I honestly don't get the love for Providence. They finished tied for last place last year. Is bringing in a PG really going to fix all that was wrong with Providence on the offensive side of the ball? They had a great defense, but couldn't score to save their lives. They shot 32.6% from 3 257th nationally and 47.5% form 2 275th nationally, and 69.1%from the FT line 235th nationally. They were already 33rd nationally in A/FGM so I don't see better passing making the offense so much better. The real issue is they can't shoot. Reaves is the only one who shot a decent percentage at 38% from 3. I know he missed 9 games during the year, but played in 11/18 BE games. He shot 35% in BE games but on 26% against tier A+B opponents and 14% against tier A opponents. He's a bit streaky. He hit 25% of his 3's in two games where he went 7/9 vs sienna in his debut and 6/8 against Butler late in the year. Explanations. Recency bias. Providence had made it to about five straight NCAA appearances before they floundered last season. This gives the media more trust in them. It makes the job easier for the media too because predicting fortunes for so many teams often comes down to reputation. Over reliance on Pipkens making all the difference. The Providence program must have been going for the hard sell to the media about that guy. Admiration/liking Cooley. Media finds him very charismatic, like being in his presence. If he talks highly of his team prospects they are likely to listen and take all of that into serious consideration. An assumption that every returning player will be better.

Good PG play is a massive need in college basketball. Some teams can get by with average PG play based on their system. Providence isn't one of them. Cooley's system only thrives when out has a really good playmaker. During their five straight years of NCAA tournament appearance they had really really good PG play. Cotton, Dunn, and Cartwright kept Providence winning games. When the Friars Flex offense bogs down, they need a playmaking PG that kept create buckets for their teammates and themselves. They didn't have that last season. Coach Cooley teams are good when they are old and two deep at the PG position. Pipkins has been hurt all summer and is new to Coach Cooley's system, so will see how much he's able to contribute. Otherwise the Friars are deep and experienced at every other position and Cooley's a very good coach... I get that, but like I said they already assisted on most of their baskets as it is and a PG can get you the ball in a good spot, but he can't make that shot for you and Providence struggles to put the ball in the hoop even un-guarded(at the FT line). And Pimpkins 28% from 3 isn't going to help the cause. They struggled so much last season because they couldn't get clean looks. A good PG can open the floor for teammates, create space, collapse the defense by getting into the key, make passes to teammates that don't even realize their open, get easy baskets, etc. I get that Ackinjo & McClung got fans giddy causing short memories, but there was a time before last year when Hoyas new for half a decade what it was like not to have high level PG play and how hard it was to win games....

I think it's a combination of the addition of Pipkins and the health of Reeves has folks optimistic about PC... Also if Emmit Holt is anywhere close to what he was at the end of his Junior year....

Also if Emmit Holt is anywhere close to what he was at the end of his Junior year.... True, had 17 and 11 pts vs. GU... no word re: Holt in that lazy si.com preview... If I'm a Friars fan, I'm looking forward to the season because everyone's back, got Holt back, four starters spent part of the summer with USA Pan Am Games team under Cooley getting extra competition time together, added a scorer and a top 60 frosh, and am cautiously optimistic that everyone improved from last year (just like Hoya fans). I wonder how Friars fans feel about our roster and where we'll finish.

No Collin Gillespie for Nova I watched this game last night, Nova really lacks ballhandlers on this team. It looks like they only have Gillespie Bey & Moore, the rest of the team struggle to put the ball on the floor which means they'll probably be 3pt shot heavy again this season... Moore is going to be a good player in time but I'm not sure he's ready yet...

Robinson-earl is going to be a problem. Might be a one and done though.

It sounds like Jay Wright might have just been mentioning the possibility of a redshirt depending on how the rehab goes, but it doesn't seem like that's the current plan.

They were solid, pretty athletic but not very physical, Nova had a lot of offensive boards but couldn't convert many... As noted in the tweet the Anderson kid looked very good in the 2nd half. The Utomi kid is the real deal from deep, he has Purvis Short type arc on his jumper, so pretty to watch...
