Bryce Harper must be kicking himself.

That's nothing compared to what Dodger fans are doing to Dave Roberts.

That's nothing compared to what Dodger fans are doing to Dave Roberts. Yep, this is absolutely correct. I have long (well, for two years anyway) maintained that Roberts blew game 2 of the World Series two years ago by misusing his pitchers. The same occurred last night. Dodgers should have won that game, or, if they had done things correctly, would have certainly given themselves a better chance to win. One of my colleagues in my office thinks Roberts should be fired. I don't see that happening, but maybe it should. Because yesterday was Yom Kippur, I was actually able to watch the entire game. Roberts should have brought Maeda in to start the 7th (and I said this immediately last night; Buehler was done, and Roberts left him in too long, even if the Nats didn't score that inning) and let him go as long as necessary; brought Kolarek in to face Soto; and then gone to Jansen. Jansen might well have blown it anyway, but this would likely have avoided using either Kershaw or Kelly. I about crapped when he brought Kelly in to pitch the ninth given that his last performance was a return of early season Joe Kelly, but even given his solid ninth inning, you can't leave him in for the 10th given how little he had pitched in the last month. Horrible. Tip of the cap to the Nationals, though, for overcoming 3-1 eighth inning leads both last night and in the wild card game.

It is great fun watching the Nationals win after Harper left.
Full disclosure: I like Harper and think he is a good player. However, it is delicious to watch Philadelphia fret while the Nats celebrate.

redemonstrating the time honored principle that great pitching nearly always trumps great hitting The Cards are very, very far from a great hitting team. The Nats are a better offensive team.

How long into the offseason will it be before Kershaw goes to the Astros? Over/under on the number of mph he gains on his FB after having done so? 3?

The Dodgers will only trade him to the Astros if the Astros make them an offer they can't refuse. Rangers are more likely, as he's from Dallas, not Houston. It would be interesting, though, to see Kershaw and Greinke together again.

Seems like, after his most recent postseason performance, that may not be the worst looking option to Kershaw. It's also possible that the Dodgers will want to shake some of it up since they haven't been able to get over the hump.

redemonstrating the time honored principle that great pitching nearly always trumps great hitting If we learned nothing from the Yankees' post-season, pitching and defense will beat hitting. Every. Single. Time. I'm thinking that the Houston bullpen is slightly better than the Washington bullpen. And that the Astros defense is slightly better than the Nats defense. So I'm thinking Houston in six games. And no, I'm not that bitter as a Mets fan. Although it is nice to see the Yankees now in offseason mode.

I think a Kershaw trade is a decent possibility, and perhaps, because the Astros are so good, he would welcome a trade there. Verlander's rejuvenation has been remarkable - although I tend to attribute it more to Kate Upton than the Astros. I would be surprised if Kershaw rediscovers his fast ball, but you never know.

Actually, the Nationals' bullpen this season was historically bad. It had the worst ERA of any playoff team ever under the current format. They really only have two or perhaps three relievers who are even half decent. That's why they used Corbin and Scherzer in relief against the Dodgers.

And as another Mets fan, we get to see if the Nats can do an '86 Red Sox impersonation.

And as another Mets fan, we get to see if the Nats can do an '86 Red Sox impersonation. I told some people before the Series started that this Nats team was reminding me of the Red Sox team that finally broke the jinx when they came back on the Yankees. Sometimes a team gets so hot that they can do no wrong, and that looks like where the Nats currently are. We'll see if they can finish the job. Still ticks me off, though. Damn you, Roberts.
