Yes it was a nice crowd and yes finishing remains a problem but it seems to be more in the buildup. Not enough shots on next while looking for the perfect connection at times.
Also, interesting that Cyanne is listed as ‘D’ when she’s clearly ‘F’ (in true form the GUHoyas.com roster has her listed that way).

Solid 1-0 win over Butler on a header by Cummings off a Fernandez-Powell corner kick under 2 minutes in the second half.

Well, that's soccer for you. This one felt like it was headed for another OT and potentially another dreaded draw...but Dave Nolan's teams have often been toward the very top of the national rankings in number of corners generated, and so that is a weapon that perennially remains in the quiver - not high-percentage, but better odds than trying to break down the door against turtling teams straight up.
Not that Butler was turtling - give them credit, as usual, for playing a bruising brand of soccer that is at once physical and not dirty, built on big and strong players who want to possess and square up. The Hoyas speed made them uncomfortable in long stretches, particularly in the second half, but the Bulldogs held out...until they didn't.
Xavier and Butler won't drop too many points the rest of the season, I don't think. Let's hope the Hoyas can build on this to maximize their own returns.

Today's game versus St. Johns absolutely critical for a win. Then our schedule lightens as we wait for the Butler vs. Xavier matchup on Oct 21. We must not suffer a tie today as we look forward.

Dominant second half and a 1-0 win on a Vicari one timer in the box after a deflection on a corner kick.
Augur with 3 great saves.

Absolutely critical win and the Hoyas stepped up big time in foul weather. The rest of our schedule is not a cakewalk but is pretty smooth. We now need a hiccup from Xavier even if we win out.

Xavier is still in the driver's seat after a 3-1 home win over Marquette. They have only dropped 3 points so far - the loss to the Hoyas - while Georgetown has dropped 4 from their two draws. Really hoping that Butler can manage a result at Xavier.
That'll be moot, of course, if the Hoyas don't continue earning all the points they can. A roadtrip to Milwaukee awaits - hopefully the Golden Eagles will be too embarrassed to attempt a turtle imitation on their home turf.

Russky, there is a lot of soccer to be played, but the G'town and Xavier situation raises a very good question about scoring (value of tie and win). I feel that two ties are not as bad as a loss, especially a head to head loss. Not that anyone would change anything but it seems with no losses on the entire season and two ties in league and a win over Xavier on their turf the scoring for standings should reflect that. This is probably a very unique situation but it does raise the question. I have always reflected on a tie as a half loss/half win, so in my world maybe 4 points for a win and two for a tie. Or does that raise other problems that I am not seeing?
Go Butler Bulldogs, Go Hoyas.

Or does that raise other problems that I am not seeing? Go Butler Bulldogs, Go Hoyas. The standard soccer point convention of three points for a win and only one for a draw comes from the desire to incentivize offense and reduce the temptation for inferior teams to just totally take the air out of the ball. As it is, you see lots of teams turtling, parking the bus, whatever you want to call that brand of anti-football - imagine how much more of that there would be if a draw was worth half of a win, instead of just a third of one.

Certainly appreciate your point and the "why" to promote the game toward offense. But then realize, that a tie is 2/3 a loss if 1/3 a win. Not sure it is right, but people a lot smarter than me in this great game know a lot more than me. Maybe, this particular situation with Xavier/Gtown magnifies one example where the rule does not play out right.

Is a team that’s 0-0-20 any good? They are undefeated, but winless. You need to win games, I believe.
