Score not indicative of the ball control and pressing offense that we haven't seen in some time from Hoyas WSOC. However, much may be due to the level of talent we played in game 2, so too much cannot be concluded from today. I was taken with the level of talent displayed up front with the two new forwards outshining the veteran Vicari but creating a juggernaut attacking line. Depth at midfield is solid and Julie Leas as defensive anchor helps making our new aggressive frosh goalie looking good. Means, Manning, Tippins, and Davis look to this viewer as tons of young talent. I know coach was disappointed with aspects of the game, but my take away from the first two games is we are playing an inordinate amount of freshmen in critical positions and they are good--very good, matter of fact. The offensive pressing keeping the ball in the UMass defensive end was great, but in the best of situations can give rise to downfield breakaways of which there were a couple. This appears to me one of the best balanced teams in the eight plus years I have been following. Again, I choose not to take away a lot measuring the quality of the opposition, but they also stepped up and were never behind, nor outplayed, by PSU on their home turf the other night. Early in the season and everything is a teaching moment, but I look for Mr. Nolan to sleep better this year than last. We shall see, as he always prepares a tough preseason schedule to test his troops. Yeah, I mean, let's start by level-setting: while UMass-Lowell is no one's idea of a world-beater, they were picked ahead of this season to finish first in the America East (by a single point, granted, over defending champ Vermont). That Vermont team lost 2-0 in the opening round of the NCAAs... certainly more respectable than the 6-0 pasting the Hoyas doled out to NEC champ Central Connecticut State (who is, incidentally, currently tied in the 2nd half with perennial Big East cellar dweller Seton Hall). So the Textilers (I don't know anything else about Lowell... but that's also a storied soccer name in some parts! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tekstilshchik) aren't total chopped liver here. Anyway, while the statline and most of the run of play was very one-sided, Davey's not wrong that the opponent managed to generate a few nervy moments, including some caused by goalkeeper/backline lack of sync. A better team might've converted one or more of those, where this crew could not take advantage. Hopefully those wrinkles will get ironed out with time... and it does help explain and justify why Julia Leas is basically anchored to the back at the moment. I would love to have her further up the field, but as it stands, the combination of her and Alcantara there really helps solidify the defense. Attack-wise, I also get where Dave is coming from. The three goals were each the result of a River Hawk misplay: Goal 1: The aforementioned Tippins body block of a goalie clearance that bounced into the back of the net Goal 2: A Tatum Lenain in-swinger that the goalie misjudged... and also was maybe kinda sorta interfered with by a Georgetown attacker at the near post - but hey, both players have a right to the ball! And so it went uncalled despite Textiler protests Goal 3: Bad turnover in the home half of the middle third leads to Tippins taking it to house and converting it. God she's got a nose for the ball and the goal Beyond that, there were a lot of shots and a healthy number of set pieces created, but you'd have liked to see some more dangerous moments... especially since for parts of the first half, the Textile defense looked completely demoralized. I cannot remember ever seeing a goalkeeper booting the ball out over her own back line for a corner because she couldn't find an outlet and didn't want to risk getting dispossessed or blocked (again!) by a pressuring forward. That was bordering on laugher territory, but it didn't play out that way, and the visiting side can head home beaten (and soggy) but unbowed.

UML actually haven’t been the Textilers for decades, they’ve been Riverhawks since 1994. www.uml.edu/falcons/mascot.aspxThey do have a Hermann Trophy watch list player so there’s that.

Virginia 1-0. I could only watch the second half, but looked like Virginia controlled the run of play in the midfield for the most part. Hoyas had quite a few strong counters but could never connect to score. Virginia's goal was a precise inball from the side that met a crossing forward who had slipped coverage and one-touched it in. Martin didn't have much of a chance. This is a game that will serve them well going forward.

Highly advanced analysis: UVA is very good. Cosign. And yet the game was still within reach of a result for the home team.

Can anyone out there help with WSOC streaming, or at least can it be reported to staff. This year I have had to subscibe to Big10 network to get PSU game, FloFC for most, but not all of our games, and now today ACCNExtra thru ESPN to get the NC State game.
Watching women's soccer is getting to be a bit much, as much as I enjoy it. Is there any way G'town admin can get us ONE channel to subscribe to for the games? Any help would be appreciated.

Short answer: Not really, because this is a college sports-wide problem. The home team generally has exclusive broadcast rights, unless it agrees to allow additional broadcasts and its contract with the home broadcaster permits it. Here we can recall the humorous outrage from Lafayette fans when the Lafayette Football Network was not allowed to broadcast their game on the MSF because the rights belonged to something called Verizon FiOS1. Now, as a general rule, the whole conference signs with one provider, so you're good to go for in-conference with just one subscription. But non-conference? Good luck... especially when we're talking about sports other than football.

With my frustration and eighth year into this streaming I suspected this was the case but hoping for better. The ladies played quite well, and even though they are leaving themselves open to counters with breakaways, there offensive pressing and keeping the ball in our opponents end is much more fun to watch than the bunkering in style. I think this may be the best frontline we have had in the last eight years when you consider Means and Tippins are making you look for Gia. Three good ones; two freshmen. Should only get better.

Understand the drop in rankings, and it makes sense that it’s taking a little while for this team to round into its full potential, especially with what needed to be replaced from last year (two pros on the defense, among others).
I agree with others—based on the one game that I saw in its entirety (UVa), this is a much more fun style to watch with the entire team pressing forward. Hoping the shot advantage starts to turn into a similar goal advantage moving forward. This early-season schedule is certainly a great proving ground!
