You need an elite recruiter and then an elite defensive guru (Pack line or No Middle savant) And then you have to let go of Orr and bring in an offensive wiz. So get everyone else to do the HC’s job but pay said HC $4mm a year. Seems logical by the school. It's not logical but it's necessary because the HC has demonstrated he can't do the job.

Beilein isn’t a good example especially on the offensive side of the ball, he was running his offense long before he got to Michigan Point is it’s pretty common for head coaches to have assistants that specialize in certain areas. Not arguing the relative merits of Ewing vs Beilein. Some coaches even have the assistants decide rotations for them. Not comparing with just pointing out that the offense was Beilein’s baby.. Most HC’s run at least one side of the ball

Beilein at Michigan had the exact same set up - one great recruiter, one great defensive minded assistant coach, and one guy that worked mostly with guards. It’s more common than you think and isn’t a poor reflection on the HC. The CEO of a company doesn’t have to be the CFO, GC and COO all at the same time. Beilein isn’t a good example especially on the offensive side of the ball, he was running his offense long before he got to Michigan Beilein is a perfect example of an older coach that did things his own way and then swallowed his pride. He was getting desperate on the defensive side, playing a lot of 1-3-1, before he brought in Yaklich to handle that side of the ball. It was almost instantly solved. If we want to stay on the Michigan train, Juwan Howard is probably the closest parallel to Ewing in terms of history and past coaching experience. His staff --- Martelli runs the practices and probably most of the day to day, Eisley runs the offense, Saadi Washington runs the defense. Juwan is quite literally the CEO. Hell, their season turned around when he was suspended.

Hell, their season turned around when he was suspended. My point still remains that Beilein ran the offense when he coached, he didn't delegate all the coaching duties... I've praised Michigan in the past for surrounding an inexperienced Howard with a very good group of well connected coaches. I hope we as Gtown fans find out what the roles of Coach Ewings assistants will be beyond recruiting

Agree to that last part that it’s a wait and see. My biggest concern is that Ewing won’t look in the mirror and see his faults (defensive gameplan, execution) and will instead attribute this season to simply not having the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s.
If he puts together a staff that goes and gets talent to mask the coaching, then sure we’re going to be better. But my hope is that last assistant spot is a complete delegation to someone that’s going to coach the defensive side of the ball.

The answer is in his quote about the Nickleberry why he hired Nickleberry

A four year college coaching veteran, Straughn (32), has spent the last three years at St. Joseph's University. The season before that he was also an assistant, this time with Loyola (MD).

And how on brand for Georgetown to spell his name wrong (twice!) in the announcement Yes, that is awful. Does anyone proof these documents? It's not like we release a lot. Awful.

Guy won at a variety of schools before Michigan. 2 Final Fours. 750+ wins. Beilein was / is a great coach. Should be in the Hall of Fame.

I remember when Street & Smith's magazine used to be a basketball junkie thing. Prior to Esherick's last season, their rating of BE coaches had Esh tied with Beilein for 4th. Just odd how things work out.
