On to the task at hand.
While the Hoyas have 6 full days of rest before heading to Hinkle, Butler has 2 tough games this week: on the road today at Marquette followed by a surging Xavier team at home on Wed. Hopefully both games take a lot out of them before we get to Indy.
Obviously, the health of Mac and Yurt will be key things to watch as the week progresses. From a depth/rest perspective, we likely will need at least one to come back to pull this off.
Aaron Thompson missed the first game but played Wednesday against Nova and looks ready to go.
With the recent stretch as evidence, hoping that Ewing can continue to show multiple looks on defense to keep Butler off guard.
In all honesty, this is a team we should have beat the first time around. A critical missed goaltend late and general failure to avoid overhelping off shooters (i.e. McDermott) cost us at home. We haven't done this much at all in conference road games this season, but we are going to need to come out with a much more physical mentality and exhibit some mental toughness early in the game to set the tone. The rest and opportunity to refocus and prepare should help with this.
We've got another golden opportunity to crash the bubble. If you're heading to Hinkle on Saturday, hit me up.

Marquette handled Butler handily this afternoon. I’m going back to thinking healing thoughts about feet and ankles...

If we are healthy AND we are sharing the ball....its a winnable game. A couple of big Ifs.

This break is probably the best thing for the team given our injuries...but it’s killer for the fans...haha
Ugh I want the guys to be healthy!
I agree with the poster above, when healthy (and we are playing well) - we can play with almost anyone in the country

The shine of Butler's start is definitely wearing off. Hinkle is a tough place to play but agree it's a winnable game. Without Yurt7 and Mac we won't have any expectations. But if they're both available then it will be interesting to see if we can make the appropriate defensive adjustments.

Butler's D is below par. Hopefully Jamarko gets the scouting report this time. They only have 2 shooters. Guard those two outside, take your chances with their point guard shooting it and don't let Golden or Nze get easy looks inside. This should be a W (should have been the first go around too).

At least Pickett’s game cannot get any worse than the last time vs Butler: www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore?gameId=401168304Can it?

It’s time to beat a team above us in the standings. Let’s do it!

A week off against a BUtler team playing two games in the time where the Hoyas play none is an advantage. Having a week off to scout is an advantage. Control the pace and take the game. GOod spot, and is the best road win opportunity spot out of the three newer Big East teams. Hopefully, the Hoyas control the tempo and open this game up.

I do not think it is fair to blame Pickett for the barrage of threes last game against Butler. He helped out when other players were beaten on drives to the basket. If we are not going to help on those plays, we need to sag wayyy off their ball handlers and beg them to fire away. They cannot drive to the rim with impunity. And, to be fair, Butler is going to get some good looks from three. They are a solid team, and every open three for them does not mean that one or more Hoyas somehow screwed up. Good teams get off good shots. Now, Pickett's offense may be another story. I really want him to get some confidence and turn the corner on that end. It was nice to see him make that three against DePaul; we need more of those.

He should've learned to defend the play that happened five straight times. He should've read the scouting report.

I would hope to goodness that every scouting report would tell you, or it should be implicit, that you ALWAYS help on ball penetration. No shooter, even Curry at his hottest, should compel defenders to stand around the perimeter while their teammates get taken to the hoop. It is basic off and to the ball defense. You must contain dribble penetration, and if a defenders has to help, that is on the guy who got beaten, not the player who had to help to prevent a layup. If necessary, hopefully other players rotate and prevent the easy three.

Well, McDermott shoots in the low 40%'s from 3. Now we have had guys who seemed to shoot less than 50% on layups, but an open layup is a little better than an open 3.

I would hope that after the last few games Profhoya can accept the fact that Pickett is killing us and replacing him with Nze would be a huge improvement. But since that can't happen I just have to hope that Pickett has used this week to improve his shooting, his shot selection, his passing, his game awareness, and his defense. His rebounding is fine but if we are to beat Butler, or any of the teams above us, he has to improve that too. Gonna be a dogfight. Need all hands (and feet and ankles) on deck.

Gotta avoid getting behind big early. DePaul down 21-10, SH down 16-0, Butler down 26-11....all recent games with huge first half deficits. Not to mention being down 17 to SJU in the 2nd half.
