If Roy was the supposed bad guy here, why isn't basketball being docked schollies? Can the NCAA get at Roy over at UNC?
Am I the only one who finds disturbing the recent trend of schools investigating themselves and putting themselves on probation or assessing other penalties before the NCAA has a chance to act? And why does the NCAA allow this pre-emptive bulls--t? What's to say Coach X illegally recruits Player A and Player B, who happens to be a superstar. Then a few years down the road the school says "Oh Coach X messed up a bit with Player A, we'll punish ourselves" and they cover up Player B? If the NCAA generally lets these internal investigations stand in place of their own, who'd ever find out about B?

Question is whether Roy was a Jet or a Shark.

Question is whether Roy was a Jet or a Shark. Is Bonnie Bernstein asking the question? If so, I don't think Roy gives a s% if he's a Jet all the way. Yes, quoting musicals on a basketball talk board. I expect the Admins will ban me shortly. And harumph, Buff. Starting to be a trend.

Yeah, I don't like the "self-punishment" thing either...the schools are smart enough to impose this stuff on themselves because, in the event the NCAA finds out without a self report by the school, they will come down harder on the school. It's really just an attempt to mitigate the damage from a violation, and isn't really motivated by any sincerity or atonement by the school. Like you said, the schools just want to beat the NCAA to the punch because they're afraid the hammer will get dropped on them if they don't.
As for the NCAA, I assume they permit this stuff based on a "something is better than nothing" type of mentality. For the NCAA, it is better to ensure that most violations get punished at some level (even if a lighter self-reported level) than having the potential of violations slipping through the cracks, as would be the case if the school did not self-report and the NCAA failed to learn of the violation. So, I suppose it casts a wider net over the totality of violations occuring, but at the same time it does take the "sting" out of the violations themselves....Interesting give and take, really.

And I thought this thread would be about Roy Hibbert. Bubble, don't you know there is only one Roy in Hoyaland?

Yeah I did too. I saw the thread and thought we would be discussing Roy starting again. Although I'm not too surprised to hear that Mr. Williams is a cheater.

Ditto, I thought that someone was going to say that he actually contributed to a game aside from the jump ball. Silly me.

Perhaps we should just start talking about Roy (and possibly Esh and possibly facilities and possibly how we are either clearly back/so under-rated and getting no respect right now).

You want big news about Hibbs? How about Green, Wallace, BB, and all the incoming freshmen too!?
They were all at Wedding Crashers last night. Green isn't as tall as some people have said he's gotten. He still looks to be a good half foot behind Roy. But DAMN Roy looks thicker. Could have been the clothes or something, but dude looked like he'd been workin' out.

And I thought this thread would be about Roy Hibbert. Bubble, don't you know there is only one Roy in Hoyaland? Mea culpa, mea culpa. The missus is a (Tar) Heel, so perhaps my interest was misdirected. But really, is it too much to ask for Roy to wag his finger at people when he swats them? If he got thick, what does he weigh now, 320?

Green isn't as tall as some people have said he's gotten. He still looks to be a good half foot behind Roy. That sounds about right from when I last saw them together. Jeffs around 5 or 6 inches shorter, but I like to write this off to Roy being hugely, massively, enormously colossal rather than Jeff having stopped growing. Roy is a walking mountain. Is there any chance he got bigger from last summer to this summer? I mean, he turned 18 last fall, right? Still young enough to pick up another inch. As for wagging his finger... I can't complain. I think he definitly shows the most emotion on the court of any of our current players. He's more of a fist-pumper than a finger-wagger, and thats fine by me. ;D

rumor was last year that roy was supposed to grow to 7'5" by the time he stops ... there is little chance he is done growing and a couple more are definitely not out of the question seeing as he started college at the ripe old age of 17

All I know is that Green is well above 6'9. Period. "Wedding Crashers?" I was hoping they would check out the "March of the Penguins."

Yeah I did too. I saw the thread and thought we would be discussing Roy starting again. Although I'm not too surprised to hear that Mr. Williams is a cheater. Maybe under the arcane NCAA system he could be cast as a cheater, but do you really think the facts warrant such a label:
"The thing is, Roy Williams is right. Saturday, even Kansas officials said he’s right. This thing has been blown so far out of proportion it would take three flights to get back. Payments? Gifts violations? Corruption? Listen: There were three “boosters,” right? One is a woman who met her husband at Kansas in 1942. They were huge Kansas fans. When her husband died in 1987, she asked if she could give the basketball players little gifts when they graduated — something like a $50 check — because she loved them so much. The school apparently said yes. She’d been giving these little gifts ever since then. The second booster is a successful Kansas supporter who asked Williams if he could give some graduating seniors a small gift to help them get started in life. Williams thought it would be OK as long as it wasn’t too much. Hey, doesn’t every kid get graduation gifts? This was Williams’ mistake. This was against the rules. The last booster, I know. His name is Bernie Morgan. He has been watching Kansas basketball since 1937. He says when Kansas graduated six seniors, he called Williams and said: “That’s such a great achievement. I’d love to give those seniors a little gift.” Williams said: “I don’t know. Call our compliance director.” Bernie says the compliance director told him that after the last university check cleared, he could do whatever he wanted, they were no longer students. “I remember exactly what she said,” Bernie says. “She said, ‘You can give them a million dollars if you want.’ ” He had no interest in giving a million dollars. He wanted to keep the players involved with the school, so he paid the alumni association fee for some of the seniors. He also bought one player some clothes. www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/12151520.htm

Lets get back to Roy Hibbert and not Roy Williams. The success of Hibbert is more important to us than whatever Roy Williams does, especially considering how they just lost like their 7 top scorers.

It reminds me of the NCAA busting Majerus because he had some of his players over for a pizza "dinner". Roy Williams has always had the reputation of a guy who plays by the rules... like Dean, JT2 and JT3... and even Craig. The gifts totalled less than $400 each. It's pretty tough to believe any players were convinced to go to Kansas, instead of say.... Cincinnatti.... because they might get gifts worth as much as $400 if they are able to graduate -- four years later.
