn’t score enough. Part of the problem may be because both Primo and Heath are ball dominant and dribble alot. If both waste clock dribbling then that leaves little time to get it into Wahab or to tertiary weapons like Akok and Mozone. This is why I wanted Heath on the 2nd unit and not starting with Primo. I think with two ball dominant guards it also takes Murray out of his facilitating role. If you look at NW, you have to respect their 3, they pump fake drive drawing help defenders then kick it out and swing it to the open man. Basically what Villanova does but not as good. That’s really what our halfcourt offense needs to do but you need at least 4 legit 3pt shooters do to that and Primo isn’t a great 3 pt shooter. You have to attack off then kick out and swing instead of dribbling 5 times and then swinging it around the perimeter. The other issue was rebounding. We got destroyed on the boards and let the 7-0 foot oaf Nicholson run wild. We didn’t put in the right match ups on Nicholson and didn’t attack him to get him in foul trouble and he just overpowered us. Honestly we still could have beaten them even with Murray’s really bad Game if we had taken care of Nicholson. It was a garbage performance for us so just have to burn it and move on to the next game. Northwestern under Chris Collns does not have a "potent offense". Prior to playing the Hoyas, NW scored 63 against Northern Illinois. Under Collins, NW has averaged the following PPG: 2013-2014: 59.5 2014-2015: 63.5 2015-2016: 72.0 2016-2017: 71.1 2017-2018: 68.8 2018-2019: 65.9 2019-2020: 64.9 2020-2021: 70.3 2021-2022: 73.0 www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/northwestern/To try to sugarcoat the Hoyas performance by saying Northwestern is some sort of high-powered offense is just false.

Yep. This is their offense ranking on KenPom: 2013-2014: 288 2014-2015: 100 2015-2016: 71 2016-2017: 59 2017-2018: 96 2018-2019: 204 2019-2020: 131 2020-2021: 132 2021-2022: 101 And they are 94th after 3 games this year. Northwestern is not an offensive powerhouse (or a powerhouse in much of anything). We are just worse.

Just trying to keep things straight... In all seriousness, what stats or parameters would you like to use to illustrate that NW is a "potent offense"?

NU scored 1.11 PPP which, by Pat Ewing standards is pretty good defense, but by normal standards is quite bad.

Does it matter how good NW is from deep? We did not defend well and have not for years. It was apparent ahead of time that NW would present a challenge because they are as big as the Hoyas at every position.
Hoyas are not yet proving to be a good perimeter shooting team. Ewing's greatest success came with a team of Pickett, Carey, Bile and Blair, each of whom could hit the 3 at a good rate. Do not yet have that this year. We have Primo, who is not a good shooter from distance, Murray who was decent but not good last year and absolutely horrible against NW, Mozone, who is reputed to be a good shooter but has been inconsistent so far and now Heath who may be the best of the bunch. The fact that Bristol and Anglin are supposed to be strong perimeter shooters means little, as Ewing is going with a 6-7 man rotation.
I believe in the talent on this team. I believe that they have the skill and athleticism to be good on offense and decent on defense. However, at this point, the coach has not figured out how to use the combinations on the floor to their maximum effectiveness. We have Heath, Murray and Primo at the guard spots and if any of them start dominating the ball rather than distributing the ball, he should sit and calm the hell down. We have players who can sub in for Murray to give him a rest or to reset his attitude when he gets down for missing a shot or making a bad play. Ditto for Primo when the TOs are unforced.
Wahab can do some things well, but chasing his man around the perimeter is not one of them. If the opponent has a mobile big who can hit the perimeter shot, then Wahab may have to sit more. Give Ryan a chance and keep Akok at the 4. Maybe switch to a different defense from the preferred man. Riley plays hard, rebounds very well for his size and has an incredible motor. Play him coach. Ditto for Bristol. Why advertise the deep talent pool and then use only 6-7 players for meaningful minutes while getting blown out in the second half by a mediocre team from the Big 10.
Let's end the star system please. Murray and Primo need and should be given rest during the games. Of course no one wants to come out and I have no idea what promises may have been made during recruitment, but if they are not performing and if they are making careless TOs they should be given the same treatment as every other player. Not to punish, but to settle them down.
I hate to see a season going to hell this early, particularly because unlike prior years I can actually see the talent on this team and believe there is a legitimate role on the floor for at least 9-10 of these kids now.

You don't need stats to know our defense was awful vs. NW. It was obvious that we were allowing a debilitating number of open 3s and offensive rebounds. Then as the second half progressed, we were even allowing easy lanes to the basket for their guards. After some decent small ball defense at times in the first half, everything fell apart completely in the second half.
there is something deeply flawed about the way our help defender comes off the corner shooter to pick up the rolling big man, then failing to recover to the corner in time to contest the open 3. This sequence happens on pretty much every pick/roll the opponent runs. We respond the same way defensively, and the end result is almost always an open 3.
This has been happening for years when we have a traditional center on the court, yet there has not been any meaningful adjustment.
our "switch everything" small ball D (with Akok at center and wahab on the bench) does seem to have some potential. But this lineup gets killed on the boards. Even with the rebounding issue - improving our rebounding would seem to be more likely than fixing the fundamentally flawed pick/roll D high hedge D we play with Wahab on the floor. We probably need to try to play Akok at the 5 as much as we can against most matchups

I’ve changed my mind and will not give out the equations since it will impact the prediction game, “PR” Which I’m two time champion of (or is it three time champion?) And I don’t believe you or Hoyaboya has ever been Prediction Champion. Is that correct?

Then big oafs like Nicholson destroy us inside.

That was a *real* problem in the second half. Right after Murray missed a shot, he would be slow getting back and his guy would blow right by him for a score.

It has to be Bradley or even D'Ante. Their role will be to play D and rebound. If we really get carried away and try to run something they can set a screen and role to the basket. We have plenty of fire power where their limited offensive skill shouldn't be a problem.

Coast2Coast took over when BuffaloHoya semiretired from HT. Then, in 2013, after C2C announced he was stepping aside, I kept it going. I don’t remember the exact dates and I’ve been having problems with the “Search” feature, but I think it’s been going on for a couple of decades. How time flies…

I don't follow. Kentucky went winless in the SEC and also employs Ron Thompson? You don’t follow. Enough said! 🤣 Yes, yes. The laughter should be directed at me- as you compare GU's basketball program to Kentucky's. Bullseye. lmao.
