To me, Georgetown gray is much more about the legacy of Pat Ewing and John Thompson than those traitors who took up arms against the U.S. 150 years ago. As repulsive as the confederacy was, it doesn’t hold a monopoly on a color. If Georgetown wants, it can reimagine the symbolism, but I’d be furious if it considered abandoning the tradition.

I associate Big John with kente cloth. The Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas didn’t win any championships in the 90s, but they may have had one of the most influential teams in college basketball history. The Hoyas were next in line with the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels and the Fab 5. Although those teams had more success on the court than Georgetown, no team represented African heritage better than the Hoyas. In the Allen Iverson era of Georgetown, the team wore kente cloth on the sides of their jerseys. Looking back on it the decision to wear the kente it was daring, but it is something that will always set John Thompson away from other African-American coaches in all sports. Let’s take a look at why it was so significant that the Hoyas wore the Kente Cloth. www.captaingambling.com/thesportsfanjournal/sports/basketball/black-history-month-remember-georgetown-hoyas-wore-kente-cloth/

Reunification and reconciliation were the reasons for choosing blue and gray, but once that choice was made, blue and gray became “Georgetown colors.” When we wear the gray uniforms, we are not wearing confederate uniforms, and frankly, the suggestion that—150 years after their defeat—the rebels have a monopoly on the entire color gray is absurd.
There are lots of actually-racist things to address in this country. Gray sports uniforms are not among them. The Hoyas aren’t wearing a uniform inspired by Lee’s battle flag or anything like that.

That's almosymt exactly MGEN Singh's reasoning for retaining the patch: Retired Maj. Gen. Linda L. Singh is the former adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard — the first African American and the first woman to head the Guard — which includes 29th Infantry Division units. She says the 29th patch doesn’t belong in the same category as the Confederate flag or monuments. That’s because, she says, it includes the color gray not for its own sake, but in symbolic juxtaposition with the blue. “I definitely understand the angst in and around the meaning of different logos, patches, and names,” Singh said. “But the 29th logo is different; it has always been about the power of bringing together the North and the South. It’s a symbol of unity, one of the highest American values. To me, it’s exactly the kind of insignia we should be lifting up right now.” My second year in the Sinai the US Battalion was the 175th Infantry Battalion of the MDARNG. It was, in fact, the original 1st Maryland of the CSA. In some ways 29th Infantry Division patch is ironic as MD Guard fought for South in Civil War, so it really should be grey and grey. I predict that the renaming commission retains the 28th Division patch.

Relatedly, our Foggy Bottomed neighbors just announced they will be getting rid of the "Colonials" moniker. gwtoday.gwu.edu/gw-discontinue-use-colonials-monikerPresume they will look for some sterile, inoffensive replacement. Unfortunately, Commanders is already taken...

I always thought the Colonials nickname was one of the best things going for GWU. The A-10 in the mid-2000s (I think conference realignment has changed this a bit) had such a great mix of nicknames. Colonials, Minutemen, Musketeers, Billikens, Spiders, Explorers.

Nope - "spiders" triggers those with arachnophobia so it has to go.

GW should go with GW Generals.
Alliteration and an allusion to the old Washington Generals, perennial losers to the Globetrotters.
My old Lutheran high school in Hong Kong changed its name from Crusaders to Dragons in 2012.

Can't do Generals - glorification of the military-industrial complex is just as problematic as glorification of White settler colonialism. Just call them the Hippos and be done with it.

Quick take: According to the GW Hatchet, a trademark issue with hippo likely precludes it. Quicker take from the Internet: That won't fly with women's teams. Maybe they can borrow one of the six finalists for St. John's embarrassing mascot. (Red Tuxedo Man, we hardly knew ye.)

Fair point about the women's teams tho. Fine, River Horses it is

And Admirals for that matter! 😁 military-history.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_female_United_States_Army_generals#U.S._Army_generalsWhy not Snakeheads, given the infestation in the Potomac River?

Generals won't fly due to perceived endorsement of militarism, not any gender thing. My friend who was a rower for the Buff & Blue predicts that George Washington himself will be dropped within the decade. Can't go back to Columbian College, though... My suggestion, combining ease of transition and multiple other things besides: The George Washington Carver University Fightin' Peanuts
