Figured we could talk about something Georgetown related besides the usual topics of "next year", "REBOUND!", 9797 problems and an Orange ain't one, etc. Who do you think was the best G-town team that didn't make it to the Final Four. I think the 88-89 team with Smitty and Mourning as a freshmen. That team was good. Smitty, Turner, Bryant, Tillmon, a young Mourning, a raw Mutombo, Jaren Jackson, the reliable Winston. Although it was before my time, I often hear the 1979-1980 team that lost to Iowa in the elite 8 was pretty good too. What are you thoughts?

I thought the ‘96 team was going to win it all. ☹️

1989
Right up until Phil Henderson crammed in Alonzo’s face and changed everything.

I thought the ‘96 team was going to win it all. ☹️ The few days stretch that included wins over Memphis State and UConn gave reason to believe. As good as we’ve looked for a period that I’ve seen (fan since mid/late 80s). hm

In a hypothetical 7 game series of all those mentioned I am taking 95-96. They had the highest ceiling for sure.

Tough to argue against 95-96.
I’ll throw the 07-08 team into the mix. Jeff Green was gone but they still went 15-3, won the BE regular season but came up just short in the BE tourney final to Pitt. Of course we all know what happened in the second round of the the ncaa tourney but that team was primed for a deep run again.
Hibbert, Wallace, Ewing Jr, Sapp, Summers, Wright, Freeman, Macklin, Rivers

The 05-06 vs 07-08 is a good matchup. I'd take 05-06.
Hibbert, Green, Wallace, Sapp, Cook, Owens, Bowman. Upset #1 Duke that year. Went to the Sweet Sixteen and went toe to toe with eventual champ Florida.

But it’s certainly damn close.

Way too big & composed. It's amazing how - during that stretch & up to Davidson - you always thought we'd end up finding a way to win every game. So mentally tough in big spots.

No. They said the same thing with the 05-06 team when they played Ohio St. in the tournament. Same against #1 Duke that year. The BET championship game against PIT in 08. PIT out-toughed them.

No mention of Reggie and the Miracles? Nah, they were Reggie and the Miracles and not the Temptations for a reason. Maximized their capabilities and overachieved to an extent. Good team, one of my favorite Hoya teams, especially on the defensive end. The tenacity and scrappiness in which they played full-court on the defensive end is Hoya basketball at its finest.

What are you thoughts? 1979-80 had senior leadership in Duran and Shelton going for it, which meant a lot more back then, and the element of surprise, since no one other than Dick Enberg saw us coming.

1. 1988-89: Until the Princeton game, that is, which took the air out of tires which were flat by the Duke game. 2. 1979-80: Remember, they were only one basket short. 3. 1986-87: Playing PC (and Pitino) three times in three weeks was just too much. 4. 1995-96: If they won the Big East, they would have never seen UMass. 5. 2005-06: The best team not to get to the Final 8. Florida's toughest game of the tournament.

That team was really rolling in January/ February and completely dominated the 89 BET. But we completely lost our mojo v Princeton in Providence.

1. 1988-89 Hoyas -Best team in college basketball from November through the first week of March in 1989. 2. 1979-80 Hoyas- Most younger Hoya fans have no idea how good this team was. Heartbreaking loss to Iowa. 3. 1986-87 Hoyas- Possibly John Thompson's best coaching job ever? 4. 2007-08 Hoyas- This team was 28-5 before the devastating 2nd half collapse to Davidson. 5. Tie 1989-90 & 1995-96 Hoyas- Always thought both teams underachieved based off of overall talent on the roster.
