It looks as if Mt. St. Mary's will be the sacrificial lamb for both the XC team and the basketball team. They open the schedule for both teams. The bball team should win easily if the Bahamas trip is any indication. The men's and women's teams are unknowns as far as opening the season, as the Hoyas will probably not have their main runners.

Coach Bonsey said that the men should surprise some teams this year. We have a lot of depth so this may be true. Eight men should be fighting for seven places. I am not sure if all eight have eligibility (redshirt or out of eligibility), but the eight are Josh Bell, Matt Bouthillette, Spencer Brown (his goal is top 70 at NCAA), Rusty Kujdych, Christian Liddell (if he were not sick/injured at the NCAA Regionals, the men would have made the NCAA final last year), Jack Salisbury, Jack Van Scoter, and Nick Wareham. Nick was a senior last year, but he may have eligibility. He is a key for he was the leading XC runner for the Hoyas last year. He and Jack Van Scoter made the NCAA finals as individuals last year and did very well. Those eight do not include Rey Rivera, usually an 800m man, but with good range, who trained in Arizona last year, and I hope will be back this year, and an outstanding class of freshmen. Outside those eight there are another eight, who may have made improvement to challenge. They are Maazin Ahmed, Reilly Bloomer (who is usually good in the early season), Ty Brownlow, Tristan Forsythe, Quinn Nicholson, Eion Nohilly, Price Owens, and Dylan Scarsone. The team vs Mt St Mary will be probably filled with these runners.

The women are a little more difficult to figure out this year. They did not perform well last year, so I hope the new faces (from last year and this year's new recruits) will propel the Hoyas to a better outcome. That said they just finished their XC camp in Virginia. At least two redshirts from last year should be running: Cathilyn McIntosh, our BE 800m champ as a freshmen, who didn't run XC last year, and Katherine Lee, an elite runner, who ran into injuries last year. I hope she is well now. At least, she participated in the camp. She and Cathilyn are in the first row, the first two on the right as you look at this picture: twitter.com/HoyasTrackXC?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Margie Cullen is back from illness, so she should contribute. Maddy Perez is also in the picture (standing to the extreme right); I had thought she was out of eligibility, so if she has XC eligibility, that is so much the better. Sami Corman did well in the postseason as an U20 runner. Our transfers, from Princeton and Colorado, Allie Fordyce and Baylee Jones, should contribute and should be in the top seven. It should be an interesting season for the women.

Today is the regional coaches rankings:
Women Top 10 in the Middle Atlantic Region:
RANK TEAM CONFERENCE 2018 FINAL 1 penn-state PENN STATE Big Ten 3 2 princeton PRINCETON Ivy League 2 3 penn PENN Ivy League 5 4 villanova VILLANOVA Big East 1 5 west-virginia WEST VIRGINIA Big 12 6 6 temple TEMPLE American 4 7 georgetown GEORGETOWN Big East 7 8 la-salle LA SALLE Atlantic 10 11 9 george-washington GEORGE WASHINGTON Atlantic 10 14 10 pittsburgh PITTSBURGH ACC 9
I think the women can be better than #7 in the region. Again, they should surprise.

The top 10 regional for the men:
RANK TEAM CONFERENCE 2018 FINAL 1 princeton PRINCETON Ivy League 1 2 villanova VILLANOVA Big East 2 3 georgetown GEORGETOWN Big East 3 4 penn PENN Ivy League 4 5 temple TEMPLE American 6 6 penn-state PENN STATE Big Ten 5 7 la-salle LA SALLE Atlantic 10 7 8 navy NAVY Patriot 8 9 pittsburgh PITTSBURGH ACC 9 10 saint-josephs SAINT JOSEPH'S Atlantic 10 10
#3 does not cut it as the Hoyas have to finish 2nd in the Regional meet to make the NCAA. Princeton won the region last year and return all seven from that team. Villanova, whom the Hoyas defeated at BE, finished 2nd in the region and return six of the seven runners, who ran at region. Again, the Hoyas could have come in 2nd if Christian Liddell ran in the meet, but he was injured/sick.

The Hoyas return all seven runners that ran in the NCAA regional meet and then some. The finish for the Hoyas last year:
3. Georgetown 2 Nicholas Wareham, So 31:08 5:01 6 Jack Van Scoter, Jr 31:14 5:02 15 Matthew Bouthillette, Jr 31:45 5:07 19 Jack Salisbury, So 31:49 5:08 55 Rusty Kujdych, Fr 32:40 5:16 95 Spencer Brown, Jr 33:16 5:22 123 Eion Nohilly, So 34:14 5:31
The key, beside having Christian Liddell, is Spencer Brown, who finished a poor 95th last year. His goal this year is to finish in the top 70 at the NCAA finals! His preseason work has given him a lot of strength. Couple that with his sub-4 speed should be encouraging if he stays well. He had some sickness problems last year.

Of course, being an at-large team is always a possibility, but the goal is to finish in the top two at regions.

The women have a way to go to get back to the NCAA XC finals, so baby steps are needed. I think they have the team to be at least top five. Maybe even top four, as Nova has lost seven top runners to transfers. It would be nice if they did well in some of the early season meets to gather some important at-large points, which they didn't do last year.

The women who ran at regions last year:
7. Georgetown 51 16 Paige Hofstad, So 21:37 5:48 47 26 Margie Cullen, Jr 21:49 5:51 46 49 Sami Corman, Fr 22:19 5:59 48 62 Katie Dammer, Fr 22:32 6:02 53 83 Meg Mathison, Jr 22:50 6:07 50 119 Kayla Grahn, Jr 23:23 6:16 54 130 Katherine Modrall, Fr 23:31 6:18
Josette must have used her XC eligibility last year. The Hoyas return five of the seven who ran last year. Paige transfered to UNC, and I thought Kayla graduated, and I don't see her in the picture above. With the transfer students, the freshmen, and those who redshirted last year, this team is much better and deeper than last year.

In the national polls the women are out of the top 41 as they did not receive any votes.
The men are outside the top 43, as they did not receive any votes.
A perfect year to surprise a lot of people.

I don't know if races were scored but the women and JHU would have tied, the Hoyas winning on the 6th place finisher. For the men JHU would have won. The women ran their top runners, while the men didn't and those who ran did the course at a tempo pace as six of the seven runners were all around 16:06. The worse result of the day is that Katherine Lee did not finish.

I just noticed that Rey Rivera is not on the men's roster this year. That is too bad, because I was hoping he could partially replace what Joe White gave us. Rey took off last semester and went to Flagstaff to train in altitude. I don't know what he is doing. I will check and see if he is on the NAU roster.

The guhoya.com recap has JHU winning, but I counted it as a tie. guhoya.com has JHU at 38 points, but I counted 2,4,6,11,16 for JHU, which equals 39, with the Hoya women at 5,7,8,9,10 also 39. www.guhoyas.com/news/2019/8/30/mens-xc-track-georgetown-men-and-womens-cross-country-take-second-place-at-mount-st-mary-s.aspxActually, JHU did win 38-39. The Hoyas had their 8th woman finishing ahead of JHU's 5th women. So for intents of XC scoring our 8th runner is invisible, so the JHU women moves up one in the standings, thus giving JHU 38 points: 2,4,6,11, 15 = 38.
