Buf, feel free to unleash the rest of your ideas, even if they're not tied in to the basketball related renovation you propose.
I agree that Yates might actually be a good spot for a basketball arena. Theres a ton of stuff on the lower level there... The whole workout area, a number of basketball courts, the indoor track, and the tennis courts. If they cleared all that junk out and just put one basketball court in the middle, there'd still be room for a hell of a lot of seats around it. I don't know how they'd structure the seating but with a bit of remodeling it really seems possible. The downside would be that it would be far from the state of the art facility I/We have been hoping for... It'd be somewhat of a patchwork type design I imagine. But I think it could work really well for us, because it might make for an intimidating setting. 8,000 seats or so, dug down, practically sitting on top of the court? Might work well.
And as mentioned, they could always just relocate the treadmills, weight machines, etc. to a temporary location until they renovated the current mcdonough. It would be less than ideal, but it would be ok as a temporary solution. And there are always the outdoor basketball and tennis courts near mcdonough for those diehards who want to play.
I dunno... its a good thought at the very least.
