It is amazing that Matt's 3:55 mile time is only the 9th fastest. The times are out-of-sight this year. Shoes anybody?!

When I was in college (insert "I'm old" joke), the NCAA record was Tony Waldrop's 3:55.0 from 1974 (Nate Brannen ran 3:55.11 while I was in my fifth year/getting my master's and sometimes had his time also mentioned as a record, allowing for the hand/FAT conversion). So yeah, Nevada, I'm 100% with you on the skyrocketing times. All consideration of tracks/shoes aside, at least it's a heck of a lot of fun to watch!

It's a very easy to say the faster times are because of the shoes but its much more than that.
In fact it is a combination of factors including older collegiate athletes, better training, better nutrition, better coaching and the internet which allows everyone to see what the successful athletes are doing.
When Silver Hoya and I were in college, most athletes graduated at 21. Now they are just getting started.

The final national rankings before the NCAA indoor meet have the men up four places to #68 (all due to Matt's mile time). The women were not ranked (no points).
