Well, here we are: tournament time.
I admit to being disproportionately bummed the Hoyas couldn't post one final clean sheet against Butler and finish the regular season unscored upon. It's dumb, because it's not like they give you any bigger trophy for that, and I doubt the seeding committee looks at a 2-2 draw any different than 0-0. But it would've made for a real fun story! And narrative is really why we love sports, after all.
Ah well. Bigger fish to fry now.
Speaking of trophies... Julia Leas was the only unanimous selection among any of the Big East annual awards - including the first, second, and all-freshman teams. That's wild. This is someone pressed into playing out of position!! Talk about narrative... the unquestioned conference player of the year, and someone who should be a Hermann Trophy finalist. She'd never win it - no non-offensive player will - but she deserves a free trip to KCMO.
The other storyline that's top of mine...Henley Tippins making the all-freshman team despite being injured most of the year. Oh what might have been... at least we hear, pee John Fanta, that Cyanne has resumed training and could be back on the pitch soon.
Quite a juxtaposition - not many blowouts, a lot of 1-0 results against inferior competition...and yet at the end of it all, a one-loss regular season across conference and non, and only a pair of draws short of a flawless BIG EAST campaign. Is there such a thing as subdued domination?
One feels that the Hoyas could be on the cusp of another step as a program, up to the level of true national championship contenders. That would be a far more meaningful achievement than shutting out the entire conference.

1-0 at the half, Hoyas controlling possession for the most part. Creighton unlucky on a shot off the post.

1-0 final, some nervy minutes as Creighton pressed the attack for most of the 2nd half. Augur made some sensational saves to keep the shutout.

It says something that, per someone following them since 2012, this was Creighton's best effort in the last decade at least...and it still ended as a 1-0 Hoyas win.
8-4-8 is also just an asinine record. Bring back regular season OT, please.

Hoyas lucky to advance, but a W is a W! Bluejays had 2 shots off the post and some other good shots that required superb saves from Augur. Our defense was stout throughout the match, but our midfield broke down in the 2nd half with Creighton pressing. On to the championship match!

Our defense was stout throughout the match, but our midfield broke down in the 2nd half with Creighton pressing. On to the championship match! Considering the Bluejays went to a 2 back in the second half and we kept long balling for a possible breakaway to Gia or Natalie, it is not surprising that our midfield looked a bit weaker than normal. Their adjustment led to ours and we went away from what we do best---control.

Get it done ladies. Bring home the title. Hope there has been a lot of PK work this week--- a whole new dimension to Big East soccer this year.
